When I read this, the first thing that came to my mind was 'Superior tactics? Against Chrono?'

I know you have somewhat of a... low respect for most of the male members of the cast, but during A's Chrono is the biggest tactical mind our heroes have, barring Lindy.

Alright, so Alex is initially strong enough to put up a good fight instead of getting his ass handed to him and he fights Chrono to a draw prior to the final battle.

Though its strange... you say you're going to axe Regius and his doings, yet you also say you're going to prominently feature Zest and Lutecia, even though these two hold very strong connections to Regius and his doings, particularely Zest.

Regius isn't getting completely excluded from the fun, but his "blah blah blah I'm going to make life as difficult as possible for those meddling kids" routine isn't going to even get off the ground. Unless he finds a way to directly steer them into a trap like he did with Zest's group.

Me too, and so I've given him a very deep role. He's even gonna try his hand doing a lot of things that his kind of person would and wouldn't do, which includes matchmaking (would), and giving someone a rehab-job (wouldn't). Also, he's one of the few cast members who'd be able to be in contact with, and still bear with someone like Ashcroft, so it works. They're both friends, superior-junior, and adversaries all at the same time

Wait till the unexpected third party in their little platonic pair comes along and things will get interesting...

Though I would not at all consider A's a very good example of battle tactics, and more like a whole chain reaction of ambushes, plus a lucky case of pitting people whom 'you can read easily against you'...Chrono is just that.

The Time-Space Administration Bureau’s long-time policy of banning non-magical weapons has faced numerous tests throughout the bureau’s existence, only the most recent of which was the Jail Scaglietti incident. While Jail was a brilliant scientist and what many would call a diabolical mastermind, he owes his success to a pair of scientists made infamous for the creation of the Type-00 combat cyborg. One of these scientists, known only as “Dr. Weil”, has apparently disappeared from the pages of history, leaving no trace of himself within the boundaries of bureau-controlled tempspace. His partner on the other hand, one Albert W. Wily, has had a marked impact on the face of science.

Wily was a relative unknown in the scientific scene until his involvement with the Type-00 project was revealed to the public some years after his death. For all intents and purposes, he seems to have appeared out of nowhere along with Weil approximately twenty-five years ago, when bureau agents located and dismantled the Type-00 production facilities. Weil and Wily, however, were nowhere to be found when the raid was completed.

Following this time period, Wily disappears from the records again for a period of about twelve years, most likely laying low in the outer regions beyond bureau-controlled tempspace. Evidence recovered from Jail Scaglietti’s base of operations reveals that the two worked together for several years before Jail was ultimately forced to take his activities underground. Wily’s reasons for leaving are unknown at this time.

Wily next appears on Mid-Childa approximately five years prior to the JS incident, living with noted scientist Thomas Light under an alias, and acting as an assistant to Light’s experiments with biomechanical implants. Shortly after Light’s creation of a completely biomechanical humanoid (referred to as “X” by Light in his journals), Wily murdered Light, kidnapped his two grandchildren, Rock and Roll, stole all of Light’s research, and disappeared once again. The status and whereabouts of X are unknown at this time.

Knowledge of Wily’s whereabouts and activities after this time period are closely linked to the existence of Rock Light and the Type-00A prototype known as Zero.

Zero is the ultimate creation of the rogue scientist Albert W. Wily. Constructed using razor’s edge technology in the field of biomechanics and highly illegal cybernetic technology, Zero is a living weapon in the veins of his predecessors, the Type-00 combat cyborgs.

Zero’s origins can be traced back to one Rock Light, the grandson of Thomas Light, a scientist noted for his work in the field of biomechanics. When Rock was approximately fourteen years of age, Thomas was murdered by Wily, who had been acting as his assistant for several years. Wily kidnapped both Rock and his sister, Roll, stole all of Light’s research and much of his equipment, and retreated to a remote fortress in Mid-Childa’s western Hyal mountain range.

Rock and Roll were placed in cryogenic sleep while Wily went about using Light’s research and his own incredible genius to construct his own biomechanical human, the first Type-00A combat cyborg. The process took nearly a year’s worth of precision work, and several damaged bodies had to be discarded before Wily finally extracted Rock’s linker core and replaced it in the body of his creation. Roll’s linker core was lost along with one of the defunct bodies.

According to Wily’s datalogs, Zero was completed shortly after the beginning of the Jail Scaglietti incident. When word reached Wily that his old partner had created his own versions of his greatest creation, he became overwhelmed with the desire to prove that Zero was the greatest of all cyborgs, and set about programming a virus designed to shut down Jail’s creations. Due to its’ similarities with a similar virus encountered among automatons on Non-Administered world #106, this virus has been dubbed “The Maverick Virus” by Shario Finieno of Section Six.

Wily intended for Zero to spread the virus to any cyborg he might encounter, and programmed this Geas into an AI core he installed in the helmet of Zero’s armor. But upon activating Zero for the first time, the virus activated itself, taking control of Zero’s body and sending him on a rampage through Wily’s lab, killing Wily and severely damaging approximately 50% of Wily’s fortress. Luckily, Wily’s mainframe computer and most of his more critical data was unharmed by Zero’s rampage, which continued unabated out into the mountain ranges, as Zero made a beeline for the nearest settlement; Kranagan city, nearly 300 km away.

Zero showed up on the outskirts of Kranagan about a week after the close of the JS incident, surprising the locals and rousing the local guard, who unfortunately were still badly unprepared for battle following Jail’s attack. Before Zero could inflict more than a few serious injuries, however, the unit he encountered called for backup. What they got was Sub-Commander Signum of Riot Force Six.

However, with the Maverick Virus boosting Zero’s physical attributes and forcing him to draw the maximum amout of power from his linker core, even Signum was hard-pressed to keep up with Zero’s incredible combat prowess. Finally, however, she struck a glancing blow to Zero’s AI core, cracking the gem and temporarily stunning Zero. A second blow shattered the core and released Zero from the virus’s influence. Exhausted by the virus’s draining of his linker core, Zero collapsed, and was taken into custody by Signum.

Zero awoke several hours later in the care of Riot Force Six’s chief mechanic, Shario Finieno. After demonstrating a rational and non-psychotic mindset as well as a distinct lack of hostility, Brigadier General Yagami deemed that Zero would remain on base under observation rather than being confined with Jail’s cyborgs. Eventually Zero was cleared for limited access to other portions of the base, and gradually became accepted as a civilian member of the base’s population, the same treatment given to Vivio.

Zero’s time with RF6 was a completely transformative experience. His blank slate personality developed by leaps and bounds through interaction with the Wolkenritter, the Captains, and the Forwards, particularly Subaru. Within weeks, Zero could pass himself off as just another local mage. However, this time period also exposed him to the less pleasant aspects of working for the TSAB, particularly inter-section politics, which Hayate was forced to wrestle with during RF6’s transition into Section Six.

Eventually, Zero was given the opportunity to sign on with the bureau as a contract mage. Zero declined, having no desire to work for self-serving bureaucrats, even indirectly. Instead he struck out on his own, becoming a freelance mage-for-hire working in Kranagan’s less reputable sectors. He has been quite successful in this venture, and is currently acting as a bodyguard for one Ciel Clearwater.

As mentioned above, Zero’s multifaceted personality stems from his interactions with the members of RF6, who have generally had a positive influence on him. The force in general has taught Zero the power of teamwork and the importance of loyalty to one’s friends and allies. Subaru taught Zero to let his hair down and enjoy his existence, while his few interactions with Vita taught him the power of perseverance.

