Trio Crashes Car Through Checkpoint At Shangri-La Dialogue Singapore

S'porean man shot dead by police, 2 others detained in incident near Shangri-La Hotel

Quote:
SINGAPORE - A 34-year-old Singaporean man was shot dead by police and two others were arrested in an incident near the Shangri-La Hotel where a high-level security summit was taking part.

The incident happened at 4.36 am on Sunday, said the police. The two men arrested, also Singaporeans, are 26 and 31 years old respectively.

The three men in a Singapore-registered red Subaru Impreza were stopped at a police vehicular checkpoint set up along Ardmore Park.

When the police asked to inspect the car boot, the 34-year-old driver suddenly accelerated the vehicle towards Anderson Road. Despite warnings to stop, the driver continued to crash through police barricades, endangering the lives of the officers, the police said.

"Police opened fire at the vehicle to stop further danger. The vehicle subsequently stopped at the junction of Orange Grove Road and Anderson Road," said the police statement.

A bag containing white powdery substances believed to contain controlled drugs was recovered in the car.

Substances believed to be controlled drugs and an item believed to be a drug-taking utensil were found on the men arrested.

The three men were wanted by the authorities for various offences, said the police. The 31-year-old passenger was injured during the incident and was taken to the hospital conscious.

Police and officers from SAF’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Explosives Defence Group have searched the car. No explosives, arms or weapons were found in the vehicle.

No weapons were found on the men. Preliminary investigations indicate that this is an isolated incident, said the police.

Security measures, including vehicle and person check points, have been put in place in the vicinity of the Shangri-La Hotel because of the Shangri-La Dialogue. The three-day security summit, which closes later on Sunday, was attended by defence chiefs from 26 nations, security analysts, academics and media from around the world.

Orange Grove Road, Anderson Road and Ardmore Park were temporarily closed following the incident, but all three roads were reopened to traffic by 11.10am.

At about 9am on Sunday, the entrance to Anderson Road from Stevens Road was cordoned off. Residents who wanted to return to their apartments in the area had to be escorted by police officers. The entrance to Anderson Road was reopened at about 11am.

Police armoured vehicles and Special Operations Command vehicles were seen leaving the scene at about 9.27am.

Most of all, you have to be disciplined and you have to save, even if you hate our current financial system. Because if you don't save, then you're guaranteed to end up with nothing.

Heard about this one. I saw PTU officers on the news, though I don't know if they're the ones who initiated it when the hostile car refused to stop.

One shot, most likely from a sniper overlooking the road and not from the guys manning the checkpoint

Edit, the report said 2 shots, maybe second shot was to the engine block...

"... a drug-taking utensil"

a spoon?
a rolled-up piece of currency?
a mirror?
the list goes on and on

I presume the reporters carefully avoided any mention of cocaine and its methods of ingestion given the drug laws in Singapore.

In 2009, it was reported that 90% of the US currency in circulation contained traces of cocaine. In Tokyo and Beijing the comparable figure was about 20%. Not all of those bills were used to snort the cocaine, of course. Some of it rubs off on other bills in ATMs, sorting machinery, and the like.

So are we now to assume this incident had no political motivations?

Most likely. Though there has been some online bitching about the shooting (including a moron who asked the car to be "boxed in"), the blue boys did the right thing.

When the guy at the checkpoint asks you to stop, you stop. When he asks you to step out, you step out. When he asks you to open the car boot, open the f***ing boot. It doesn't matter if you are a delivery guy or someone driving a million dollar gold plated lambo, security check is security check.

Yes. That is protocol - look at the grass bush between the leaves and you can see the 1st shot. We follow Western SOP.

If it was Russian it would have been 200 API rounds from a MG.

We probably won't know. It is still "under further investigation", most likely to be buried in the books since the local media is controlled by the government.

Still, it is a known fact that any entourage of a politcal VIP visiting SEA can help themselves to drugs in the backstreets. It is harder in Singapore, but these 3 probably know about the penchant of the certain members of the foreign delegation having a drug habit, provided a "delivery drug" service and got busted.

It's heroin, not cocaine:
http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapo...and-2-arrested

UPDATE: The two men who were in the car that crashed through security barriers near the Shangri-La Hotel on Sunday were charged in court with heroin trafficking on Monday, reported The Straits Times.

"Mohamed Ismail, 31, and Muhammad Syahid Mohamed Yasin, 26, were both charged with possessing three packets of approximately 9 grams of heroin for the purpose of trafficking," said the report.

Not gonna shed any tears on idiots not stopping at a checkpoint. It's just their luck that it's a sensitive time, else the police would have just chased them instead of shooting the driver dead.

They did stop at the checkpoint. It is just when asked to open the boot, they tried to get away.

Also the US defence secretary Ash Carter is at the event. Probably what triggered the ISIS conspiracy theory.

Update :

Aw yiss.

Policeman Who Shot Driver Dead Abused His Power

Taking stupid to the next level.

DECEASED WIFE: IS THE POLICE JUSTIFIED TO SHOOT DEAD MY HUSBAND BECAUSE HE RUN AWAY?

It is not an M16. Look at the size of the hole in the windshield, it is around the size of a fist. A 5.56x45mm doesn't make a hole that big - has to be a machine gun round fired at a very high velocity.

Looks like 7.62 round....seems smaller than 50 cal at the very least

And you can't blame the wife you know

Stupid incident is stupid. The thing that he died for is also stupid so you can't blame her. Just because you cannot fault the police doesn't mean the guy died for a good reason or a wonderful event either

People saying he deserves it are just as much bastard whoresons as they think he is. Likewise people insulting the wife.... They have no right and certainly they are on an even lower moral ground than any of the actual parties involved....But then again....I don't expect much from local netizens.....

Err... yes they are, under the army RoE, ramming the car through the checkpoint counts as using the car as a deadly weapon, so deadly force is justified.

I'm personally guessing that those website and people who post those comments and neither been through NS or are just trying to stir up fears.

These are FB extracts. They probably never served in the combat role, or even served at all.

Besides, I don't see the site as drawing up stuff to incite - they tend to draw up writings that make the authors look stupid, with the occassional thoughtful Zen master or the angry righteous looking to fix an injustice (sometimes overdoing it).

Saw another post that asked for monetary donations so that the wife can provide for the child.

Inquiry was complete. News reveals that the Gurkha Contingent was credited for the lawful shooting.

Maybe the big boss inside the summit ordered those drugs?

They SHOULD be. Give that shooter a medal.

I was thinking so too. Either that or one of their aides who needed the snort in the backroom.

Wow, I didn't know about this.

Clean shot from sniper? That's pretty badass, quite unexpected of the police.

Oh wait, it's the Gurkha....Yeah that makes more sense.
