It’s morning, and this person sitting on the edge of my bed is grinning mischievously at me.

???: Good morning, Kyon-kun!

This person happens to be my sister, who my mom usually sends to wake me up. Which means—

Kyon: Today’s a school day, right?

Sister: Yup! It’s the first day back! What, did you forget, Kyon-kun? You’re so weird.

…It looks like August is finally over. We’re finally out of the woods.

As a side note, Kyon is my nickname, which is why my little sister has decided to call me that instead of “Onii-chan~” or something cute like that. In fact, now that I think about it, she was the one who perpetuated the stupid name in the first place, wasn’t it?

Despite what some of my less observant classmates would tell you, I do have a real name. It’s—

As I was saying. I’m an ordinary, 16-year-old first year high school student. Nothing strange about me whatsoever.

Well, actually, I guess it would be more accurate to say that I’m an ordinary 610-year-old first year high school student.

I’m not lying. I just spent the last 594 years of my life in a perpetual loop comprised of the last two weeks of August.

Or so I’m told. I don’t remember any of it.

At midnight on the thirty-first of August, time would reset back to the dawn of the 17th, taking all of our memories with it. With one, notable exception.

What she must have gone through…

The reason for all of this is, that a certain person didn’t want the summer to end. There were “too many thing she hadn’t done”, apparently.

Since today is September the First, it would appear that my plan to bring summer to an end by doing my homework has succeeded.

Yes, I know that sounds stupid. It still doesn’t match up to other things I’ve done, like saving the world by making out with a certain person or fighting a giant cave cricket.

Okay, that last part was a lie, I didn’t actually fight the giant cave cricket, I just sort of cowered in the corner while the SOS Brigade’s problem solvers took care of it.

All these strange happenings are because, last spring, I was dragged against my will by a certain person into a club devoted to “finding aliens, time travelers and espers, and hanging out with them!”

In one of its usual fits of irony, the universe decided to fill this club with a) and alien, b) a time traveler, and c) an esper.

…Hilarious.

Oh, and that certain person? Unbenknownst to her, she’s God.

…As a result, over the past few months, we’ve gone through some strange things. We’ve experienced the apocalypse, played baseball. I’ve traveled three years back in time and slept for three more. (On second thoughts, shouldn’t that make me 613 years old?) We’ve fought cave crickets and traveled to remote island locations.

And most recently, we had fun doing random things over the summer. 15, 498 times.

…Anyway, where was I? Right.

My nickname is Kyon. I’m an ordinary, 16-year-old first year high school student.

It’s time for this trip down memory lane to end. I have to go to school and deal with that person again.

Today is a brand new beginning in a brand new term, I guess.

This is the first time in my life I’ve looked forward to going back to school after summer vacation.

I don't think it sounds enough like Kyon though, but I'm relatively satisfied.

Spoiler for September the First, Day Zero, Universe 1: Interlude- Dark People in a Dark Room:

The room is dark. The lights are off.

The only light in the room is the glow of a small CRT television.

The image on the television is that of a sleeping teenage boy, with brown hair.

There are two people in the room. They sit just outside of the light created by the small television.

One of the people speaks to the other.

Shadow A: So, what number is this now? The thirty-seventh?

Shadow B: Yup.

Shadow A: And yet you still don’t feel satisfied at all?

Shadow B: Nope.

Shadow A: Maaaaan… I was kinda hoping… anyway, do we really have to watch him sleep? It’s kind of…

Shadow B: Sure we do. He’s cute when he’s sleeping.

Shadow A: Eh, he’s not really my type. Now, the other one, she’s cute. Why can’t we watch her sleep?!

Shadow B: This TV can’t tune into the other side. Besides, in a few days, it won’t matter any more anyway.

Shadow A: You don’t know that. Isn’t half the point of this to figure out if anything different would happen?

Shadow B: …

Shadow A: So far, nothing really different’s happened at all though, you’re right. ‘Course, some things have changed, shifted, etcetera, but that’s only to be expected.

