Not in the manga as far as I know, and KyoAni is generally known for following source material. Though they have been know to expand on background characters to interesting extremes (see Haruhi and Kyon's classmates all being detailed out even though most don't have any lines and are only in the background).

anime has more loitering around but that's what you get for animating a 4koma, Azumanga Daioh had the same problem too sometimes.

Tuba would get them some really low tones. Considering I've seen heavy metal (or was that death metal) Basses (not bass guitar...the real big ones like giant violins), so anything goes.
