I hope it doesn't become a dissappointment like .Hack/Key Of the Twilight. The artworks seems attractive enough, though i have no idea about the story or characters. Well... we'll wait and see then, eh?

You should be okay, I would figure. They're starting a new "universe" with new characters and whatnot. I'm sure anything that has "historical" meaning will get enough explaination to get you through it.

Since I've never played any of the games, seen any of the manga, or read any of the books, I'm not well-versed on a lot of characters and "mythology" at all. But I haven't found that an impediment to enjoying the story that I do get.

BTW, the HDTV version is very, very nice.

I hope a sub group latches on to that...

I'm a .hack// fan, and well. I hated the first episode. Why? The storyline didn't seem anything special, even though they do hint some Tri-Edge and stuff on the OP, which may lead us to something nice in the future. The Animation is alright I suppose, does it's job decently. But that OST, is KILLING ME.

I mean, someone should promote a raid to Bandai and stuff. Who the hell would get ALI PROJECT composing the OST for an anime? Like, they're not bad, but all of their songs sound the same. The Mai-HiME PS2 Game Opening and Main Theme Asura Hime, is almost a copy of the Rozen Maiden Traumend OP. And so on. Not to mention, those horrible synths they usually use didn't fit the the anime at all.

Other than that, I demand Kajiura once again, and I'm not going to keep on watching these series, at least not until it comes out as a Batch or so.

I'm a huge Kajiura fan, but I can understand why they didn't pick her. She's got so many ongoing projects and only-just-finished projects right now that anything she produced for Roots would probably be mostly substandard. Saying that, they probably could've got better than Ali Project... I like their OP material but the Roots OST so far is just... meh. It feels like they're deliberately trying to be Kajiura and falling quite a bit short.

Probably. I'd still heavily recommend digging in though, especially if you want to play GU later. The original 4 games should be going for pretty cheap now, and SIGN isn't that hard to get hold of either. GU seems to be making quite a lot of allusions to earlier material and with Roots coming before it, that might pick up on some of the stuff too. You could probably enjoy it, but it'd make it a whole lot more enjoyable to pick up the games and SIGN.

Which reminds me, I still need to buy Outbreak and Quarantine >.>

Shouldn't this be back in fansubs since the subs are now being released?

..the entire .hack series is depressing. as a gamer it makes me sad the the only games birthed from this are games about the story line.... when will the game "The World" actually appear.. not sure if that names taken..but..watching this anime ..makes me want to play this game.. as its played in the anime..obviously the VR is a bit unlikely..but ya kno.

i should have been more specific. im depressed that there is no world-wide game:P come on how awesome would that be? honestly though. too much WoW. must find something better..

All big things start small.

Unlike the .Hack universe, which has The World as the ONLY MMORPG on the planet, there is actually existing competitors in our world.

It would take time to finalise the gameplan, as well as locate means to compete with other, already established MMORPGs.

ah yes, so true. as someone who has played quite a good number of diffrent mmorpgs, i believe that if The World were to be developed in a way to mirror itself from the .hack series, it would deff. be great compeition for such games as WoW, EQ2, etc. not to mention the huge support from current .hack fans.. and alot of anime lovers are gamers as well. i have huge obsessive ideals for the perfect mmorpg so i apologize for my unlikely dream for one.

I got it over night and have begun to watch. Play by play wall of text below.

Spoiler:

It begins with Haseo logging in, apparently for the first time. He seems to have been PK'd more or less instantly, though is helped by an older looking d00d with tinted glasses. The elder player, who introduces himself as Ovan, warns him that the game isn't easy on newbies. He tells him that there will be unpleasant times, but there is something special in the game that only Haseo possesses. He logs off shortly after that... much to Haseo's dismay. Cut to Tabby and the girl with pink hair and a wing-like cape. They seem to have just gotten to the end of a dungeon, and pink yields the treasure to Tabby. pink is being called by her guild and announces that she must depart, while Tabby makes her promise they will meet again sometime. pink meets with her guild master, who is revealed to be Ovan. Guess he didn't log after all. Ovan relates how he met Haseo, saying he had been hoping to meet him. pink claims Ovan knew how to contact him all along. Both act as though they had been expecting Haseo to turn up in The World eventually. pink says that Tabby will probably join the guild soon, and asks if Ovan wants to meet her. Ovan says he would like to, soon. Next we see what appears to be a rival guild meeting, to which one member was late. The leader claims that Ovan "has begun to move". The leader is also interested in Haseo, who he describes as "a black multi-weapon". Cutting back to Haseo, a few female pc's walk by talking about a rare staff weapon. Some male pc's hear about this and one comments that its careless to talk about such things in the open, and they proceed to follow. Haseo is approached by a floating elderly cat character who comments Haseo was left behind by Ovan. Haseo asks if the cat knows Ovan, after which the cat flickers out of existence. The cat flickers back into existence, claiming his cat unplugged a cord irl. The cat pc gives his member adress to Haseo and asks to be invited to his party so they can talk privately. The cat says that ovan is an eccentric person who created his guild in order to discover certian oddities in The World. The cat wanted to know more about Ovan, but when he sees Haseo knows nothing more, he leaves the party. He introduces himself as Phyll, and says not to call him Mr/san (in other words, he requests not to be called by the common honorific). He tells Haseo to call on him if he's travelling alone in the game. Haseo is concerned that they may have been followed. Sakisaka, a pc with a plant on his head, walks into a room which seems to belong to pink, knocking her puchiguso into an empty barrel. They have a little conversation about Ovan and the guild. Cut to Haseo fighting in a dungeon, he barely survives the fight but gains lvl 3 when he defeats the mob. He runs into one of the rival guild members who proceeds to block his escape and interrogate him about Ovan. She encourages Haseo to answer truthfully since she has a short temper. He balks at how everyone he's met so far wants to know more about his mysterious rescuer. He relates his story, after which his captor proceeds to ask when an why he began playing. He says that a friend told him The World had been fun, in the past tense, to which his captor assumes his friend had played a previous version of The World. She proceeds to ask who PK'd him, and the manner in which he was PK'd. Haseo doesn't know, but claims that it seemed like PKing was their hobby. She approaches with a dagger brought to bear, her intention seems clear. Haseo is clearly terrified as his captor is now at point blank and toying with him. She asks if he's going to soil himself, saying its ok to run away. She then raises the dagger to strike him, but sheaths it at the last minute. She says she doesnt understand why Ovan wanted to contact Haseo, that he isnt even worth PKing. Cut back to the girlie pc's from earlier, it seems that it had been their intention to lure the male pc's to their eventual doom. They mention having to give some of the treasure they found on the unfortunate guys to the PK guild. Haseo overhears this, but as he is right by a chaos gate, he is able to escape before the girl pc's have a chance to do anything about him. Haseo reflects on what Ovan told him, wondering what this special "disposition" is that he supposedly has, and when he will see Ovan again. Some PC's aproach from the rear. Its the girls from earlier, one bearing a staff, the other an axe. Haseo would seem to be cornered. The characters are revealed to actually have the voices of men. The wavemaster strikes first, after which Haseo draws his twin blades to parry the Heavy Axe. The two tell him he has no right to play solo as they proceed to hand his butt to him. Haseo kicks it into overdrive, but can't land even one blow on the opposition. Haseo seems as though he is about to meet his end at the blunt end of a staff when pink approaches. She tells the "girls" to go to the battle arena if they wish to fight other players. The 2 switch back to "sweet, innocent, little girlie voices" to say that they had no intention of PKing Haseo. The back off, as pink approaches Haseo. Haseo tells her that this game has no point. She says "we do not say that". Haseo has a look of incredulity on his face. She says "welcome to the world" (youkoso za warudo e). Still looking somewhat baffled, Haseo claims to not understand what she is saying.

I like the OP, its a lot more upbeat than the one for SIGN. Granted, SIGN's OP set the tone for Tsukasa's situation, and I hope this OP will reflect the main characters as well. While the show had its dark moments, it did seem much more upbeat than SIGN. I think the show can work well either way. I didn't quite catch the exact wording with which the cat pc described the purpose of Ovan's guild, but it seems like they are much more aware of the history of the Twilight events than most players. We see dark Kite in the OP and a few other nasties in the ED, so i hope that there will be some dangers darker than the PK guild, TaN. The whole "girlie men" scenario was a little creepy, it'll be interesting to see how that plays out. Everything is wild speculation at this point, but i wonder if any of the new characters are new avatars of people we met before... Ovan in particular. I don't think the dark kite is actually kite the original, but i wouldn't be surprised if Ovan was the old kite, now a mentor for the new generation of dot.hackers through the Twilight Brigade. I wonder just how far the player corruption goes in so far as the TaN guild is concerned.. I used some MMORPG terms in my summary since I do play Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia. By no means would you need to be an MMO fan to get into this, and it doesn't even seem like knowledge of the original game is neccessary... yet. Though if they call on the 8 phases plot, knowledge of the games wouldn't hurt. I'm most curious how the AI's will fit into this, as the story of Morgana and Aura drove the plot of the "classic" .hack saga.