Shadow B: …

Shadow A: Which brings me to my suggestion. Why not interfere? Viral Manipulation can go a long way, even if it is… unstable.

Shadow B: …Sorry, were you saying something? I was watching him breathe. It’s adorable.

Shadow A: …I was just saying that we should introduce ourselves into the equation this time around.

Shadow B: Oh, don’t worry, now that I know how everything works, I was planning on doing that anyway.

Shadow A: Sweet. Now, uh, could we please turn on the lights? I can barely find the door.

Shadow B: No! We mustn’t! The Television Room must remain mysterious, Number Two!


For some reason, both of them burst into laughter. Happy, raucous laughter, that, at the same time, seems frighteningly cold.

And so, over the past few months, we've done some weird, weird things. We've experienced the apocalypse. We've played baseball. I've travelled three years back in time, and slept for three more (Hang on, doesn't that make me 613?). We've fought giant cave crickets in other dimensions. We've solved murder mysteries on remote tropical islands.

And most recently, we've had great fun, doing random things over the summer. Correction: over the last fifteen-thousand, four-hundred and ninety-eight summers. In a row.

(They were the same summer, in case you didn't get that. You did? Right. Just testing.)

This room is dark, cold, and bathed in shadow. This is because the lights are off.

The shadows are cast by the fluorescent glow of a small CRT television, old and outdated though it is.

The television screen flickers gently, alternating between static and the image of a sleeping, brown-haired teenage boy.

Two people sit here, just outside the unnatural light of the television.

One of them speaks.


Shadow A: So, what number are we up to now? The thirty-seventh?

Shadow B: Yup.

Shadow A: But you're still not satisfied.

Shadow B: Nope.

Hmmm. I'm beginning to wonder that if, given sufficient direction, I could write a few of these scenes myself. It would certainly speed up production time.

Unfortunately, the idea which first germinated after that concert at the cultural festival failed to bend in the winds of common sense, which was why Haruki gathered us together again in the soundproof music room.

It was Itsuko who first noticed the main point. "Why are these instruments lying around here? A guitar, a bass, a drum set, and a keyboard... where did you get them?"

"I borrowed them from the light music club," Haruki said without a shred of hesitation. "I had Mitsuru-kun carry them over during break."

No wonder poor Asahina-senpai looked winded. He was slumped on top of one of the big boxy speakers, but he still tried his best to give me a reassuring smile.

"As of today," Haruki proclaimed, "in preparation of next year's cultural festival, we of the SOS Brigade will begin strict band training! Any objections?"

Of course, there were none. Itsuko was still standing there with her irritating smile, and Asahina-senpai had a confused expression on his face. Nagato's face was blank as usual. Maybe he fell asleep standing up with his eyes open.

As for myself, I'm just an innocent bystander for now, although I'll definitely get dragged into this mess very soon.

"Let's decide the parts!" Haruki continued. "During the cultural festival, I sang, and Yuuki played guitar. Yuuki, you okay with that?"

"I do not mind."

"Then, for the bass and drums..." Haruki stared at me. "Kyon, Koizumi, have you played either of them before?"

I can safely say that I have never had any illusions about my musical abilities. The last instrument I touched was my recorder in elementary school, and my parents had given up on my learning the piano a long time before that.

"It is embarrassing for me to say so," Itsuko said, "but I do not know how to play any of these instruments."

"Useless!" Haruki scolded us. Don't be so quick to judge others, you. "What about you, Mitsuru-kun? Can you play the keyboard? Have you ever taken piano lessons?"

"Um, I'm sorry," Asahina-senpai apologized, "I'm afraid I don't have a clue..."

"Then does anyone have a preference?" Haruki asked. "Mitsuru-kun on the drums, maybe?"

"I've never played such a primitive instrument before," Asahina-senpai mumbled.

"Eh? Primitive what?"

