I loved the entire ep! Op and Ed too. But GOD! Why just 6 eps? Yesterday I thought this was another good serie that was going to keep me entertained for a few months and today I find out it's just 6 eps

Look on the bright side, it'll at least keep you busy for a month and a half

Come on guys, don't worry over it's length. Its content is what counts.

I am very content with the content! (yes, I do suck at puns) Just watched episode one, and I like it!
Rather than frowning at it's short duration of 6 episodes, notice the animation quality - it's constant and definitely a good measure above average. I also like the art of Tarou

Thus far, no show I started to watch in 2006 has let me down - keep it coming ;D

Great first episode though. I was hoping since it was such a short series the animation would be really exceptional, but it seems more average--still, I like the cast and the setup. I hope it doesn't end with Rika and/or Yuichi dying, but the picture in the ED could just be there to give viewers false hope. If the story it's based on is still being serialized, I guess there's also the chance we'll get an open-ended "ending" but I really hope not.

Anyone reminded of Kira from GS or Takumi from Mai-Hime about Yuuichi? His design seems a tad bit familiar to those two.

Good first episode. Nice pace to go for the introductions of some characters, and the preview was half expected...
Spoiler:

Let's see how it turns out.

P.S: Yep...I was definitely reminded of our favorite Flame Haze from Rika. The design of her character looks a little alike as well as the attitude.

Actually, the first person that popped into my head when I saw him was the main character of Spiral, whatever his name was. (Narumi-otouto?) I can also see those other two though.

I picked this anime at random, because I wanted a romance anime to watch, it looks promising even though it's short. Though I haven't read anything about it except for your posts here, I hope for a good experience.

Lol. Looking like Shana can't be bad. But Rika's tsundere has a different quality: not so harsh, and seeming less dangerous. Perhaps because we know she can't kill on a whim, lol. And the way it fades so quickly (ready to return) is captivating. The orange-throwing scene, which comes in the novel's prologue (I've looked at a bit) is deeply charming. I hadn't noticed the fact that she set the first orange up over the door, like the old bucket-of-water trick.

I can't figure out that wedding photo (with the old man there in spirit). It at least gives me hope that a way will be found for them to enjoy some happiness together. Do they look older than 17 in the photo? I can't be sure which ending would be more moving/satisfying. I am in the author's hands.

Can one of the mods add (Hantsuki) to the thread title so that people will know the shortened name for it?

*me continues to pray really hard that the ending is tear-jerking sad~*
Argh, I hope not, I'll carry the flag for a happy ending If I wanted depressing, I'd just watch the news

They could make everyone happy and have Rika wheeled into surgery at the end of episode 6--and then roll the credits, and let the viewer decide what happens. Does anyone know if the novels are still coming out? If neither the novels or manga have ended yet, wonder if the anime will get a conclusive ending or leave it open for another season later...

I think that would be Ayumu, the main character from Spiral...I think. Can't remember for the life of me...

As for the ending...be it a terribly sad one or a happy one, I think either way, the anime would be successful...Storyline-wise, at least.

I totally agree, that was my first thoughts as well. Nice simple romance series, will fill the empty hole left by suzuka

I have a question. The novel was seinen I believe. How is this considered seinen? It looks pretty shoujo to me...?

How it looks to you or anyone else doesn't matter at all.

This is a seinen novel/anime just because the novel is serialized in a magazine for young men.

And the manga thats based on the novel is serialized in a magazine for boys.

I have bad news for you guys. There isn't any Hantsuki 2 this week... because... there just isn't any Hantsuki 2 this week. It's not going to be aired. So, we'll be using this time to work on our Magikano project.

The next Hantsuki release will be quicker. We don't have to do the karaoke any more... well, not unless the production studio decides to be a jerk and change the OP and ED.

All true, but maybe the question is why does a story like this appeal to guys rather than girls. My rough first stab at it: the porn mags, the ridiculous tough nurse (some guys find this attractive, I understand), the girl being more interesting than the guy, the guy being the narrator (in the novel). Maybe guys in Japan are more into some of the story types that girls everywhere are into (e.g., tragic romance with complex characters and deep feelings)? Maybe girls read some guys' magazines (is this possible?) Just as an aside, maybe since it's for guys it is more likely to end happily? Do girls like tragic soap-opera endings more? Another, somewhat contradictory, aside: Iriya no Sora is also a seinen novel.

Like you said, the fact that the story is narrated from the boys perspective makes it more appealing for guys since we are looking at the cute girl, as opposed to looking at the guy from the girls view. (which is the way most of the female orientated love K-dramas work) Girls (in East Asia at least) absolutely love romantic dramas that end up with tear-jerking tragic endings whereas guys like you mention like to have it end happy. I think the reason guys like the ending happy is because in general we don't find watching dying couples crying their love out to each other as being remotely romantic. The thing about the tragic Korean drama ending which I dislike is how sappy they have to make it...it get so cheesy it makes you cringe! I get the impression that Japanese aren't as fond of tragic-endings as Koreans though~ I love my stories with lots and lots of angst though~

...the fact that Rika is a cute, weak and loli-ish girl is the most blatant evidence of who the show is aimed at! The guy looks somewhat cute, but isn't pretty or cool enough to appeal to girls
Well Japan has its fair share of tragic shows. Although not as many as Korean shows.

J-Drama:
Kamisama mou sukoshi dake (God please give me more time) starring Takeshi Kenishiro
Basically a love story of a Idol (Takeshi Kenishiro) and a HIV positive girl.

Summer snow starring Kinki Kids
Romance between a normal bicycle shop owner Shinoda Natsuo (Kinki Kid Dohmoto Tsuyoshi) and a bank clerk Katase Yuki (Hirosue Ryoko), who has heart related illness like Rika.
Spoiler for Summer Snow ending:
