Would be pretty interesting if a couple were to be formed during Black Day...

Robotic vigilante: Homemade 'Bum Bot' patrols in Atlanta

Full story here:

Pics here:

Quote:
ATLANTA - Cars passing O'Terrill's pub screech to a halt at the sight of a 300-pound, waist-high robot marked "SECURITY" rolling through downtown long after dark.

The regulars hardly glance outside. They've seen bar owner Rufus Terrill's invention on patrol before — its bright red lights and even brighter spotlight blazing, infrared video camera filming and water cannon at the ready in the spinning turret on top.

"You're trespassing. That's private property," Terrill scolds an older man through the robot's loudspeaker. The man is sitting at the edge of the driveway to a child care center down the street. "Go on."

The man's hands go up and he shuffles into the shadows. Almost immediately, a group of men behind him scatters too.

The Bum Bot's reputation, it seems, has preceded it.

The electronic vigilante — on the beat since September — has enraged neighborhood activists, who have threatened protests. Street people say it's intimidating. And homeless advocates question the intentions of its inventor, who uses the Bum Bot as a marketing tool and a political prop.

Terrill, a 57-year-old ex-Marine, asserts his motives are pure: He says more police now patrol the area at night, the park across the street feels safer and he's had no break-ins since the cube-shaped robot, which Terrill controls with a wireless remote, has roamed the area. To Henrik Christensen, director of Georgia Tech's Robotics and Intelligent Machines Center, the Bum Bot exploits the kind of anxiety that underlies the Terminator movies.

"We have a Hollywood picture that they're going to run amok, kill people and do bad things. This Bum Bot plays on that stereotype," Christensen says. "For the rest of us who want to use technology to assist people in their daily lives, it's an obstacle."

Just north of downtown Atlanta, Terrill's bar is near luxury apartment complexes, condo towers and Terrill's home. But vagrants gather at a nearby homeless shelter. Break-ins and robberies are common. And used needles litter the grounds of the child care center, where Terrill sits on the board.

"They're out here to get money for drugs, to get money from breaking into cars," he says. "These are bad guys."

Terrill bought the bar four years ago, plowing his profit from selling an apartment complex into the smoky dive. He named it O'Terrill's, gave it an Irish theme and decorated it with knickknacks he and his wife, Linda, had lying around.

At first, he walked around, indoors and out, with an assault rifle on his shoulder to scare away vagrants, but police told him to put away the gun. Then he used a spotlight. But the bar was still being vandalized, and guns were stuck in his face several times.

His wife suggested he patrol a safer way — using a robot.

An environmental engineer by day, Terrill gathered the makings of his vigilante for three months. A three-wheel scooter gives the Bum Bot mobility. A home-alarm loudspeaker attached to a walkie-talkie gives it a voice. Its head is a former home meat-smoker. The red lights are from a 1997 Chevrolet, and it's powered by four car batteries.

Frequent masturbation may help men cut their risk of contracting prostate cancer, Australian researchers have found. It is believed that carcinogens may build up in the prostate if men do not ejaculate regularly, BBC News reported on Wednesday. The researchers surveyed more than 1,000 men who had developed prostate cancer, and 1,250 men who had not. They found that men who had ejaculated the most between the ages of 20 and 50 were the least likely to get cancer. Men who ejaculated more than five times each week were a third less likely to develop prostate cancer.

Brazilian priest ties himself to 1,000 balloons, goes missing.

It's not that funny because the guy is probably dead, but still... what the hell?

Getting a lift with QI
3 May 2008

Quote:
The Straits Times (Singapore) - Lifting weights with your arms is tough, but how about lifting them with your genitals? Wong Kim Hoh talks to practitioners of Iron Crotch Qigong who can hoist 50kg without breaking sweat.

The tie tai ("iron crotch") gong, supposedly developed by a Shaolin monk called Seng Feng during the Tang Dynasty, requires practitioners to tie one end of a strip of silk around the base of their genitals and the other end to a stack of weights. They then lift the weights with their family jewels before swinging them like a pendulum.

Lim Khiam Khoon, 61, claims that doing this not only strengthens a man's genitals, but will also give other parts of the anatomy such as the spine, lungs, liver, gall bladder and bladder a vigorous workout. He had learnt it from his late qigong master.

'Exercising one's sexual organs improves blood circulation, energises the body and develops a person's internal strength as well,' says Mr Lim, who has been teaching qigong for more than three decades and practising tie tai gong for two.

