Shadow House anime adaptation announced today.

Synopsis

Faceless shadow nobles living in a vast mansion, attended by living dolls who spend much of their time cleaning up the soot endlessly emitted by their mysterious masters.

Follow the story of Emilyko, a young and cheerful living doll, as she learns her duties serving as the attendant for Kate Shadow-sama.

This is an interesting development to me, considering that they also animated The Promised Neverland and I think this should draw a fairly similar audience.
I binged the entire manga in a night back when this first got announced, because I'd never heard of it. It is very good.

First episode was odd. In general it looked like SoL in unortodox setting inspired by Victorian England. But there were a bunch of hints that it is creepier than it seems. I may be mistaken but I actually prefer it to go a darker route.

Well, this is definitely an interesting setting. But there is this atmosphere around this show that points to people dying, just like those good Victorian
detective stories, so I was worried Emilico would get pushed out the window or just get killed. But at least she survived this episode.
Heck, can't really just go "Oh, nice loli!" like I planned to near the beginning of the episode because of the creepy, mysterious mood.

Anyways, cool. Looking forward to this.

A good premiere from the series I was most curious about this season. Emilyko is the weak link so far - she's a walking (and tripping) cliche and offers nothing apart from her lovely character design. But the art is gorgeous and the setting intriguing, and I agree this is probably a much darker story than the premiere lets on.

So... They decided to cram several chapters into the first episode. I'm not pleased with this, but I can understand why it was done. The mystery of the Shadows House that was drawn out over those chapters could easily be made into a huge drag in anime format. (This point only seems to be proven by the two posts above mine. <_<) I also suppose another benefit to this is that we'll get the meatiest parts of the story a little faster. And what was covered in this episode was done fairly well.

I really love the choices for Emilyko and Kate's VAs in particular. Their portrayal of the characters and their chemistry with each other is perfect. I can see that people would find Emilyko very generic/annoying, but I think she becomes more endearing the more she learns. I won't lie, though. Kate's development is much more interesting. I'm also pleased with the visual design for the Shadows. The animators did a good job of actually making the soot look and feel like soot on screen.

My greatest complaint, however, is actually the first two minutes of the episode. It frontloads a LOT of info/hints/implications that the manga reveals at a beautiful pace. Sure, there's intrigue in wondering what the full context of certain shots mean. But I feel this scene blatantly ruins a good amount of mystery for anime-only viewers. I can only assume it was done because they struggled to make the episode meet its runtime requirement, so they threw it in as a tone setter... Unfortunate.

Interesting choice for the OP. Wish they went with something more traditional, but I think what we got fits.

And I adore the ED. The song is great, the visuals were on point. Well done all around!

First few chapters were also a slog to get through in the manga, but it does improve tremendously. Emilyko too grows on you as does all the characters here. There were parts though I felt were directed a bit heavy-handedly, hopefully that’s not something we’ll see all through out.

Ash disease? Are you sure these are not actually creatures of darkness pretending to be human?
If they are human, those anime evil scientists would definitely be interested in them. And if not, youkai hunters would want a word with them.

Anyways, so the other girl is probably jealous that Emilico is being treated a lot better than her. Ahh yes, fun times seem to await us.

I missed chapter two but after they started singing I knew things won't be roses and rainbows.

Now chapter 3 well we can see how mia is treated, I like that group but I doubt mia will last long now, rosmary too.

That Barbie is a real piece of work. It might be due to how she was trained and the influence of her master but still hope she gets hers one day.
