I've never understood why some people feel compelled to say stuff online that they never would in real life. You should just be who you really are. Then again, with the whole anonymity thing it'd be easy to say stuff you normally wouldn't, and you wouldn't have to worry about what your friends thought or anything. Sometimes I see stuff that makes me go lol, there's no way you're realy like this.
You think so? I guess you might be right, my friends are almost always shocked by the things I do. lol.

But, yeah I think Online peoples true colors are revealed, especially when topics dealing with race and such.

I used to jest a lot and was generally a lot more brash and outgoing in high school, but now I am just quiet and observant, and mainly shy. Interestingly, my online personality has always been consistent with the sort of guy I am in real life, although online I tone down my shyness and replace it with a matter-of-fact attitude. I can be very playful and light-hearted both online and off, but I usually don't get an opportunity to express that sort of side.

They will more ruder because they have no fear of consequence. They'll tell people their crazier beliefs that normally may never be told in real life. These people are actually more real on the internet than in real life.

B) People are tired of being themselves on the internet. They do not want to be known as the same person as in real life. A 14 year old will act out like they are a 21 year old for example. By expressing themselves as a different person they almost get a sense of a double life. This is very dangerous when it comes to MMORPG addictions and people do something like this.
I think both A and B apply to me.

Likewise, I tend to be more vocal and expressive of my feelings on the Internet, while being very shy in real life. I am very weird both online and in real life, but I tend to actually seem crazier on the Internet due to its lack of severe consequences that are apparent in real life.

In some ways its similar, since I tend to be hated by everyone in both. However, on the Internet there are actually a lot people that like me and I have had online friendships, and in RL the only people that do are in my family or childhood friends (however most of them don't share much in common with me and we don't get along well anymore) while virtually everybody else either hate me or would if they knew me (especially if they're my age).

I will admit, I am completely different in real life, on the computer I feel more free and open, while in real life I'm shy, timid, and I have a hard time expressing myself.

I think even online I have a tendency to be shy and hold back what I want to say about many things. Like in real life, I always feel like what I say and do is being watched by others like hawks, and that anything I say can cause an impression toward others. Oh well.

My personality isn't that much different online versus in real life. However, things like certain types of jokes are confined to either section. The other group just wouldn't "get" the jokes. Plus there are also certain topics I don't talk about in real life, but I talk about pretty much anything online (guess because of the anonymity of it).

I'm a bit nicer online than offline, I simply view it as a witty personality though >_<

I think I am a bit more confident to be myself online but in terms of myself I think it pretty much the same.

I always found it interesting how anonymity seems to bring out the worst in people, when with me it seems to have the opposite effect. In real life, I'm rather shy and withdrawn, yet still friendly and expressive among people I know. Online, especially in online games, I become friendly to everybody. Friends, strangers, everyone. It's had a real positive effect on my Internet experience: treat people with respect and courtesy, and people will respond in kind.

AS is a mature, good-natured community, so please, spread out my words of advice: Remember, there's a live person on a computer on the other side of your interactions. Please, think with empathy and be kind to everyone. Your actions, whether you realize it or not, could make or break someone's day.

Hmm, i think i am relatively similar online and in RL. Although, some characteristics get amplified when i am online. One example is i tend to ignore msgs or people when i am feeling lazy and i think i can get away with it. And it is so much easier to do so online. Otherwise, i treat people the same way as i would in RL.

Amen to that.
Problem is whether a person 'cares' what they do to others, i hear of people trolling on IRC, basically just being annoying (for use of a nicer word) for the sake of it and i wonder 'seriously? what kinda person is on the otherside of that monitor to waste time giving others a hard time?' :\
As someone mentioned earlier, there are less consequences online than offline, as i said you don't have to look someone face to face to be rude, impolite or annoying. I'm seeing many many shy peeps saying that they're more 'open' online, then all i can advise is that you take what you learn and apply to your offline lives to, you obviously have the capability to socialise and express your thoughts (okay via text) - now just practice via voice. ^^
You're probably interacting with peeps outside of your country and culture and seeing mindsets that you couldn't have imagined, so as a person you're changing, just hope any good changes don't stop once you turn off the comp and walk away.

I do things online that I wouldn't offline, but to be honest, I'm nicer online than in real life. But that's mostly because I will talk to pretty much anyone online, in real life, I keep to myself and don't talk to many people at all.

I also think it's because the internet is kind of a "world culture" instead of just American, or just European, or just Asian. So it's better to be nice to whoever you're talking to because your culture might not work in the exact same way (and usually doesn't) as the person you're speaking to. An example would be: using sarcasm to an older japanese gentlemen would make him mad at you instead of giving the joking sense that it does in US culture.

i don't think i change online very much. i am easily talking with people offline too.
But i don't have the occasion to express my notions of any kind of things like in this forum often offline , so my personality looks milder offline.

the truth is i can be a jerk in real life sometimes and if someone pisses me of online i try to ignore it.
in real life i show less of myself then online. i can do much more than a lot of my friends think. but yeah thats how i am. but besides that i am kinda the same. heh~

I don't really act differently online compared to offline.
I suppose there is a slight difference in thought but it's not like I act/do the same everywhere I go be it offline or online.

As far as personality, umm, I'm not a devil and I'm not an angel.