As a result of the force’s influence, Zero has a strong sense of morality, and can be described as a white knight with something of an attitude problem. He is particularly noted for his loyalty to what few friends he has outside RF6 (even moreso for those within the force). His respect for authorities, on the other hand, is nearly non-existent. While he will gladly follow orders from people he personally respects (namely brigadier general Yagami, and captains Takamachi and Harlaown), that respect must be earned before it will be given. A fancy title like Supreme Commander of the Sixth Interdimensional Fleet will do absolutely nothing to impress him, and authorities who actively throw their weight around and use their power to make life difficult for others will get nothing from Zero but his contempt. This led to Zero cussing out some of Hayate’s detractors during RF6’s transition to Section Six, something Hayate took great amusement from.

In his free time, Zero enjoys training his body and inventing spells to expand on his magical capabilities. He’ll often drop in on training missions with the Forwards just to test out new spells and keep his reflexes sharp. As a freelance mage, Zero picks and chooses his jobs as he wishes, taking only jobs which don’t involve criminal or immoral activity, and occasionally doing work as a bounty hunter when it suits him.

Most of Zero’s power can be attributed to his construction; Wily’s technique of crafting Zero using biomechanical parts allowed him to artificially strengthen Zero’s body to the point where his strength and endurance is indistinguishable from any other cyborg. Despite being labeled as a combat cyborg, however, only about 10% of Zero’s body is actually mechanical; almost all of it is composed of strengthened biological components, making Zero much closer in structure to a homunculus than to a true cyborg.

The mechanical 10% of Zero’s body is composed almost entirely of circuitry and biometal laced throughout his body to reinforce his muscular and skeletal systems. The entire setup is linked to Zero’s linker core, allowing him to divert power from his core to reinforce his body without casting spells. The upper limits of Zero’s strength and endurance are unknown as of this time, but Zero has been known to casually lift and throw Type-3 Gadgets with one hand. Zero rarely uses this prodigious strength in battle, however (because altering his physical attributes screws up his fighting style and the way his body moves in combat), and remains “merely” as strong as a typical cyborg unless the situation calls for heavy lifting or extreme force.

The biometal and circuitry combined make up about 90% of Zero’s non-biological components. The remaining 10% is occupied by a neural uplink in Zero’s head that allows him to connect to the AI core in his helmet, which was replaced by Shario during his time with RF6. This core contains data processing and storage functions approximately on par with the latest storage-type devices, and allows Zero to benefit from a significantly boosted spellcasting speed. It also serves as a standard computer whose contents Zero can access at will, essentially serving as a second brain.

Zero’s magical education can be considered sub-par at best. Prior to his encounter with Signum, Zero knew nothing about magic, and was forced to piece together a rough idea of how to cast spells during his time with RF6. Information and tutorials drawn from RF6’s computer system helped greatly with this, but Zero remains a self-taught mage with many holes in his education. His usage of the Ancient Belka system is equally self-taught, something Zero picked up from sparring with Signum and Vita.

As an unregistered mage not affiliated with the TSAB, Zero does not use any form of device, relying instead on his helmet’s AI core and a small arsenal of equipment he looted from the remnants of Wily’s lab. Most of this can be regarded as Inherent Equipment, but one of Zero’s most prized possessions is a ’56 Autozham “Land Chaser” hoverbike which he looted from the lower levels of Wily’s base.

Sky Waltz
A technique borrowed from Subaru and Mach Caliber, Sky Waltz is Zero’s take on Wing Road. This spell creates a runic platform in the air for Zero to jump off of. Zero uses this spell in combination with Assault Grip to engage airborne enemies, and he has perfected this spell to the point where he can cast it many times in succession without incanting the spell’s name.

Assault Grip
Another spell Zero learned from Subaru, this allows Zero to stick to walls and ceilings. As with Sky Waltz, Zero can cast this spell without incanting its’ name.

Inherent Equipment: Dash Boots
One of the most useful tools in Zero’s arsenal, the dash boots are permanently enspelled with a speed boost spell similar to Flash Move. When synced with Zero’s AI core, Zero can trigger this spell virtually at will, massively magnifying his movement speed for 2-3 seconds per usage, but causing the same drain on his linker core that a similar spell would cause on an ordinary mage. As Zero lacks any kind of defensive spells, these boots have become one of his most valued possessions. He keeps a copy of Wily’s schematics of the dash boots stored safely away in his AI core and on his home M2D, just to be safe.

