I've been told like this in Animax-Asia forums for many times especially in regarding of K-On. Yes, K-On is 'girly' but I'm doubt it was marketed towards teenage girls. Maybe it's popularity among Japanese teenage girls which make most of them confused on who's the actual target audiences.

There's no doubt at all that it was pitched for young male teens/adults. Western anime fans are simply ... okay, I'll be nice ... uninformed. K-On! was designed for *males*. Luckily, the female director added touches that gave the series enough traction for cross-over appeal in Japan and overseas (e.g. dialed down the fanservice a bit and dialed up the relationships)

Ichigo Masimaro is another example -- it is a great show for women but the fact is, it was designed and sold to *males*.

K-ON ran in Comic Time Kirara, a moe-focused 4-koma minor magazine aimed at males, with readership of 80% male.

So there's no question anywhere about its intended demographics.

The guy probably meant he doesn't like "shows featuring mostly girls" or girl lead shows.

I might be interrupting but I think it as to do with all the shoujo tropes that might be in play. I notice that in 'girly' shows they place a lot of emphasis on relationships and conversations rather than emotionally driven action scenes. I often found that it usually involves romance or friendships and most of the mail demographic only want to see action (and boobs). With that said, I guess it has mostly to do with the tropes in play as well as the aesthestics.

Well, you may be onto something there. Some people might initially look a show like Madoka and think "They're going to talk about their feelings!!" and run away in terror.

I will say that one of the things that's interesting about anime (and the related industries), as opposed to a lot of Western entertainment, is that there are entire categories of shows that are "relationship-driven/feeling-centric content for guys". There's no doubt that this is weird for some people because it goes very much against the grain.

That is one of the specific qualities that lured me into anime. Live-action western entertainment sometimes seems more cartoonish/shallow than animated anime.

Heh, it goes against the grain of what they've focused on and are familiar with ... but not really against the grain of the overall arena of literary material.

Its just ... what is being called "guy stuff" is really largely designed for YOUNG boys (boom, shouting, and maybe a boob). People would do well to realize its a small part of the spectrum out there and there's nothing wrong with liking more than one kind of story/music/etc.

This manga that was voted the most impactful new manga of the year by various editors in professional manga magazines......
kinda broke all boundaries of shoujo manga.

Ore Monogatari (Story of ME!), running in Bessatsu Margaret.
Yeah, THE Bessatsu Margaret, known for fluffy shoujo of shoujo mangas.

And yes. That's the protagonist.
Manly, honest, good-hearted man... but looks like a typical un-pretty oyaji, not a hint of bishounen in him.
He's winning the hearts of girls and ladies all over the manga readership with his sheer human quality though.

Just kinda adds to the whole perception issue spoken above.
If this manga gets animated (and with the current popularity, it may be matter of time!) it will be technically considered a "girls' show".
