Is this a direct sequel?
I'm kinda mixed about this.

I loved the first movie, but... it's not really a type of movie fit to be continued.
Meaning, it's essentially a "Christmas Carol" style redemption story, and once the plot was concluded, the protgaonist is no longer much of a "Despicable Me".

That's pretty much how I feel about it all as well, the first film finished on a great note and one that you think probably shouldn't continue but none less would like to see go on anyway cause it was so lovable.

Way I see it going is he's still "Despicable Me" but also the worlds greatest dad, with his girls trying to keep him doing his evils deeds.
However also looks like we got some non local visitors joining the party this time around so that's generally one (at the very least a decent) way of continuing on a story.

Either way I'm def looking forward to this, really did love the first film.

isn't this one more about the minions of Gru and not Gru himself?

No, Despicable Me 2 is a direct sequel. There is a spin-off film though, to be released late 2014, that features the minions as the lead characters. As for DM2, all the main voice actors have returned, and Al Pacino has been added as the yet unnamed villain. Considering that Kristin Wiig is also returning as the head of the orphanage, it is conceivable that the sequel will feature Gru being forced to be good (or hiding his dastardly deeds) in order to keep social services away from his new children.