Knight Armor: Standard Form
Zero’s knight armor consists of his helmet, vest, gloves, boots, and an underlying bodysuit. It affords all the benefits of a standard barrier jacket, and the AI core in the helmet provides the benefits of a high-end storage device. Zero practically lives in this outfit.

Knight Armor: Panzer Form
Zero’s heavy combat form, which reinforces his armor with some additional armor plating and boosts the strength of his armor’s kinetic displacement field at the cost of a slight drop in his overall speed.

Inherent Equipment: Beam Sabers
Zero’s signature weapons. The designs of these weapons are based on zamber-type melee weapons such as Fate Testarossa’s Riot Zamber. Zero uses these weapons more than any other in his arsenal, and is highly skilled with them.

As Wily intended for the beam sabers to be Zero’s primary weapons, he put extra effort into making them as formidable as possible. To this end, Wily spent a considerable amount of time developing a special “Element Chip”, which he installed in both of Zero’s beam sabers. When Zero channels magic into his beam sabers, the chip enables him to alter that magic into one of three elemental effects: fire, ice, or lightning. The chips function similarly to finely-tuned elemental devices such as Durandal, but are considerably weaker than such specialized devices, and can only use the mana charge to enhance themselves; full elemental spellcasting is impossible without an elemental affinity for one of the three elements, which Zero does not have.

Inherent Equipment: Chain Rod
A mid-range whip-type energy weapon with a barbed head that can dig into surfaces, allowing Zero to swing from it if needed. Zero doesn’t use this weapon often, preferring the use of his beam sabers.

Inherent Equipment: Z-Buster
A magic-powered sidearm similar to Teana Lanstar’s anchor gun. As the sole ranged weapon in Zero’s arsenal, it sees frequent usage. Typical rounds have about as much power as one of Teana’s Shoot Barrets, but charged rounds can attain power equivalent to one of Fate Testarossa’s explosive Plasma Lancer rounds.

Shiden Issen
A technique duplicated from Signum, this spell wreathes Zero’s beam sabers in flames, boosting his attack power.

Hurricane Fang
A standard melee attack used in concert with a speed boost from Zero’s dash boots. Approximately equal to Nanoha’s Flash Impact spell, but a good deal more lethal, considering Zero’s typical weapon choice.

Raijingeki
One of Zero’s unique spells, this spell empowers one or both of his beam sabers with a lightning charge. While using this spell, Zero can cause his beam sabers to extend beyond their normal length, much like a low-power version of Fate Testarossa’s Jet Zamber. Zero normally uses this as a piercing attack, sometimes in conjunction with his dash boots.

Please watch ep24 again. he didn't steer them into a trap. He was trying to steer them away from it. The only way Regius' actions can be considered steering Zest's group into a trap is if he actually anticipated Zest's preemptive raid on the facility after telling him off and actually wanted him to do it.

It was a slow day. After the destruction of the Saint's Cradle as well as capturing the main instigator, Jail Scaglietti as well as his combat cyborgs couple of months ago, life at RF6 had become very routine. Some might even say it was boring, with nothing to do except train and doing paperwork. Thankfully, none of this was ever said in earshot of any of the higher ups.

The day seemed to be like any other but for one Lieutenant Colonel Yagami Hayate, it was different. Today, it was her birthday and yet, it seemed like no one remembered it at all. She could understand if most of the personal in base did not know her birthday since she wasn't particularly close to them. But surely the people from Long Arch as well as the younger members from Stars and Lightning, not to mention her friends and knights, should have remembered.

It was the same at the Saint Church. Not even the ones she considers her older siblings seemed to remember it was her birthday today. Even the others from the various different departments in the TSAB like her Oji-chan, Aurion, had not shown any signs of knowing that it was her birthday and this made her a bit sad even if she did not showed it outwardly.

