Toyota President Expresses Regret Over Fatal Crash

Seems floor mats in some recent Toyota model cars are causing accelerators to stick, and brakes to fail. This fault caused an accident in San Diego, which resulted in the death of a family of four. Toyota President Akio Toyoda had this to say:
Quote:
"Four precious lives have been lost," ... "I offer my deepest condolences."

...

"I feel sorry that people who are driving Toyota and Lexus cars believing in their safety are now feeling uncertainties,"

...

"What's important is each and every customer. That is my management philosophy,"

That actually happened to me once, though it wasn't in a Toyota. The mat got caught on the gas, so it wouldn't come up when I released it. I was able to kick the mat clear before I hit anything though. Ever since that day I take the floor mat out in any car I drive, just in case.

I am happy to hear that you are good and well..

Actually, I find it pretty strange as to why an expensive luxurious Lexus could have a defective floor mat that takes lives of a family of four. This is horrible!!

Expensive doesn't always equate to quality. That aside, I don't really see how a floor mat can be "defective" - improper installation or design flaw, more likely.

Not always the most expensive is the best and although I like toyota, I don't defend them. That maybe was not a material quality problem but probably design or improper installation. I have seen similar cases where I live, one of them involving Ford Explorer. At the end Ford executives ended up blaming the tires.

Officials: 3,000 People Trapped Due to Indonesian Quake

Quote:
Officials say at least 3,000 people may still be trapped in rubble from a powerful earthquake that devastated Indonesia's port city of Padang.

The United Nations says the death toll is at least 1,100 from the 7.6-magnitude undersea quake, which hit Wednesday off Indonesia's Sumatra island.

Rescue teams are struggling Saturday to reach victims in and around Padang, a city of 900,000 people where large buildings, including hospitals, mosques and churches, were destroyed by the quake.
Hope the rescue teams will successful get these poor people under the rubble..

3 Dead as Typhoon Parma Hits Philippines

Quote:
Typhoon Parma, known locally as Pepeng, with gusts of about 200 kilometers per hour, made landfall Saturday, tearing roofs off buildings, toppling trees and cutting power lines.
This is awful..

It seems that typhoon occurrences are deadly and inevitable.

Ex-Finance Minister Nakagawa found dead at Tokyo home

Quote:
Former Finance Minister Shoichi Nakagawa, whose political career went downhill after holding a press conference in Rome while appearing to be drunk in February, was found dead at his home in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward on Sunday morning, police said.

Nakagawa, 56, was lying face down on a bed on the second floor of his home without any apparent external wounds, according to the Tokyo police. His wife found him limp after going to check on him as he did not emerge and called for an ambulance at around 8:30 a.m., they said.
Former leader and founder of "HANA no kai" has passed away. May he rest in peace!

Scientists Unearth Earliest Pre-Human Skeleton

Quote:
At 4.4 million years of age, Ardipithecus ramidus, which scientists have nicknamed Ardi, is now the oldest skeleton of a human ancestor since the discovery of Lucy, the 3.2 million-year-old female hominid skeleton discovered in Ethiopia in 1974.

Until now, Lucy was believed to have shared a common ancestor with prehistoric apes and to have evolved from there.

But scientists say their new analysis of the older Ardipithecus skeleton suggests that chimps and humans evolved separately from an even older common relative.

This article was posted 1-2 pages back, I think. Even if you're a creationist, this alone also doesn't negate evolution; all it says is that based on this new fossil, man (or what will become modern man) and apes separated much earlier than what had been believed.

Widow of Hudson midair collision pilot sues Liberty Helicopters and etc
Quote:
PHILADELPHIA - The widow of the small-plane pilot killed in a collision with a helicopter carrying Italian tourists over the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit.
I'm not sure if this will actually go to trial or if the companies will just settle to get rid of the PR. OTOH, according to the news articles back then, witnesses said that the plane clipped the helicopter from behind, I think? Can the helicopter pilot actually see behind his vehicle well enough to dodge in time?

