Taiwanese politician under fire for iPhone Facebook pics

Quote:
Senior Taiwanese officials have been under scrutiny for the smartphones they use — specifically whether they support Taiwan’s HTC Corp., which plays a big role the island’s high-tech economy.

Hu Yu-wei, the information minister and government spokesman, stirred up controversy Sunday for posting a picture of an iPhone 5 on his Facebook page.

“Help the economy and bolster consumption,” Hu wrote under the picture showing the Apple handset’s black case with its telltale icon.

He was immediately blasted by the media and on the Internet.

Hehe, people used to get criticized in Finland if they had a non-Nokia phone. Not so much anymore, when it comes to smartphones. Just goes to show people have random bursts of nationalism over petty things

Seanan McGuire explains why you shouldn’t expect every fantasy heroine to be raped

Quote:
Rape in fiction can be a powerful and important thing. It can be used to make important statements, it can be used to drive important stories. I love Robin McKinley's Deerskin as much because of the discomfort it causes me as for the beauty it contains. There are authors I will always trust, or try to trust, and it's important to show uncomfortable things through fiction. I am not saying that no one should write about rape, ever.

But rape in fiction can also be a problematic and belittling thing, used to put cocky heroines in their places. When Janet goes to Caughterha despite being told not to, her punishment is rape by the eponymous Tam Lin. When a superheroine needs a deeper, edgier backstory, there's always some previously third-tier villain with a de-powering ray and an agenda waiting in the wings. I read a lot of horror, a lot of comics, and a lot of urban fantasy, and the one thing these three things have in common is rape. Lots and lots and lots of rape.

And I don't wanna write that.

I do not understand-I will not understand, I refuse to understand-why rape has to be on the table for every story with a female protagonist, or even a strong female supporting cast. Why it's so assumed that I'm being "unrealistic" when I say that none of my female characters are going to be raped. Why this "takes the tension out of the story." There is plenty of tension without me having to write about something that upsets both me and many of my readers, thanks.
Well said. People shouldn't tell authors to have a character raped just because they think it's makes it realistic or betters the story when the the story can still be good without it.

Problems with her reading choices, maybe? I hardly ever read any novel where the heroine gets raped.

Well...

Let's just say it is 2 different genre...

I've hardly ever seen it as well, but I've heard quite a few women comment about rape in the books they read. Maybe it's because it's in books that are focused towards women because its a real fear for women so they can relate easier, where as men are.. detached.. from it since it "can't" happen to them so we get other buttons pressed, so to speak..

Never mind the darker 'fantasies' people, both men and women have about rape.

it is definitely genre specific. i am guessing woman or at least this author is referring mostly to certain types of romance books.

i read mostly scifi/fantasy and while the subject does come up here there it is more a exception then the rule.

now that i think about it is defintely more prevalent in works by Female Authors then Male Authors.

Which generally leads me to lean towards it being more a 'dark fantasy'* thing women have going on, one that isn't really something they can admit to in polite company. Which leads to complaints about it from those that aren't interested in such things or find the topic offensive or degrading.

I've not read it, but from what I've heard of '50 shades of grey' it is pretty much this, or quite borderline with all the BDSM.

* I read a psychological paper a couple years ago from the APA that covered the topic, it was pretty interesting with the stats it mentioned about how many women have fantasies about things like rape and the like. Of course they wouldn't want it to really happen though. The article implied that it tied back to baser parts of human psyche, things like dominant and alpha characteristics and the like.

Crime from Japan: 3 men held for murder, confess to making curry from victim’s remains

http://www.japantoday.com/category/c...ictims-remains

At the very least, it seems like no one ate these "curried remains". The victim's remains were cooked in curry to cover up the smell, is what investigators believe. This story is terrible and disturbing, but if this victim's remains were eaten, it'd only make all of this all the worse.

Wasn't there a furor a while back over the Tomb Raider reboot and the creators' need to add in a "tragic backstory" and a "sexually threatening" scene involving Lara Croft? Oh, right. This.

The first commenter for this article is basically saying, in epic, glorious flames which won many internets, what the sci-fi author is now saying to her wonderfully rapey and presumably male (it's hinted somewhere in the comments) fan.

So I don't think McGuire is complaining about the "female rape fantasy" smutty romance novel, but rather the "rape as character development (for females only)" attitude you sometimes find in the darker and edgier side of general pulp fiction -- fantasy, sci-fi, video games, what have you.

But yeah I don't encounter them much either. Then again, I'm not a fan of grimdark and I tend to drop things, quick and no regrets, if I feel something I'm not gonna like coming up. So maybe I was just that good at self-selecting.

Canadian Police Close in On Thieves Who Stole $30 Million in Maple Syrup

And no, it’s not the plot of some young adult mystery novel. It’s a completely serious crime that Canadian authorities are treating with utmost dedication, after more than $30 million worth of the goopy gold went missing from a Quebec warehouse in late August. That’s a considerable portion of the country’s supply — and seeing as Quebec produces around 75% of the world’s maple syrup, the heist has the potential to bruise Canada’s economic sector.
What the heck is going on up there Canada?