As she brooded a little over this in her office, she was startled when her stomach growled, informing her that it was already a little over dinner time. Wondering where Rein was and why did she not inform her that it was time for dinner, she belated remembered that Rein had stopped by Shari's lab for some routine maintance. Hoping that she wasn't too late to catch a bite at the base's cafeteria, she locked up her office and proceeded at a brisk pace.

Along the way however, she started feeling slightly uneasy since it was quiet. Too quiet. As it was never this quiet even at this hour, she reached down her shirt for Schwertkreuz and tried to call for Nanoha, Fate or Keroko. Tried being the operative word since there was no answer at all. Trying to contact any of the rest resulted in the same response, nothing at all. Calling up her Knight grab and transforming Schwertkreuz to its staff form, she headed, cautiously, to her original destination, the cafeteria.

The cafeteria was very dark she discovered as she opened the doors with the only source of light shining in from the corridor behind her. Taking a step forward, she suddenly found herself bound by several magical binds. Scared out of her wits, she took a deep breathe to let lose a mighty scream when...

"SURPRISE!!!"

... the entire cafeteria was illuminated, revealing all her friends, acquaintances and most of the base personal at which she utter a highly undignified squeak, causing everyone to laugh at her.

"Mou!! You guys scared me!! I thought I was under attack." Hayate complain with a slight pout. "Also, Aurion, do you mind releasing me?"

"Well, we did ambushed you with a surprise party. Happy birthday by the way." answered Aurion with a grin as he released her from the binds. Everyone took this as a signal to get the birthday party well underway. "And how did you know I was the one binding you anyway?"

Timing her response well, she acted as if in thought until he took a drink from his cup and was rewarded with a classic spit take, much to the annoyances for some of the party goers, when she answered him with a wicked grin. "You're the only one who likes to bind nubile, young girls like me, Oji-chan!"

"That was mean." he complained as he recovered from his slight choking fit.

"So was scaring me like that." she countered.

Deciding to stop the teasing before it got any wilder, the trio of Nanoha, Fate and Keroko decided to step in.

"Sorry to interrupt things, but we think Hayate really needs to get something to eat," apologized Fate with a slight smile on her face.

"Ya. I could practically hear her stomach growling," continued Keroko.

Much to her embarrassment, Hayate's stomach did growl, loudly, once Keroko finished her statement. Before Hayate can get any redder, Nanoha started pulling Hayate towards the area where the Forwards are and incidentally where the refreshment table was located.

"I see or rather hear what you mean." replied Aurion with a rather irritating grin. "Better hurry before she starves to death."

"So we'll see you later then" answered Nanoha and as Aurion turn to converse with another party goer, Hayate managed to catch the others' eyes and they finish Nanoha's sentence with a loud and enthusiastic "OJI-CHAN!!" causing Aurion to spit take into Director Tsuzuki's face, who was his current conversation partner.

Laughing at their successful prank, the four moved towards the Forwards where a small plate laden with food was handed over to Hayate by Vivio who took the chance to wish her a happy birthday along with Ginga.

"Thanks Ginga. Thank you Vivio-chan, you're a very good girl."

"Nanoha-mama told me to prepare it and Ginga-san helped me." replied Vivio happily.

"Thank you for helping me look after her Ginga," a grateful Nanoha mentioned.

"It was nothing Nanoha-san. She is very well behaved and she has wonderful manners." Turning to look at Subaru who seemed to be pigging out with Erio at the refreshment table, while Teana and Caro are talking quietly while shaking their heads at those two eating machines, she continues, "Quite unlike my sister over there. I thought I taught her better than this. Sorry for my sister's lack of manners Lt. Colonel Yagami."

"Its okay Ginga, I don't really mind. And just call me Hayate. Its a party not a formal event, relax."

"Okay Hayate-san."