I'm just glad I didn't panic so I was able to figure out that there was something blocking the gas pedal, and that it wasn't wrapped around too badly so I was able to get it out. If I hadn't kept my cool, or if it was harder to get out, tings could have ended badly.

Sonce you mentioned it, it was a Ford that it happened to me in. An escort though, not an explorer. I can't remember if they were the mats that came with the car or aftermarket though.

If the Ford incident you're talking about was involving Firestone, then the problem was with the tires. Poor tire quality was causing uneven wearing and inevitable tearing and shredding of the tires, specifically at high speeds. Firestone made a pretty major recall over this.

As for the Toyota issue, I suspect it's the way their floor mats are installed. Bear with me as I try to explain this, with my utter lack of automotive knowledge. Unlike most floor mats, which simply lay on the floor underneath the pedals, Toyota floor mats (at least in some models of cars) actually wrap about the pedals. Because of this, the pedal supports that go through the floor can rub against the floor mats from time to time. If the mats slip, they can jam against the pedal support and cause the pedals to stick.

I'm aware of what happened with the Explorer, thanks anyway for clarifying the situation. I cited the case only to give another example of defective cars( in this case the problem were the tires). Although you should remember that the behavior of the tires only happened in the Explorer, so the thing was strange. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hiroshima mayor requests that Obama visit city in meeting with Roos

Quote:
Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba met with U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos on Sunday and requested that U.S. President Barack Obama visit the city that suffered an atomic bombing during World War II.

Akiba said he thinks the meeting with Roos was ‘‘a plus’’ toward a future visit to Hiroshima by Obama, who is scheduled to come to Japan next month but has no intention of visiting the western Japan city. Roos was on his first visit to Hiroshima since assuming his current post in August. Roos visited such facilities as Peace Memorial Park, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the A-Bomb Dome after the talks with Akiba, in which the ambassador said he will convey the mayor’s request to Obama when they meet next time.

Nagasaki, the other city devastated by atomic bombs dropped by the United States in August 1945, has asked Obama to visit during his first trip to Japan, but he will not travel to either city due partly to a schedule conflict.
It seems that the only reason why Obama would refrain from visiting Hiroshima is to avoid the controversy of agreeing that the atomic bombings were wrong as that could affect his approval rates in the United States. At the same time, by not visiting Hiroshima to show that he is sincere on the idea of reducing the number of nuclear weapons along with Russia could also give the wrong impression. Whether Obama visits Hiroshima or not, Obama will be in a bad position one way or the other. If he goes, the right-wings will launch attacks on him and his administration. If he doesn't, this just shows that Obama is not very sincere about reducing nukes.

Although I don't see Obama as such but not everybody agrees. After all, Obama is just going to be visiting Hiroshima to pray at the atomic bombing memorial, not like he is going on an apology tour of some sort. Nobody expects the Obama Administration to do something like that yet it appears Obama is reluctant to visit Hiroshima due to issues dealing with right-wings in the United States and also his failing approval rates.

South Korea Refuses to Return 11 North Korean Defectors

Quote:
The South's Unification Ministry said Sunday that it has no intention of returning the people, who defected to the South by sea last week, because they expressed their desire to settle in the South.
This is obviously not an issue of returning people or not as that these 11 North Korean defectors if sent back to Pyongyang will be die in a horrible way and there is no way the government of South Korea can do something like that even if it risks worsening ties with North Korea. Speaking of which, ties are already pretty bad since North Korea refuses to resume six-party talks and continue on with their nuclear threats in the region.

My suspicion is that this particular discovery did not garner much attention because of two reasons:
1.) This particular fossil points itself toward being either a common ancestor of both species, and so falls before the divide between modern apes and humans, or a simple relative of the two species with no actual direct lineage to them.
2.) Due to the deteriorated state of the fossil, very little information is able to be discerned about this particular finding.

