A screenshot or more would help, yes.

As well as additional information such as which operating system you're running, etc.

BTW - if you're on Windows, that is - have you already tried the System Restore to see if you could roll back to a healthier state?

It seems that a piece of malware have messed up some vital registry entries...

System Restore is not recommended since it could restore the malware back... but give it a try first. If not, run Hijackthis and post the log to check if there any malware running without any knowledge. In most cases, you need to back up your files and reinstall the OS if the OS is damaged beyond repair or difficult to repair.

Prime opportunity to upgrade to windows 7. But I agree you should run Hijackthis along with maybe adaware or spybot.

I would make precautions for this, not having thumbnails show like normal smells like a broken windows
If you have 2 hard discs move the important data to the one where you don't install/have installed windows, a reinstall of windows should do the job I think
I don't think there's a need to get rid of everything, start moving your data and post us a hijack this log so we can check if you're still under infection threat

Forgot the possibility that some JPEG thumbs may not show up if the file could be corrupt... Windows XP seems to have a tendency to break easily since the OS defaults to administrator account, unless you set a limited account.

Hijackthis can be obtained from Trend Micro's website:
http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

Run the program and then paste the log generated by that program.

Don't see anything that may be abnormal, but I might be wrong...

Have you tried accessing Windows Update by navigating to windowsupdate.microsoft.com in Internet Explorer? It supposed to load in IE, not in a folder.

hmm now that you say it..
OP could you make clear to us if it is just a couple images that are doing this or all?

But even if corrupt the filename should still show up nevertheless

edit:
several more questions, do you use internet explorer?
edit2:
did some looking for you =)

The files open fine right?
No corruption?

Try this...
Go to my computer right click on the C: drive or any other drive that has the images.
Go to Properties>tools>Error checking>Check now> Check both boxes and run it.

It'll make you reboot if its the C drive.
Restart the computer and it'll start scanning the drive.