"Oh, no, it's nothing!" Asahina-senpai quickly said. "But, so many drums in one place, with big ones and small ones... I don't know how one person can hit all of them. And, um, this is a bass? These strings look really scary, it's like they can cut me and I'll get infected from it..."

"Argh!" Haruki shouted in frustration. "Just forget it! It's pointless to assume that Mitsuru-kun would be able to play the bass or the drums. So, Kyon's on bass, and Koizumi's on drums!"

Don't assign the biggest instrument to the smallest person in the club.

"Mitsuru-kun, you're the main performer!" Haruki continued. "Clap your hands or something! Give us a great show!" He snapped his fingers. "I know, we'll get some castanets or something, and you can use them to keep the beat!"

"Um, castanets are..."

"Just dance around and go 'un-tan, un-tan, un-tan'! It's easy!"

... I'm sorry, Asahina-senpai, but even I would think that it really suits you.

Spoiler for Samurai Kyonko discussion type stuff, ignore if you want.:

Anyway, I’ve mostly just been passing ideas around in my head since this first came up, and this is what I’ve come up with so far.

Other characters' opinions on Samurai Kyonko.
Haruki: Finds her interesting. Possibly sees something of a kindred spirit in her seemingly cold attitude towards others. Amazing similarity to [insert false name Samurai Kyonko uses] is another possible reason behind his interest.
Mitsuuru: Finds her almost as intimidating as Haruki, if not more. Wouldn't like being left alone with her. Think the general reaction Yuuki would get from him.
Alternate possibility for Mitsuuru: Sees her as a protector of sorts. Only, one that's actually effective against Haruki. Even so, he's still a little nervous around her.
Yuuki: ... I honestly don't know with this one...
Itsuko: Still as flirty, but a bit more subtle to avoid being hit. Real opinion is still up in the air, so she could secretly hate her for all I know.
Ryou: Has quite a bit of respect for her, might even find her to be rather cute for a human. Would still sacrifice her life to complete his task if needed, however.
Kunikida: Doesn't exist, who cares? (Sorry ) Friend from middle school, so used to her quirks.
Taniguchi: Finds her weird at first. Gets jealous when she finds out about her being "close" to Ryou. Starts wondering what the hell is going on when Haruki starts talking to her. Immediately labels her "loose" after seeing her with Yuuki. (Ironic, I know... that's what makes it funny )
And even though I don't think I'd go far enough for his introduction...
Tsuruya: Finds her a curiousity. Considering his seemingly high social status, he may or may not jokingly suggest becoming her lord on occasion.

Samurai Kyonko's opinions on other characters.
Haruki: Finds him annoying at first. Slowly opens up to him over the course of the first novel and realizes he isn't that bad a person. Refuses to admit any attraction she may have to him. (Yes, I’m aware this is basically Haruhi’s attitude towards Kyon. If someone else has a better idea, let me know.)
Mitsuuru: Finds him pathetic. Agrees with Haruki that he needs to man up a bit, and might even help in the process. (Cue utter humiliation as Mitsuuru is told he isn’t a man by a girl in a lower grade. )
Alternate possibility for Mitsuuru: Sees Haruki's treatment of him as an injustice, and acts the part of the protective older sister, only effectively. Still a bit annoyed that he needs saving from someone younger than him on a regular basis. (Note that these two possibilities correspond to the two from before)
Yuuki: Mostly indifferent. Possibly a bit irritated after being saved by him. Any relationship between the two would be a long, drawn out process as a result.
Itsuko: Irritated by her flirting. Tries to ignore her one-sided philosophical debates whenever possible.
Ryou: Has a great deal of respect and admiration for him, possibly even a legitimate attraction. Until he tries to kill her, anyway, at which point she views him only as an opponent.
Kunikida: Closest thing she has to an old friend in the class. Willing to put up with Taniguchi as long as she's around.
Taniguchi: Finds her annoying. Then more annoying. Could possibly want to cause bodily harm to her by the end of the first novel.
Tsuruya: Has the utmost respect for him... when he's not conspiring with Haruki.