Excerpts from the Wikipedia article:
Quote:
Sahelanthropus may represent a common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees; no consensus has been reached yet by the scientific community. The original placement of this species as a human ancestor but not a chimpanzee ancestor would complicate the picture of human phylogeny. In particular, if Toumaï is a direct human ancestor, then its facial features bring the status of Australopithecus into doubt because its thickened brow ridges were reported to be similar to those of some later fossil hominids (notably Homo erectus), whereas this morphology differs from that observed in all australopithecines, most fossil hominids and extant humans.
Quote:
The teeth, brow ridges, and facial structure differ markedly from those found in Homo sapiens. Due to the distortion that the cranium has suffered, a 3D computer reconstruction has not been produced.
Quote:
Another possibility is that Toumaï is related to both humans and chimpanzees, but is the ancestor of neither. Brigitte Senut and Martin Pickford, the discoverers of Orrorin tugenensis, suggested that the features of S. tchadensis are consistent with a female proto-gorilla. Even if this claim is upheld, then the find would lose none of its significance, for at present precious few chimpanzee or gorilla ancestors have been found anywhere in Africa.
Now, on to the news!...

Space Tourism
Quote:
The U.S. firm Space Adventures said on Friday it will be able to send two space tourists into orbit on Soyuz spacecraft from 2012 onwards.

At present, the price of a 10-day trip to the ISS for a tourist is estimated at about $35 million.
So...not really tourism, unless you're stupid rich.

Report Says Iran Has Data to Make a Nuclear Bomb
Quote:
Senior staff members of the United Nations nuclear agency have concluded in a confidential analysis that Iran has acquired “sufficient information to be able to design and produce a workable” atom bomb.

If Iran is designing a warhead, that would represent only part of the complex process of making nuclear arms. Experts say Iran has already mastered the hardest part, enriching the uranium that can be used as nuclear fuel.
Well, I guess Iran had those WMD's after all. =P

Bluehenge Unearthed
Quote:
The find is already challenging conventional wisdom about how Stonehenge was built - and what it was used for.
Bluehenge was put up 5,000 years ago - around the same time as work began on Stonehenge - and appears to have been a miniature version of it.
The two circles stood together for hundreds of years before Bluehenge was dismantled. Researchers believe its stones were used to enlarge Stonehenge during one of a number of redevelopments.
An interesting find that opens the door for more questions about an artifact for which we already have almost no answers.

Goldman Sachs to make US$1B if CIT fails
Quote:
Goldman Sachs stands to receive a payment of $1bn – while US taxpayers would lose $2.3bn – if embattled commercial lender CIT files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, people familiar with the matter said.

The payment stems from the structure of a $3bn rescue finance package that Goldman extended to CIT on June 6 2008, about five months before the Treasury bought $2.3bn in CIT preferred shares to prop it up at the height of the crisis. The potential loss for taxpayers would be the biggest to crystalise so far from the government’s capital injection plan for banks.
Just one word: Wow.

Billions in U.S. aid for battling militants never reached Pakistan Army
Quote:
SLAMABAD, Pakistan – The United States has long suspected that much of the billions of dollars it has sent Pakistan to battle militants has been diverted to the domestic economy and other causes, such as fighting India.

Now the scope and longevity of the misuse is becoming clear: Between 2002 and 2008, while al-Qaida regrouped, only $500 million of the $6.6 billion in American aid actually made it to the Pakistani military, two army generals tell The Associated Press.

And here's the "wow" on this story:

Quote:
The details on misuse of American aid come as Washington again promises Pakistan money. Legislation to triple general aid to Pakistan cleared Congress last week. The legislation also authorizes "such sums as are necessary" for military assistance to Pakistan, upon several conditions. The conditions include certification that Pakistan is cooperating in stopping the proliferation of nuclear weapons, that Pakistan is making a sustained commitment to combating terrorist groups and that Pakistan security forces are not subverting the country's political or judicial processes.