While eating her food, Hayate noticed that some people are missing and wondering where they were, she asked Nanoha if she knew. In response, Nanoha simply gestured towards Chrono, who graciously guided Hayate to a row of seats, that was being setup by the brothers Smith and Wesson, in front of a stage where Acous is currently standing at. A few moments later, she was joined by Carim, Sister Schach, Mai and some other friends. Seeing that most people are seated, Acous called for everyone's attention and made an announcement.

"Thank you everyone for coming to celebrate our little sister, Hayate's birthday with us!" Acous cheerfully announced to the crowd. "Now that most of you had something to eat, we'll be starting the entertainment for this evening. As Nee-san is a little shy, I'll be the MC for tonight's entertainment! Allow me introduce our first act for tonight. They will be performing a classic song, with certain modifications to the lyrics, from Hayate's birth world. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, Signum, Tesla, Vita, Shamal, Zafira and Reinforce Zwei! I give you, the Wolkenritter!"

As their names were announced, each of them appeared on stage in their costumes, causing a lot of wolf whistles and laughter. Sensing an opportunity like never before, Vice quickly took out his camera and start snapping pictures like there was no tomorrow. Standing on stage with differing expressions of embarrassment (or in two cases amusement) on their faces, they started dancing to the beat when the disco music came on.

Stepping up to the forefront first is Tesla in a heavily modified version of an Enforcer's uniform except its white, tight and rather revealing. With a rosy blush adorning her face, she started singing in her clear voice, "Young girl, there's no need to feel down. I said, young girl, pick yourself off the ground. I said, young girl, 'cause you're in a new town, there's no need to be unhappy~!"

Stepping up to the plate next was Vita, wearing just coveralls that just manages to cover her chest, a miniature Graf Eisen tucked into her belt and a white safety hat with the stars squad's emblem on it. With her face almost as red as her hair, she continued with the next verse. "Young girl, there's a place you can go. I said, young girl, when you're short on your dough. You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find, many ways to have a good time~!"

As the next part comes about, the rest joined Vita at the front, singing the chorus in unison. "It's fun to stay at the T-S-A-B~! It's fun to stay at the T-S-A-B~!"

Acting out the letters when they sang it, some of them managed to show quite a bit of of their legs much to the delight of most of the guys, only to have their smiles dashed by the next verse. "They have everything for you girls to enjoy, you can forget about all the guys~!"

"It's fun to stay at the T-S-A-B~! It's fun to stay at the T-S-A-B~! You can get yourself cleaned, you can have a good meal, you can do whatever you feel~!"

While the rest danced backwards, only Signum remained at the front singing the next line, "Young girl, are you listening to me~?" With her current attire consisting of a pair of extremely tight, body hugging black leather pants, equally tight black leather bra, a short, sleeveless, opened black leather jacket, a leather cap in black as well and a dark pair of sunglasses with her hair down and unrestrained, it was certain that no one was listening to her.

"I said, young girl, what do you want to be? I said, young girl, you can make real your dreams. But you got to know this one thing~!"

As the blaze general moved back to join the other knights at the rear, Shamal moved forward with a cheerful step, clearing enjoying herself. Dressed in a more daring version of Sister Schach's usual dress, with a skirt that just barely covers her panties, she locates Hayate and gave her a wink as she sang. "No one does it all by herself."

Then pointing a finger at her, she directed the next few verses at Hayate. "I said, young girl, put your pride on the shelf, and just go there, to the T-S-A-B. I'm sure they can help you today~!"

As the Wolkenritter gather together again for the chorus, they could feel the happiness of their mistress, who was clearly enjoying their act. This made them feel better for keeping up the deception of pretending to forget her birthday ... although they wish Shamal and Rein had chosen less embarrassing costumes for them. Finishing the chorus, Zafira took his turn to sing and his appearance made many laugh loudly.

Dressed in rather baggy clothes in contrast to the rest, he cut a not-so-impressive figure with the pimp cane in his left hand, the stripped pants, opened shirt showing his 'manly' chest, large amounts of gaudy rings and necklaces and quite a lot of glitter. Despite this, he managed to sing rather well. "Young girl, I was once in your shoes. I said, I was down and out with the blues. I felt no one cared if I were alive. I felt the whole world was so tight~!"

