GuP had sort of a similar presentation when the audience is immediately thrown in the fray, and then showing Miho being completely helpless in her new school and even forced to join tank related activities. You don't know Miho's backstory at all in the first episode, and we spent 20 minutes into watching Miho being dragged left and right about taking Tankery course, and solved as she bounds with Saori and Hana.
So really, Miho starts exactly as your usual meek girl who is thrown in a situation she didn't expect and is shown growing AFTER things settle down for her.

It is absolutely nothing outstanding and pretty similar to how Fubuki was meek at the start, then admires Akagi, get completely overwhelmed in combat before deciding to do her best.

Actually, Miho had the advantage in that we are shown what her character's supposed to be in the first episode during the opening's battle sequence, where we see Miho acting as the team's confident tank commander, thus giving us the expectation of what she's actually capable of. We may also have a battle sequence in this episode of Kancolle ,but most of the awesome stuff is done by the veteran kanmusu, leaving Fubuki as the meek... erh, ship out of water.

That's all there is to it though. We don't really learn much about her, except that there is an "ending point" that is visible. I don't see how it defines her aspirations etc (hell, there is no hints "how" Miho became like this). It sets some expectations, but aside, I really think Miho's presentation had nothing outstanding right in GuP ep1 (which isn't bad at all, of course).

That's why I said Fubuki's situation is hardly any different.
We don't see how Fubuki will turn out, but she is shown with an aspiration: to be Akagi's escort. So if we consider that possible, same expectations are there: "how" is she going to rank up and directly serve Akagi? The pilot episode simply puts the point accross that the series will be centred on Fubuki's growth, similarly how Miho "learns" Tankery and handle her aversion for it.

Ep 1 is such a fan service for Kancolle players....

I means i didn't realise it and thought the set-up to be quite random at first. But they actually were sending out Combined Fleet with boss support out for this battle. 4 Carriers+ 2 destroyers for main fleet. Then 3 Light Cruisers and 3 Destroyers for second fleet. The boss support got it right with 2 battleship, and 2 destroyers, but understandably no light carriers were used as it may steal Akagi+Kaga show.

The battle also ended up much one-sided this time as the Kantai Fleet had full air superiority.

This however means... well.... we know how Fubuki and the torpedo squad gonna steal the show later.

So you mean there is no plot for this anime?

Well, that's why Atago here in the first place

But joking aside, can't say about future episode, but Ep 1 definitely was aiming with gaming fanbase in mind. Could be their tactic to keep the hype within the fanbase first before expand to general audiences. We will see.

No one from the general audiences can expect that the most badass characters in the whole naval base were not those in command (Mutsu+Nagato) nor those that were sent out.

It is the two that were chilling and flirting on each other in Mamiya cafe.

That's the point though. With Miho, we actually have a concrete vision of what she'll become and her actual potential due to them showing that future ahead of time (what the hell is with this sentence construction ). On the other hand, we only get a vague "I'll do my best" from Fubuki, and all she's shown so far is that she's an inexperienced special DD with aspirations. Thus, the latter gives less up-front confidence than the former on how they'll handle the character.

And here we are with what will turn out to be the most hyped series of 2015.

I have exactly zero experience with the franchise even though I've been trying to set up the game to get into the servers for months now (as I understood it, there's a set number of people who can get into the game, and that foreign IPs have a high chance of getting banned), so what the anime will turn out to be will define kancolle for me as a whole.

I already see GUP comparisons, and we can only hope it also turns out to be as great, if not greater, than GUP

Foreign IPs don't have a high chance of getting banned. It's the use of VPN that entails a chance of getting banned if by chance multiple people are playing the game using the same VPN line.

^ These are just edited screencaps, nothing much.

And they pretty much changed the battle flow so it "actually" looks like a fight, otherwise it would be really clunky to have only 1-2 shelling and then nightfall for the rest of the battle.
It would be quite terrible if they animated the battles just like how it is in the game. IRL naval battles were quite "boring" to begin with, but replicating the game would be plain bad.

Yes they are historically correct. Kongo had red dye marker while Hiei had none. So the splashes were white and red.

Very impressed by all the markings etc, all of the ID bands on the planes corresponds correctly to the right carrier air group.

Even the close ups on the munitions show that they are thoroughly researched. The Type 1 AP shell close up showed that it was correctly painted as AP as per IJN regulations, and marked as a red dye round.

The Type 99 800kg dropped at the end was also colored as AP bombs with the grey/ white scheme.

Even the type 91 torpedo dropped by another B5N had the correct wooden frame (type 97 stabilizer frames 九七式小型框板) attached to the tail end.

I haven't played the game, and I'm not hyped for this series after watching ep 1. I like the setting and it looks nice etc. But for me a lot depends on how they'll develop the characters. Fubuki is pretty bland up till now, Hibiki's quote about a Phoenix made no sense at all, and by the end of the ep I was already pretty bored with the girl who had nothing else to say than ' it not being night-time'. I'll give it some more eps to see if it turns into something more than fanservice for the gamers.

No, this is a direct reference to Hibiki.
The original ship was nicknamed like that because it survived the war with "timely" repairs, which made her skips expeditions that were the demise of other ships.

That's why Hibiki's quote is a weird, even for gamers, because she isn't even taking damage or making a comeback there.