No scientific basis
Western doctors interviewed by The Straits Times say there is no scientific basis to his claims and caution that the practice can cause great damage to the penis.

One doctor, who declined to be named, says: 'The male sexual organ is a mass of muscles and doing this can cause muscle strain and sprain. The strain can also strangulate the blood supply and cause gangrene or tissue death.'

The qigong master, however, says each man is carefully assessed before he begins training and adds that not one of his students has suffered injury. They start with very light weights before graduating to heavier ones.

Mr Lim, who is also a Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist, charges S$3,000 (US$2,205) for the first 100 sessions and $120 (US$88) each month thereafter. Many of his students train every day.

30KG: Mr Mike Ng (above), 38, practising Iron Crotch Qigong with his genitals under the supervision of Mr Lim Khlam Khoon. He is lifting a total weight of 30kg.

Live demonstration
On hand to demonstrate the skill to The Straits Times were three men coached by him: former journalists M.K. Leang, 75, and Hoh Beng San, 71, and pub owner Mike Ng, 38.

The ritual begins with a genital massage by Mr Lim to loosen muscles and warm them up. Mr Leang and Mr Ng then manage 20kg and 30kg weights effortlessly while the very sprightly Mr Hoh confounds as he swings 50kg 25 times with great vigour. The routine ends with Mr Lim hitting various 'vital acupuncture points' on the men's bodies with a bundle of thin iron rods wrapped in a piece of denim cloth. This, he claims, improves blood circulation.

All three look robust and claim that practising the Iron Crotch Qigong has improved their overall health and virility.

'No need for Viagra. I have no problems in that department,' quips Mr Hoh, a grandfather of three.

I think he'd need over 9000 balloons to achieve that

Nah, we can't know for sure. Let's get someone as a sacrifice for the experiment.

What if someone manage to reach the moon with just balloons?

Does this even count as silly/odd, or just plain sick?

Josef Fritzl Raped Daughter in Front of Children
Quote:
More and more terrible details are emerging in the Amstetten, Austria incest case that has shaken the world. According to information obtained by SPIEGEL, Elisabeth Fritzl's father Josef repeatedly raped her in front of the children they had together.
Is this considered OT?

I'm also quite worried about the children... I wonder what they thought when they saw their mother being raped.

EDIT: Actually, I'm just wondering about something. Since she was a missing person, she obviously couldn't go to the hospital. So, who bore the children for her? O_o;;

HOUSTON — Three teenagers were arrested after two of them told police they dug up a secluded grave north of Houston, removed the skull from the coffin and converted it into a marijuana bong.
Police found a grave in the city of Humble that had been disturbed, but were still investigating the rest of the teens' story, Houston police Sgt. John Chomiak said.
Kevin Wade Jones, 17, and Matthew Richard Gonzalez, 17, both of Kingwood, were arrested Wednesday night and were being held on misdemeanor charges of abuse of a corpse, Chomiak said. The juvenile was referred to the Harris County juvenile justice system.
A woman who answered the phone at Gonzalez's home declined comment. A telephone number for Jones could not immediately be found, and it wasn't clear from court records if either had an attorney.
Police were interviewing Jones about the use of a stolen debit card when he told them about the grave theft, which purportedly occurred around March 15, according to court documents. Asked why Jones would volunteer such a story, Chomiak said, "We can only speculate and guess to what goes on in the criminal mind."
Gonzalez confirmed the story to investigators in a follow-up interview. Police were led to a heavily wooded site in Humble where they found a knocked-over headstone and water-filled hole more than 4 feet deep. At the time, the muddy water did not allow police to see if the coffin had been disturbed.

"They dug into this gravesite and that was enough to warrant the abuse of corpse charge," Chomiak said. "There has to be further investigation into the actual gravesite."
Police believe the grave is that of an 11-year-old boy who died in 1921. Preliminary reports indicate it was part of a 19th-century veterans cemetery, Chomiak said. While residents in the area knew of the cemetery's existence, it did not appear to be maintained.
what the hell are they smoking.

Hospital Worker Admits Having Sex With Dead Corpse

Quote:
HACKENSACK, N.J. — A lab technician admits sexually abusing the corpse of a 92-year-old woman at a Teaneck hospital morgue.

Anthony Merino faces up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to desecration of human remains.

But under a plea deal, the 25-year-old could be placed on probation after nearly a year behind bars.

Authorities said a security guard last year saw Merino engaging in sexual activity with the body in the Holy Name Hospital morgue.

Merino has agreed to undergo a psychological evaluation and will be prohibited from working at a hospital morgue.