... Yes, I essentially just paired her with pre-assassination attempt Ryou. To be fair, regular Kyonko fangirled over him, I just made it somewhat mutual.

Possible takes on selected scenes:
Haruki and Kyonko strike a friendship: Scratch that idea. Haruki acts like an ass to people, and Kyonko finally puts him in his place after seeing Ryou's constant attempts at friendship fail time and time again. Haruki's interest in her starts, as he notices a similarity to a girl he met three years prior...
Most conversations: Unlike the original, Haruki is generally the one to initiate things, but he still usually ends the conversation once it goes south. (This sort of has to be done or else the story wouldn't go anywhere.)
"Have you found any interesting clubs?": Rather than Kyonko asking if Haruki has found anything interesting, she asks why he quit the kendo club. Haruki says it was boring, just like all the other clubs the school has. Kyonko ends the conversation there, possibly insulting him in the process.
"Make a club!": Haruki still shouts that, but Kyonko refuses to leave the kendo club. Haruki tries dragging her into it, but she still shoots him down. Finally, to get him off her case, she proposes that he find three highly unusual people to join first, thinking that he’d never manage that. A few weeks later, Kyonko is forced to join, as Haruki has "recruited" a silent bookworm, a cute maid, and a "mysterious transfer student." She refuses to believe there’s anything unusual about any of them, until she realizes that the bookworm barely moves or responds, the maid is really a guy and the transfer student is trying to flirt with her. (Yes, I’m aware that this puts Kyonko as the last member.)
"Make a club!" (Alternate): Same as above, except Kyonko only agrees to join for two weeks unless Haruki can fill the roster. She’ll probably try to argue that Yuuki is only in the room because he’s part of the literature club, to no avail.
"I am an alien": This would basically the same as the original, only Yuuki would be more upfront about getting Kyonko to talk with him if she were the last member, as I'd prefer keeping these in order to preserve the reference to Haruki's introduction speech.
"I suppose you would call me an esper": Kyonko drags Itsuko out, rather than merely confronting her. After the fact, she could accuse her of conspiring with Haruki and the others to mess with her head.
"Surprised?": Instead of just having a simple conversation about seemingly unrelated topics, Ryou challenges her to another match, as no one else in the kendo club gave him as much of a challenge. Sometime during this, Ryou suggests a break so they can talk, which leads to...
"I'm going to kill you": ... Ryou suggesting they make their match a bit more interesting... by turning it into a fight to the death. With this slight warning, the fake weapons the two were using suddenly become very real, very sharp swords. Cue real fight scene.
"I should've done this from the beginning": Ryou realizes the fight isn't going anywhere, and that someone will be coming to stop him soon. He apologizes for the dishonorable tactic he's about to use, then freezes Kyonko in place. This may be followed by him lamenting that he really didn't want it to come to this, as he really did like her(provided the mutual attraction is actually kept). Then he takes one final look before bringing his sword down into...
"You wish to interfere?": ... Yuuki's hand/fingers. Scene can play out in one of two ways:

• Kyonko insists on fighting, with Yuuki only assisting to balance out Ryou's reality alteration abilities.
• Kyonko tries to get involved, only for Yuuki to push her behind him. Basically what happened with the original.

Either way, Ryou ends up defeated, and the one that fought him ends up worn out and being supported by the other, just as...
"Wawawa...": ... Taniguchi comes in and sees the two. Original applies, aside from the glasses part. If Yuuki fought, Kyonko makes a remark that he doesn't look good with glasses(which is different from saying he looks good without them. Technically.). If Kyonko fought, then [insert excuse to have her comment that he looks better without glasses]. Either way, Yuuki ends up not wearing them from that point on.
Ryou's disappearance: Haruki insists that Kyonko help discover what "really happened" to Ryou, citing that the two of them shared a bond of sorts and she deserves to know what happened as his excuse for dragging her along. Only possible difference is that when they bump into Yuuki, Kyonko could bluntly state that she said he looked dumb with the glasses if we go that route.
"Insignificant speck": Same basic speech, only with Haruki asking if something similar is what caused Kyonko to act the way she does before telling her to forget about it.

