I suppose that small difference, his envy of an ability he thought to be rightfully his, could have been the start of what led him to become Kishin-ed.

Do think the weapon thing was part of it. The fact that he as the older brother only got the sword while the younger sister inexplicably got everything would have to hit somewhere. But I think it really had to do with how the family viewed him and how he thought Tsubaki viewed him.

He felt that under that reserved personality she was hiding negative feelings for him. That she pitied, despised, and that she was feeling superior over him. Of course that wasn't the case and she didn't show her true feelings for other reasons. Concerns that if she showed what she really felt that she wouldn't be accepted or that it'd cause trouble especially with her brother.

Sadly a misunderstanding helped to fuel the negative feelings inside of Masamune. Once he finally got to see her true feelings at the end of that fight he understood.

Translation quibble:

For Ryoku's last line as Black Star is leaving the village, shouldn't it be "Even if he wasn't Star Clan, I don't think I'd like him" instead of "If he wasn't a member of the Star Clan, I think I might like him"? Basically the opposite meaning, which seems both funnier and more meaningful to me. The idea being that he's grown to hate him for who he is (an annoying loudmouth) instead of from his prejudices against the Star Clan.

For reference, the Japanese seems to be "aitsu... Hoshizoku ja nakutemo, suki ni narenai na..." On a literal interpretation, I think I'm right, but I think it's reasonably likely that there's a more idiomatic usage I'm not aware of.

Tsubaki has now just beat Stein for my favorite character of this show. This episode was just beyond good, with the action sequences being animated just as good as ever and the final clash with Tsubaki and her brother was beyond epic. I dare say that may have been one of my favorite anime fights. Black Star continues to grow on me and I think at this point Tsubaki and Black Star are my favorite team of the main three.

This series keeps getting better and better especially with the fights.

Do think that's kind of what Black Star was shooting for. If he's going to be disliked lets make it because of the way he acts right now. Instead of getting the hate coming from what his relatives did that isn't his fault.

Of course most of the village will still just hate the guy for having relations to the Star Clan, but at least one person had a changed opinion. Certainly not scared of Black Star any longer.

I believe Masumune felt he was being pitied by his family because he didn't inherit the abilities he was supposed to. His family was obviously trying to say "it is all right, we still love you" but he probably felt insecure about it, and thought he had disappointed them.

His little sister, who had adopted the abilities he was supposed to get also wanted to stay close to him, but he saw this as her pitying him for not having inherited his birth-right, and felt that she was just trying to take the moral high-ground; when in truth she just wanted to hang out with him and not be rejected for being selfish.


Due to his own insecurity, and a huge misunderstanding of his family, he slowly started to resent them and started to walk the path of the Kishin.

When he finally realized how Tsubaki, and thus his family truly felt, he was at piece, thus he comment when Tsubaki defeated him.



Of course, this is just how I saw it.

omg, that was great. Didn't watch any previews cause i watched both episodes together, and that was just, wow. Tsubaki's fighting was epic, and black star was just touching. I expected black star to somehow fight with tsubaki as well, but this is just as good, maybe even better.

Actually thought it might be a nice idea to go and watch the last two episodes like that. Really was a great couple of episodes that made this team stand out all the more. These two should get a lot more souls in the future, but few will probably compare to the sentimental value of this one.

I think one of my favorite scenes in this episode was the little vacuum diagram of Tsubaki vs. her brother's soul. I loved it when Tsubaki's soul fought its way out of being absorbed. It was both cute and awesome. I was totally cheering during that part.

The Tsubaki hugging bloody Black Star was so sad ..I almost cried ..but yay for tsubaki being her brother

It means that his Soul wavelength can't handle the power requirements of the Fey Blade mode yet

Yeah should be something when he's able to fully use it. I mean now the best he can do is look cool before collapsing on the ground . Getting a new ability won't be so easy. Although that fight for Tsubaki was anything but easy. At any rate that team will just keep getting stronger.