Pakistan has received more money from the fund than any other nation. It is also the least expensive war front. The amount the U.S. spends per soldier per month is just $928, compared with $76,870 in Afghanistan and $85,640 in Iraq.
Yet by 2008, the United States had provided Pakistan with $8.6 billion in military money, and more than $12 billion in all.
So, the cheapest war front has received the most money, and is poised to receive even more, provided they can convince us that they're doing what we ask of them. I'm so confused as to how this plays out as good political strategy. $12B, we can't even prove that they're using it for the reason they're receiving it, and we're still handing it out hand over fist. Perhaps it's time to put a stop-payment on one of their checks. Isn't our national debt high enough ($11T and counting!)?
Quote:
The U.S. is also insisting on more accountability for reimbursing money spent. For example, Pakistan is still waiting for $1.7 billion for which it has billed the United States under a Coalition Support Fund to reimburse allies for money spent on the war on terror.
Okay, I really must be misunderstanding this. So not only are we doling out funds to different countries to fight this war, but we're paying everyone's way now? Seriously, WTF?! Is this just an ignorant young nation telling people that we'll pay them to do what we want, or are these other countries saying "We'll help you fight your war, if you'll pay us for it."? Either way, that's...stupid.

Isn't there a quote out there, somewhere, about the importance of keeping your own house clean? Maybe America should work on that bit for a while...

Okada admits possible 'negative' impact of ending refueling mission

Quote:
Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada admitted during a meeting with British business secretary Peter Mandelson on Monday that ending Japan's refueling mission in the Indian Ocean could have a negative impact on countries involved in U.S.-led antiterrorism operations in and around Afghanistan, Mandelson said.
It seems that a lot of the nations who supported and had sent troops to Afghanistan to fight Talibans and protect Afghans are currently very unhappy with the stance of Japan's new government in regards to ending the refueling mission. However, it is a fact that the reason why the current Hatoyama Administration has an approval rate of over 70% is contributed by standing firm on not extending the refueling mission and seeking equal bilateral ties with the United States. Back when the LDP was the government who strongly supported the refueling mission, its approval rates kept on hovering below 20%. For that matter, I do not think it is a good idea to extend the refueling mission just to appease various nations. Besides, its not like the SDF had ever fought against the Talibans in the first place.

Considering that Obama first asked for re-consideration to extend the refueling mission but was somewhat ignored. Then, lots of leaders of the Afghanistan mission allies continue to seek a re-consideration on the issue of ending the refueling mission but in the end, they were also ignored. Negative impact? It'd be strange if there isn't going to be one.. Nonetheless, it cannot be helped as that it is a fact that the majority do not approve the refueling mission.

Kyoto Univ. cafeteria to start providing Islamic food

Quote:
Kyoto University Co-op said Monday it will start providing food permissible under Islamic law at the university’s cafeteria to meet the needs of the increasing number of Muslim students on campus. The cafeteria will introduce a Halal food corner from Tuesday, avoiding pork and seasonings of pork origin, which Muslims are banned from eating. The new menus include chicken and croquettes made of broad beans, it said.

More than 1,000 Muslims live in the city of Kyoto, many of them said to be Kyoto University students and their families. The rare introduction is aimed at supporting such Muslim students, whose population is expected to rise under the university’s plans to increase the number of foreign students it accepts.
This is a brilliant idea!

N. Korea ready to return to 6-way talks, talks with U.S. key

Quote:
''The hostile relations between the DPRK and the United States should be converted into peaceful ties through the bilateral talks without fail,'' KCNA said.
Quote:
''China is willing to make concerted efforts with the DPRK and other parties concerned to contribute to realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and maintaining peace, stability and development in the Northeast Asian region,'' Wen was quoted as saying.
Quote:
''We, of course, encourage any kind of dialogue that would help us lead to our ultimate goal that's shared by all the partners in the six-party talks, which, of course, is the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,'' Kelly was quoted as saying.
A single visit from China to North Korea and the entire landscape of the issue takes a swift change, quite impressive but will Kim Jong-Il actually keep his words of returning to six-party talks or had only said so because he wanted some sort of benefit from China for the time being? Until North Korea officially returns to six-party talks, this cannot be considered as a job done.