As the final singer, Reinforce Zwei (in full sized mode), was welcomed by multiple squeals of "Kawaii!" Looking very much like a smaller, tribal version of her predecessor with the feathers and clothes, she was however undeniably much cuter, especially with the adorable feathered headdress and blue tribal markings on her smiling face. With no hesitation at all, she sang the next line. "That's when, someone came up to me, and said, young girl, take a walk up the street. There's a place there called the T-S-A-B. They can start you back on your way~!"

And with that final verse, they all launched into the chorus enthusiastically, some of them secure in the knowledge that their humiliation is about to end. "It's fun to stay at the T-S-A-B~! It's fun to stay at the T-S-A-B~! They have everything for you girls to enjoy, you can forget about all the guys~!"

"It's fun to stay at the T-S-A-B~! It's fun to stay at the T-S-A-B~! You can get yourself cleaned, you can have a good meal, you can do whatever you feel~!"

"T-S-A-B!!" They finished and settled into their final pose with Vita and Rein at the front, hands spread in front and the other four behind them and their arms in the air.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the Wolkenritter!!" Acous announced and the sound of all the cheers and applause rocked the entire cafeteria. As the noise begin to subside, Acous made another announcement. "Are all of you having fun? If so, just stay where you are for this is not the only act tonight!! There's plenty more to go!"

And so the party continued.

A few hours later, after the party has ended, the cafeteria cleaned and the guests have left, the cloud knights helped carry their mistress's presents back to her room. Bidding her a good night, they left for their quarters, to sleep and prepare the next day. As Hayate lay in her bed, the last thought she had was that this was a wonderful day.

Okay, so the A's timeline is more or less worked out (roughly), now let's hit the A's to Nanoha Incident Timeline.

The first five months following A’s leading up to the A’s Epilogue have already been mostly covered in the manga and the tail end of the anime. During this time, Hayate, Alex, the Wolks, and Nanoha and Fate assume their positions as cadets in their various positions, but they won’t actively begin acting as combat instructors, investigators, enforcers, etc for quite some time (6 years later, according to the StrikerS manga). Alex, wanting to stick with Hayate, joins the Wolkenritter in what the manga calls the “Special Investigations Assistance Department”, which I assume provides backup units for SIO officers in the field.

Also, just for the record, Hayate doesn’t have an ambition to become a commander and operate on the back lines (nice cop-out there, 7Arcs), but a desire to fly in the skies with her beloved friends and family, facing and conquering all challenges together.

Now, since the Nanoha incident takes place a few months after the girls join the TSAB, I’m going to assume one of their early assignments involves good old Jail, since the Type-IV gadgets are involved with the incident and I doubt Jail would use those for anything less than an absolute emergency. With Hayate able to use her spells to much greater effect than 7Arcs allowed her to, Hayate winds up taking a much more active role in the investigation, and eventually she and Alex trace Jail to his base, thinking from their investigation that they’re just after a simple arms dealer, not a mad scientist with an army of mechanized troops at his command. This goes with Vita’s talk in the StrikerS manga of the unexpectedness of the attack (“It was just supposed to be another day with her…”).

In response to Hayate’s and Alex’s presence, Jail quickly evacuates what he can of his base and his most important resources, while scrambling Cinque and Tre to lead the Type-IVs against Alex and Hayate. The two are caught in an ambush and Hayate is critically injured by a barrage of Cinque’s Stinger knives, despite Alex’s best efforts at supporting and protecting her. Thus, the Nanoha Incident becomes the Hayate Incident. Alex pulls out, Jail escapes, and Hayate spends the next month in a coma.

The aftershocks of this incident ripple outwards through the cast like an asteroid dropped into the Pacific Ocean. Alex gains Vita’s obsession with not failing Hayate again after an extended period of angsting about his failure. The Wolks as a whole are similarly affected. Fate still fails her Enforcer exam, though by a slightly smaller margin than she did in canon. Nanoha, however, takes it the worst.