Haven’t really thought of anything beyond that point, storywise... anything I didn't mention I either haven't thought of yet or can't think of how it'd be different.

Other stuff

I suppose that if anyone can come up with a decent personality for the canonical kendo club member, she could be included somewhere as well. After all, it would make sense to include her.

No, I'm not sure what the point in doing this is. I'm just very bored.

"Let's decide the parts!" Haruki continued. "During the cultural festival, I sang, and Yuuki played guitar. Yuuki, you okay with that?"

"I do not mind."

"Then, for the bass and drums..." Haruki stared at me. "Kyon, Koizumi, have you played either of them before?"

I can safely say that I have never had any illusions about my musical abilities. The last instrument I touched was my recorder in elementary school, and my parents had given up on my learning the piano a long time before that.

"It is embarrassing for me to say so," Itsuko said, "but I do not know how to play any of these instruments."

"Useless!" Haruki scolded us. Don't be so quick to judge others, you. "What about you, Mitsuru-kun? Can you play the keyboard? Have you ever taken piano lessons?"

"Um, I'm sorry," Asahina-senpai apologized, "I'm afraid I don't have a clue..."

"Then does anyone have a preference?" Haruki asked. "Mitsuru-kun on the drums, maybe?"

"I've never played such a primitive instrument before," Asahina-senpai mumbled.

"Eh? Primitive what?"

"Oh, no, it's nothing!" Asahina-senpai quickly said. "But, so many drums in one place, with big ones and small ones... I don't know how one person can hit all of them. And, um, this is a bass? These strings look really scary, it's like they can cut me and I'll get infected from it..."

"Argh!" Haruki shouted in frustration. "Just forget it! It's pointless to assume that Mitsuru-kun would be able to play the bass or the drums. So, Kyon's on bass, and Koizumi's on drums!"

Don't assign the biggest instrument to the smallest person in the club.

"Mitsuru-kun, you're the main performer!" Haruki continued. "Clap your hands or something! Give us a great show!" He snapped his fingers. "I know, we'll get some castanets or something, and you can use them to keep the beat!"

"Um, castanets are..."

"Just dance around and go 'un-tan, un-tan, un-tan'! It's easy!"

... I'm sorry, Asahina-senpai, but even I would think that it really suits you.

Nice. I especially like the bit of cultural snobbery by Asahina, which is promptly punished by karma in the form of Haruki. But isn't Mitsuuru even smaller than Kyonko ...? Still, Kyonko on bass sounds like fun.

Anyway, I’ve mostly just been passing ideas around in my head since this first came up, and this is what I’ve come up with so far.

Yay, awesomeness! I've been hoping for some creative chatter ever since I put up the alternative possibilities for Kyonko, and here it is!

Samurai Kyonko and Yuuki could just accept each other's presence: they'd both be highly organized, self-sufficient characters. They're capable of working together to their mutual benefit, or they can go their own way. No harm, no foul.
A nasty little twist for Taniguchi ... If Taniguchi ever acted a little too flirty with some guy who wasn't prepared to take 'no' for an answer, and Kyonko ended up saving her by kicking said guy's butt ... Would Taniguchi start to idolize her?

Re: Haruki: If Haruki used to be in the kendo club but stopped coming, perhaps Kyonko could demand he spar with her so their skills don't get rusty, now that they're both in the SOS-dan. They could work off some of that sexual frustration by matching wills and skills, which could also bring them closer together as they learn to respect each other's abilities.

