Question: So if Zero was bitten by a pureblood, does that make him a pureblood? Or are purebloods the children of other purebloods? Also, do the vampires age? The 10-years-ago Kuran looks the same as the present one.

I'm still rather confused with the background of the story...maybe I'm just not good at picking up the little hints or explanations contributing to it. Overall, I kinda agree with Raserei_Hojo-san that this episode feels somewhat like a filler.

no. he turns into a "human turned vampire" class vampire. which is second from the bottom.

purebloods have blood from the original vampire in them, meaning their bloodline hasn't been diluted with human blood at all. there are only a few pureblood families left

Finally got around to seeing episode 3. I agree with what you all have already posted about the animation quality dropping slightly from the first episode and the deviation from the manga. Kaname's artstyle is very characteristic of the mangaka's style, so I'm not too surprised to see that his animation dropped more than Zero because he's probably a bit more difficult to replicate.

I agree that the Zero bite scene wasn't exactly on par with the manga but that whole level E vampire was done much better than in the manga. I actually jumped when that vampire child suddenly reached out and grabbed Yuuki's hand. It does give you a better sense of fear and demonic characteristic of a level E vampire - and it adds a much darker, scarier tone to the anime now too. Overall, the episode was done quite well.

Zero isn't a pureblood. Kaname is. According to what was explained in episode 3, purebloods trace their vampire bloodline back to the very original vampires. To avoid spoiling you anymore, that's all I'm going to say. As to your other questions, if will be revealed soon. But I don't think Yuki will die, she's the heroine of the series. They can't off the main character that quickly. XD

Gah, finally had time to watch Episode 3. I thought the filler part was done pretty well. I didn't think it would have been that good since they probably stuck it in there to just to stretch Zero's bite on Yuki to the end of the episode. And speaking of the bite, it kind of looked like Zero was biting into Yuki's shoulder and not her neck.

Also, for some reason, that creepy vampire kid reminded me of something from LoTR. *shrugs* And was I the only one who laughed when that vampire lady got kicked by Zero? lol

I think it was only me but I that's a kind of 'little fanservice' in the Aidou x Akatsuki scene :3
Oh, and I don't remember if Zero calls Ichiru's name in the manga oô like he did in this episode. Anyway, good episode.

Best episode yet. Definitely not a filler - Ending created suspense, we finally saw more action from vampires that are not exclusive to those pretty dormies, and more info on the vampires was revealed. So IMO this is definitely not a filler. But a few parts I really didn't agree with - some parts seemed a bit out of place at times for me. Great nevertheless.

Not sure if Im misreading what you said, but its stated, people bitten by a Pureblood may be turned into vampires, meaning zero must have been turned into a vampire by the one that attacked his family (which must have been a pureblood) but that just makes zero a vampire, not a pureblood, so he wont turn yuuki into a vampire. Also, in first episode it is stated Kanami is a Pureblood.

Only thing that annoys me is the volume and contrast casted upon the vampires' eyes. The radiance on the eyes looks off-timed to me when the vampire shots are taken on daylight time.

Everything else for this episode worked brilliantly, since the plot finally took off.

Since the moment I saw Zero taking the same pills as the Academy Vampires do in episode one, I immediately deduced he was transitioning to the same type of monster he loathes wholeheartedly, and the ending climax for episode three marvelously confirmed it.

The vampires that attacked Yuki at the ruined neighboorhood were Level E vampires, according to Kaname.

1. Level E vampires must be a stage for which a human, who has been bitten by a pureblood vampire, falls after so much or little struggle into a ravenous and insane monster craving for human blood.
- Kaname must be falling or has already fallen into the Level E category because the vampire woman stop at mere inches from lunging at him, and then she called him nakama (jap. comrade).

2. Kaien Cross refers due to full experience that Kaname is the rare "Pureblood" vampire. A vampire borned from a Pureblood vampire couple.
Pureblood vampires are the only ones who can convert humans into vampires, according to Kaname.

Thus, leaves that the woman and her son must had been bitten by another pureblood aside from Kaname.

Concluding facts:
1. Kaname since a long time ago knew that Zero was bitten by a pureblood and protests to Kaien that the latter is becoming to dangerous to allow a stay at Cross Academy. This is because Kaname is truly worried and concerned about Yuki's safety due that she stays too close to Zero, meaning that Kaname truly has feelings towards her.

2. How he addressed the perpetrator of Zero's family murder, Kaname must know or at least has an idea about the identity of the Pureblood who convert Zero. According to Kaname, the other Pureblood is a female.

3. Since Kaien addresses that the Pureblood bloodline is a rarity among vampires, the other vampires at the Academy must be of mixed ancestry but still naturally-borned vampires.

4. Kaien is a former vampire hunter addressed as such by Kaname. They know of each other in full depth likely from past encounters. It's certain that Kaien proposed to Kaname to found Cross Academy as a means for vampires to adapt and coexist with normal humans in their daily standards.
Kaname must likely consented to that proposal due that he found some reason to live, which translated to his first meeting with Yuki ten years ago.

5. Level E vampires have an ingrained and deep fear of Purebloods. The vampire lad froze in place at the mere sight of Kaname.

6. Level E vampires likely share a hive mentality and are "pack" hunters, unlike Purebloods and other vampires who have a sense of individuality and in essence are "lonely" hunters.

I was totally freaked out at the sight of Zero in full vampire mode licking the blood he drank from Yuki, apologizing to her for showing her the ghastly form in which he has transformed himself into.

Another aspect about what the series is portraying is how Yuki's naive outlook on vampires has been shaken off brutally and challenged.

This episode was very atmospheric. Looks like DEEN was able to take their Higurashi and Fate suspense factors and put them here.

Kid Level E was never in the manga...made the whole thing much creepier.

I gave it an 8/10 because even though the episode had so much information for new VK lovers to absorb, I was a little disappointed at the ending of it. They only showed Zero biting Yuuki on the neck at the very few end seconds of the episode I was like O.O If someone blinked, they could've missed the most important part form the manga. I thought the part of revealing Zero as a "vampire" a little longer, with not so many interruptions of the past being brought out. But other than that, it was pretty good.
