Father dies sheltering daughter from blizzard

Quote:
Mikio Okada died as he tried to protect his only child, Natsune, against winds of up to 109kph and temperatures that plunged as low as minus 6 degrees Celsius.

Mr Okada was one of at least nine people killed in a spate of snow-related incidents as blizzards hit Hokkaido island.

He was last heard from at 4pm (local time) on Saturday after he collected Natsune from a school where she was being looked after while he was at work.

He called his relatives to say his truck had become stranded in driving snow, which was several metres deep in places, according to newspaper reports.

He told them he and Natsune would walk the remaining kilometre to their destination.

However, the pair were found just 300 metres from the truck early on Sunday morning.

Mr Okada was reportedly found hunched over his daughter, cradling her in his arms and apparently using his body and a warehouse wall to provide shelter.

He had taken his jacket off to give to the child, a broadcaster said.

The young girl was taken to a hospital near their home at Yubetsu on Hokkaido where she was found to have no serious injuries.

Her father was also taken to the hospital where he was officially pronounced dead.

Mr Okada's body was uncovered by rescuers looking for the pair after relatives raised the alarm.

Natsune is now an orphan, with her mother having died two years ago from an unspecified illness, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper.

The paper quoted neighbours as saying Okada had been a doting father who would often delay the start of his working day to enjoy breakfast with his daughter.

His death came as families all over Japan celebrated Girls' Day, a festival in which they gather at home and decorate houses with dolls.

"He reserved a cake for his only daughter and was looking forward to celebrating Dolls' Festival together," a neighbour told the Yomiuri.
Sad for the girl, hopefully she has a relatives that will take her in. As for the father, what a man, may he rest in peace.

BMW driver.
Asshole.

Yep... that's what many of 'em are. How to find the BMW? Simple. Find a smashed up BMW, that would match the damage to the accident. If said car is under a repair shop... then it can be found right there, by tagging car insurance.
No need to find the car, it was left at the scene as the driver and the passenger fled on foot, and they know who it is.

A sad story

Hard to say for sure without knowing the details, but things may have turned out for the better if they had stayed in their vehicle, it's almost always a bad idea to leave your car when you're trapped in a blizzard.

Reality mirrors fiction. No doubt he was a real man.

I was thinking the same thing too. The same thing we always keep saying to people whose car may break down in the middle of a blizzard is for them to stay inside until it's over. At least, there's a always better chance of survival by keeping it warm inside.

Such a tragedy.

Well, this was a pleasant note from the US White House. We'll see if the FCC can follow up with some ironclad rules that protect user rights over tinkering with devices they've purchased and own.

(subject: user rights to unlock electronics they've bought)

The next one should really concentrate on domestic issues insted of giving petrol to Cuba, but it might not happen as the vice-president accused the US to be responsible of Chavez's cancer:

^ The real question is whether after more than a decade the people behind Hugo Chavez will relinquish power. They can try to seize power by force or they can try some ugly fraud if elections are called (as their constituion states, in Venezuela the vice-president does not take the place of a deceased president).

Malaysia launches air strikes against squatter sultan's Filipino army
Malaysia bombs Filipino insurgents in Sabah - but they claim to have escaped unhurt

I swear this is one of the fucking dumbest moves in military strategy. Airstrikes in an open area against a squatter group which is less than the size of a company?

This operation should have been less overt - military cordons complete with APCs and Jeeps, combat patrols on shoot-to-kill, then send in the Rangers to flush them out. This is an INSURGENCY, not an all-out war.

And if they want face? Simple, offer rewards for capture of living insurgents, then trial them in a proper court for crimes against the state.

I wonder how they all managed to escape unhurt. 'course, Malaysia isn't a country known for military prowess, at least that's the impression I get.

America wants to know whose side Australia is on

Quote:
Julia Gillard has always had a quick answer to the idea that rising strategic tensions between the US and China were anything for Australia to worry about. ''We don't have to choose between the US and China,'' she has said.
This was always more a statement of hope than of fact. Certainly, we do not want to make a choice between our biggest trading partner and our major ally. But whether we have to make such a choice depends on them, not us. The sharper their strategic rivalry becomes, the starker the choices we have to make.

Simple. You drop a 200-pound bomb in a evacuated area, and expect casualties?

You don't "bomb" an insurgency into submission. Malaysia does have a substantial military and probably has the strongest standing force in SEA, rivalling that of Indonesia's and Brunei's. It may not have the technological superiority of that of Singapore's, but its proficiency in jungle warfare is probably the best even compared to that of Brunei's, where the British SAS's Jungle Warfare School is located.

This is more likely a bad decision made by lousy commanders, this could easily have been a cakewalk if they sent in the Gerak Khas and the RRR when that fake Sultan started waving his arms, although it might be a foreign affairs nightmare.

This whole Sabah thing just feels weird to me since I've been there once, long time ago.