"Surprised?": Instead of just having a simple conversation about seemingly unrelated topics, Ryou challenges her to another match, as no one else in the kendo club gave him as much of a challenge. Sometime during this, Ryou suggests a break so they can talk, which leads to...
"I'm going to kill you": ... Ryou suggesting they make their match a bit more interesting... by turning it into a fight to the death. With this slight warning, the fake weapons the two were using suddenly become very real, very sharp swords. Cue real fight scene.

He apologizes for the dishonorable tactic he's about to use, then freezes Kyonko in place. "You wish to interfere?": ... Yuuki's hand/fingers. Scene can play out in one of two ways:

• Kyonko insists on fighting, with Yuuki only assisting to balance out Ryou's reality alteration abilities.
• Kyonko tries to get involved, only for Yuuki to push her behind him. Basically what happened with the original.

Either way, Ryou ends up defeated, and the one that fought him ends up worn out and being supported by the other, just as...
"Wawawa...": ... Taniguchi comes in and sees the two. Original applies, aside from the glasses part. If Yuuki fought, Kyonko makes a remark that he doesn't look good with glasses(which is different from saying he looks good without them. Technically.). If Kyonko fought, then [insert excuse to have her comment that he looks better without glasses]. Either way, Yuuki ends up not wearing them from that point on.
Ryou's disappearance: Haruki insists that Kyonko help discover what "really happened" to Ryou, citing that the two of them shared a bond of sorts and she deserves to know what happened as his excuse for dragging her along. Only possible difference is that when they bump into Yuuki, Kyonko could bluntly state that she said he looked dumb with the glasses if we go that route.
"Insignificant speck": Same basic speech, only with Haruki asking if something similar is what caused Kyonko to act the way she does before telling her to forget about it.

Awesome stuff ... If you ever decide to write this out, I want to see it. ^^ I really do.

As for a personality for the canonical kendo club member ... How about someone who is reasonably skilled in kendo, like Kyonko, but more in touch with modern culture? She respects Kyonko's focus, but is a little worried about the fact that she focuses on swordplay and the ancient codes of conduct so absolutely. There could be a few scenes of them sparring and talking, with the canonical kendo club member suggesting they go do something afterwards "for fun", with Kyonko politely refusing, citing "other responsibilities". The other girl suggests Kyonko needs to find some activities that allow her to be a part of modern society.
When Kyonko is, regardless how, enlisted into the SOS-dan, the canonical kendo club member could drop by from time to time to watch what happens (or she and Kyonko could talk about it during lunch), and she'd then say to Kyonko that she's happy she finally found something fun and whimsical to do. Cue the "Kyonko's stunned"-look.

School's out. Since the school's cafeteria isn't open yet, Her Highness Haruhi has wandered off to the restaurant outside school grounds to satsify her hunger. Everybody's shot off in their different directions, with their different things to do, except Koizumi here.


Itsuki: Well, she is a genius. No doubt she was a child prodigy, so a holiday assignment like this wouldn't have been anything like a burden to her. Such a remarkable personality wouldn't even have bothered thinking of having to share the work with her friends - I mean, from her point of view, she wouldn't even have considered the fact that others might not be able to do the assignment with ease.


I shook my head, sighing. Even theoretically, Haruhi was fundamentally selfish. No, not the right word - she didn't take into consideration the feelings of others. A subtle difference.

Unfolding the collapsible chair, I sat by the windowpane. I had originally planned to head straight home, but I'd decided to see if Nagato was in the clubroom.

Koizumi had joined me on the way here, but Nagato was decidedly absent. These last 594 years must have been tiring ones, even for an alien-human interface like Nagato.

Outside, the forlorn cries of the higurashi echo through the sky. Summer had finally ended; I was sure of that. And yet-


Kyon: It's - it's like a dream! We've repeated these last two weeks of August - how many times? Nearly fifteen-thousand something...

Itsuki: ...I wouldn't call what we've experienced something as trivial as a 'dream'.


