i have a question about various battle scenes. why do many of the girls have cat ears in most battles?

I think that Eva started it, by forcing some of the girls to cosplay during her combat training (remember Asuna and Setsuna in the maid costumes?) just to amuse herself. At this point in the story I think some of them are wearing them as part of their "disguise", since they are all wanted criminals in the Magic World and there are pleny of "cat people" around to impersonate.

i agree that they dont look at all ugly with them. darn cat ears and the occadional chibi form are a deadly combo. ty, the disguise idea didnt occur to me at all for some of the girls although imo cat ears arent too much to hide their identities.

Not quite to this level, but she was definitely showing those kind of tendencies during the Cinema Town cosplay battle.

Or the joke that since characters generally never change in appearance in most anime and manga, that putting on a pair of sunglasses or wearing a very obvious (to the audience) disguise makes them completely unrecognizable.