Nanoha passed over taking the mission Hayate had volunteered for since she believed Hayate wouldn’t have any problems with it. The important part, however, comes from the fact that while Hayate was out fighting Jail’s forces, Nanoha was focusing on her ambition to become a combat instructor with her continued intensive training. Around the same time Hayate is injured, Nanoha is ordered to see a physician after she passes out during a training exercise with her mentor. The exam reveals the extent of the strain her body is under, and Nanoha is immediately given a doctor’s order to cease and desist all training exercises to allow her body to recover.

The point of all this is a single guilty thought running through Nanoha’s head; “If I had taken that mission instead of Hayate, she wouldn’t be in this condition now.” This forces her to rethink her priorities, and leads her to give up on her ambition of becoming a combat instructor, and instead finds a place in the hierarchy where she can be of assistance to both Fate and Hayate, most likely as an Intelligence Department Investigator like Acous (“The name’s Takamachi. Nanoha Takamachi.”).

Note that the specific unit Nanoha joins isn't all that important in the long run, the point is keeping the Aces together and letting them operate as the invincible team that they've proven themselves to be. They don't necessarily have to be in the exact same unit acting under the same orders, but their roles have to at least complement each other. For instance, another idea of mine was to have Nanoha join the navy and eventually gain command over her own warship. Fate would be assigned as this ship's resident Enforcer, and Hayate and the Wolks would use Nanoha's ship as a base of operations. The problem with this is now Nanoha is relegated to a command position and is getting somewhat shafted, though not to the same extent that Hayate was.

Another drone exploded in Fate's wake as she dove to avoid the incoming attacks. She gritted her teeth as she did a quick survey of the battle below her. Smoke billowed out from every direction. Once pristine buildings now laid in ruins with large blast holes through them. Those that took the bulk of the initial attack were piles of rubble scattered across the landscape. Bright lights danced around the city's ruins as Bureau mages engaged into combat with the enemy.

More drones exploded only to have more fly in to replace them. She didn't know how long they had been fighting, but it seemed like the enemies were endless. They were already outnumbered from the start even with the Forwards fighting at their full power. Even Hayate and her Knights were pushing their limits to keep the enemy at bay from advancing any further. And Nanoha... Fate took a deep breath. She had disappeared a few days prior to the siege, probably kidnapped by the enemy. They had searched and searched but there was no sign of the Ace of Aces. After so long, they feared the worse. They didn't want to believe it, but it was there at the back of all their minds.

The blond whipped around and nearly dropped her Device. There were so many. Even after they had destroyed them one after another they still had this many?! She brought her Device up and prepared to attack as the drones charged their own weapons.

BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM

Explosions ripped across the line of artificial combatants. The shear size of the explosion drew attention of friendly and enemy mages alike. Hovering the closest to the epicenter Fate had to shield her eyes from the blast. Then, she saw something. Something zipped through the falling debris and slammed into another drone. Something pink.

"Nanoha?!"

Through the smoke and glow of exploding power cores, an all too familiar figure hovered into view. Her long Barrier Jacket rippled in the wind with Device held firmly in hand. Then she spoke.

"You tried to bend my will to your own. You tried to kill me using your underhanded methods. But you failed. No matter who you think you are or what you try to do, you cannot take away my beliefs, my will, nor my trust in my friends! With Raising Heart Excelion by my side I will blast a path to victory! Who the hell do you think I am?! I am Nanoha! Taking on all with maximum power and destruction! I am Nanoha the Befriender!!"

All eyes on the battlefield had turned skyward to the white mage. Even the drones seemed to pause their fighting at the speech. Silence covered the crater-riddled area until it was broken...by Fate's facepalm.

Since A's ends right at the end of MC 065 (The book awakens on Christmas Eve), five months would put the Epilogue sometime in May of MC 066. Exactly when in 067 the incident takes place isn't clear, so I'm taking a little creative license and putting it at the end of winter 067, around February or so.