He smiles at me, genuinely friendly, yet somehow odd, and starts to shuffle a deck of cards that he produces out of nowhere. Like a magician, or more accurately, some kind of con-artist.


Itsuki: But what else are we to call it? There should be no common memory between the 'us' that have existed within those last fifteen-thousand, four-hundred and ninety-seven fortnights. They don't exist on the same timeline. Only the 'us' that have broken the cycle and advanced to September the 1st should remember anything, and even then...


Koizumi pauses momentarily, the ace of spades between his slender fingers.


Itsuki: Logically speaking, they - sorry, we - should only remember the memories that we experienced directly.

Kyon: Logic goes completely out the window with Haruhi around.


After all, I was definitely getting severe deja vu by that last iteration of the holidays. Perhaps it was the last, desperate gifts of the thousands of 'Me' that came before, trapped in an endless summer with no visible escape; the thoughts of a thousand versions of myself, longing for an end to an endless summer.

Well, I guess it's thanks to the efforts of the thousands trapped that this 'me' - that is to say, me - can get back on track with the rest of his life. I mean, my life.

(Sometimes, I think the worst part of time travel is keeping track of all the pronouns.)

And if I didn't think that way, well, then all those summer holidays would have been absolutely wasted. Not to mention all those 'me's' who were trapped in that seemingly endless loop...

When I asked Nagato about variations, I didn't let her finish. I wonder how strange some of those 'Me's' got. Especially the ones who knew, in the end, that everything they did was for nothing, and the entire world would just reset back to the way it was.

I sure hope none of them went insane.


Itsuki: Would you like to play poker?


The deck between his hands blurs slightly as Koizumi begins to deal cards, like some kind of amateur magician. It can't hurt to keep him entertained. And it'll distract me from this slightly disturbing line of thinking.


Kyon: Alright, but only if there's no money involved. My wallet always ends up moth-infested after we play for cash.

Itsuki: If that is your wish, so it shall be. We'll play for chips.


I only ever win big when winning doesn't matter. I sigh and pick up my cards.

...A royal flush? That's a first.

I swore in the back of my mind that if I were ever to repeat this day, I'd be betting cash for sure.

Any problems or foreshadowing you want to introduce, I'll add them in.

The Yuuki thing works. The twist for Taniguchi sounds like it'd be fun, but I'd have to think of a way to either stretch it out into its own story or work it into something else before I could do anything with it

This is the part I put the most thought into, as I really wanted to visualize how the scene would play out with Kyonko actually fighting back. And honestly, that's the reason I'm so interested in this idea in the first place

So Matsu thinks Kyonko acts too rigid, and probably needs to loosen up a bit. I can work with that...

I kinda like the idea of expanding her friend base outside of just Taniguchi+Kunikida and the Brigade. This could work nicely.

When Kyonko is, regardless how, enlisted into the SOS-dan, the canonical kendo club member could drop by from time to time to watch what happens (or she and Kyonko could talk about it during lunch), and she'd then say to Kyonko that she's happy she finally found something fun and whimsical to do. Given the usual interpretation of the rest of original-Matsushiro's brief description in that seating chart(the part about having fun by inquiring into the relationship of Goto and Toyohara), I think it'd be hilarious if she happened to visit during one of Itsuko's flirting attempts.

The individual routes... well, I really don't want to write the romantic fluff in the Alien or Time Traveler routes, and Time Traveler requires someone a little crazier than I am anyway.

... Yes, I essentially just paired her with pre-assassination attempt Ryou. To be fair, regular Kyonko fangirled over him, I just made it somewhat mutual.

