First ep was better than I excepted. Not the fan of genre but Ayahi Takagaki voicing Hamaji is enough reason for me to give it a try

My feelings while watching the OP: "This is so retro, I wonder if they're doing it on purpose?"

My feelings while watching the episode: "We're in 2013, right? Not the '90s, right? (ee, doggie!!)"

I can't really put my finger on why but this show feels like something out of the '90s or early '00s, with better animation...

Anyway, this episode was decent but it also felt pretty clichéd (I think the OP cycles through most OP clichés... does someone have that list?*), and the protagonist being the typical "big-mouthed brat hero" doesn't help. Still, I'll give it a chance for the guy in the uniform (I hope he'll show up soon!) and because the scene when Shino summoned Murasame was pretty cool in an "eek, body horror" way.

*I couldn't find the list but found this. xD This show seems to be specially fond of "turning to look at the camera"...

I didn't think it was spectacular, but i didn't think it was a bad first ep either. Don't know what that clicked with me, but i might follow it

The manga started back in 2005, I think that has something to do with it.

The first episode felt a little too busy for my liking. This would normally not be a problem had they handled the transitions better but they didn't, so I checked out the first two chapters of the manga just to see whose fault it was. So turns out episode 1 is a combination of events from chapter 1 and most of chapter 2 with changes to make them fit together. That explains why the story felt so cramped. Ah well, with 13 episodes only and a need to hook the audience I guess it can't be helped.

On another note I now appreciate the hair colour changes a lot more. Manga Shino looks exactly like the protagonist in Miyuki Abe's other manga and it bugs me because I keep seeing them as the same character in a different setting. Though thanks to Hiromi Kato anime Shino looks more like a younger, purple-haired Shu instead.

It really does feel that way. In particular this felt like DEEN in the early '00s to me (but as you said, with better production). I don't think I've ever really had that feeling with their recent shows but somehow this does.

I saw "Tōhō" and thought that we were getting an official Touhou Project anime. Oh well.

Thanks. That actually clears some things up....

I might hang in for awhile to see where this goes, since it's based on an old novel....and I"m a sucker for those type of stories.

Pretty interesting first episode, like the animation and character style so far...though the first ep felt like it moved quite quickly.

Spoiler:
I think Shino is a boy, but he's also connected to the princess? Somehow? Also, it seems princess was in fact a cross-dressing boy because Kakihara Tetsuya did her narration... But Shino must be one of the dog warriors as well, since his name has the kanji for "dog" in it (Inuzuka Shino).

Btw, I'm not very familiar with the original Hakkenden story, but afaik the setup goes like this:
Spoiler for just to be safe:

Going by this, and assuming the mangaka applied some poetic license in her manga,
Spoiler for speculation:

ETA:
I just looked up the original story and woooh boy. o_____o) (It sounds pretty awesome, though.)
