She is a boobagonist or a protitonist.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

So, is the Atlantic Federation supposed to be genuinely evil, or are they just negatively portrayed because the game take place along the front of the Empire?

There is no good or evil, both sides are simply motivated by their respective political agenda.

This includes Gallia.

Uhm actually depending on how you view it from a political way, there are aggressors and defenders.

As the Empire started the war for ragnite ressources they can be seen as the evil part of the story and the Gallian are the good guys.

The Feds are not mainly involved but as they are allied with the Gallian they belong to good guys although the way as they tried put Gallia into a vasal state they are actually also evil but more subtlety.

They are not allied. If they were, Gallia would be part of the Federation.

At one point, they were discussing a possible alliance much to the annoyance of the princess, but we know how that ended.

Gallia is a neutral country, nothing more than that.

Who's to say that the main reason the Empire decided to invade was because the Federation decided to cut off their supplying of Ragnite to the Empire, and then made Borg charge the Empire through the nose for Gallian Ragnite?

Answer: we don't know what exactly started the war, so labelling one side evil and one side good when the story is told from a historical perspective from a Gallian writer is simplistic. There are shades of gray everywhere in VC.

I think the main reason why the war started is because Gallian soil is rich of Ragnite. From game perspektive Maximilian neededs a living example that he has all rights to call upon his rights for the throne.

But as the Empire started the invasion to a neutral country they can be seen as evil.
And at the end the winner writes of the war will write what is right or wrong.

I don't think invading Gallia would have given Max a better chance at the throne, especially when his brothers were all fighting a more serious enemy, namely the Federation. Gallia was nothing more than a sideshow to the Empire, that is why it was relegated to who many considered to be the least capable son.

Remember, the Empire invaded Gallia while war had already begun with the Federation.

Max's goal was to claim Gallia as his own, presumably one independent from the Empire. What he hoped to achieve afterward is not known, but his goal was to marry the princess.

Would that put him in conflict with the Empire had he succeeded? Probably. Did he have ambitions to take over the Empire eventually? Maybe. But... alas, he did not live to see the day.

(thought from in-game perspective) I thought he was going to conquer Gallia because he thinks that the Princess is a descendant from Valkryia; otherwise, he would've already married Selvaria =P

I would think that his plan was to strike back at the Empire once he attains Valkryian powers and take over his father's throne because of his childhood. Though I'll never get any confirmation unless the anime takes a turn =/

Come to think of it.. is it just me, or did Jun Fukuyama just voiced a similar type of character again?

The exact reason why Maximillian led the Empire to invade Gallia hasn't been told in the anime yet.

He does want to overthrow the Emperor. The means for that lies in Gallia though.
Spoiler for Maximillian's reason:

Terms such as "evil" and "good" are really out of place if you're going to asses the actions of nations. The Empire is the aggressor in this case, but eventually they are acting out of self-interest and not out of a manichean concept of "evil". This is politics, not religion.
The Federation act out of self-interest too. Evidently getting their hands on the ragnite-rich nation of Gallia would be very beneficial.
That's why small neutral countries need the means to defend themselves, because we can't really trust our neighbours.

Still, on the grounds that Gallia doesn't have the means to dominate the Federation or the Empire, it isn't hard to see why they are regarded as the "good guys". At best, they win back what they had before. At worst, they lose everything.

@Neku: You're talking about Lelouch, the resident Chessmaster of Code Geass.

They've never been described as being Immortal, they're just uber strong in battle when armed with a lance and shield.

I think there were some comments on how their body is just as frail as a normal humans is. I don't think Selvaria would of fared as well in combat if she didn't have her lance and shield, which boost her fighting powers