Possible takes on selected scenes:
Haruki and Kyonko strike a friendship: Scratch that idea. Haruki acts like an ass to people, and Kyonko finally puts him in his place after seeing Ryou's constant attempts at friendship fail time and time again. Haruki's interest in her starts, as he notices a similarity to a girl he met three years prior...
Most conversations: Unlike the original, Haruki is generally the one to initiate things, but he still usually ends the conversation once it goes south. (This sort of has to be done or else the story wouldn't go anywhere.)
"Have you found any interesting clubs?": Rather than Kyonko asking if Haruki has found anything interesting, she asks why he quit the kendo club. Haruki says it was boring, just like all the other clubs the school has. Kyonko ends the conversation there, possibly insulting him in the process.
"Make a club!": Haruki still shouts that, but Kyonko refuses to leave the kendo club. Haruki tries dragging her into it, but she still shoots him down. Finally, to get him off her case, she proposes that he find three highly unusual people to join first, thinking that he’d never manage that. A few weeks later, Kyonko is forced to join, as Haruki has "recruited" a silent bookworm, a cute maid, and a "mysterious transfer student." She refuses to believe there’s anything unusual about any of them, until she realizes that the bookworm barely moves or responds, the maid is really a guy and the transfer student is trying to flirt with her. (Yes, I’m aware that this puts Kyonko as the last member.)
"Make a club!" (Alternate): Same as above, except Kyonko only agrees to join for two weeks unless Haruki can fill the roster. She’ll probably try to argue that Yuuki is only in the room because he’s part of the literature club, to no avail.
"I am an alien": This would basically the same as the original, only Yuuki would be more upfront about getting Kyonko to talk with him if she were the last member, as I'd prefer keeping these in order to preserve the reference to Haruki's introduction speech.
"I suppose you would call me an esper": Kyonko drags Itsuko out, rather than merely confronting her. After the fact, she could accuse her of conspiring with Haruki and the others to mess with her head.
"Surprised?": Instead of just having a simple conversation about seemingly unrelated topics, Ryou challenges her to another match, as no one else in the kendo club gave him as much of a challenge. Sometime during this, Ryou suggests a break so they can talk, which leads to...
"I'm going to kill you": ... Ryou suggesting they make their match a bit more interesting... by turning it into a fight to the death. With this slight warning, the fake weapons the two were using suddenly become very real, very sharp swords. Cue real fight scene.
"I should've done this from the beginning": Ryou realizes the fight isn't going anywhere, and that someone will be coming to stop him soon. He apologizes for the dishonorable tactic he's about to use, then freezes Kyonko in place. This may be followed by him lamenting that he really didn't want it to come to this, as he really did like her(provided the mutual attraction is actually kept). Then he takes one final look before bringing his sword down into...
"You wish to interfere?": ... Yuuki's hand/fingers. Scene can play out in one of two ways:

• Kyonko insists on fighting, with Yuuki only assisting to balance out Ryou's reality alteration abilities.
• Kyonko tries to get involved, only for Yuuki to push her behind him. Basically what happened with the original.

Either way, Ryou ends up defeated, and the one that fought him ends up worn out and being supported by the other, just as...
"Wawawa...": ... Taniguchi comes in and sees the two. Original applies, aside from the glasses part. If Yuuki fought, Kyonko makes a remark that he doesn't look good with glasses(which is different from saying he looks good without them. Technically.). If Kyonko fought, then [insert excuse to have her comment that he looks better without glasses]. Either way, Yuuki ends up not wearing them from that point on.
Ryou's disappearance: Haruki insists that Kyonko help discover what "really happened" to Ryou, citing that the two of them shared a bond of sorts and she deserves to know what happened as his excuse for dragging her along. Only possible difference is that when they bump into Yuuki, Kyonko could bluntly state that she said he looked dumb with the glasses if we go that route.
"Insignificant speck": Same basic speech, only with Haruki asking if something similar is what caused Kyonko to act the way she does before telling her to forget about it.

Haven’t really thought of anything beyond that point, storywise... anything I didn't mention I either haven't thought of yet or can't think of how it'd be different.

Other stuff

I suppose that if anyone can come up with a decent personality for the canonical kendo club member, she could be included somewhere as well. After all, it would make sense to include her.

No, I'm not sure what the point in doing this is. I'm just very bored.
