Nevertheless, I also dislike Hayate no Gotoku. In the beginning I was laughing and enjoying the gags and references but later I found myself staring at the monitor motionlessly. That means Lucky Star is the only comedic show which I actually appreciate, not to mention the moe(ness) of the 4 *ahem* 3 high school girls. Sorry, Miyuki isn't my type and as I usually got burned out after the day's work, her exposition is a perfect 'catalyst' for deep sleep. To sum it up, Lucky Star, is #1 Like some people, I have not seen Initial D but I certainly have heard of it and naturally it popped into my mind during the race in LS. In fact, the movie, Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift, came first and memories of drifts and awesome racings flooded my mind before I recalled Initial D as more appropriate reference due to its nature (animation). |

but for each his own, and that's a topic for another thread (go check out SnH thread in the Fansubbed section if you want to discuss more about it ) Quote:
i actually fell asleep once during her one of her lecture although i don't *dislike* or even hate her (i'll reserve that for akira ), i can't help but hoping we could get less lecturing and more kagami x konata sniping each other or tsukasa cute moments ..... it's kinda sad though looking at her vote counts in the "most favorite L*C main chara poll" |

Yup, best Initial D parody ever, if there was any before it.
Even though kj1980 said it was more of a Japan-only reference, I can't believe I felt a sense of familiarity when Kona-chan did her "Timotei" pose. I knew she was probably referring to the shampoo ad as I've heard of the shampoo brand Timotei a long time ago. |

I myself find Seto No Hanayome extremely repetitive. Seemingly every episode we get the father-in-law angry, hero trying desperately to avoid his wrath, the hero trying desperately to hide the girls' identity, the hero and his mom fawning over the afro dude, etc. Probably the only reason why I'm still following it is because I'm hoping, hope against hope, that Osana-Najimi wins. (fat chance at that XD)
Hayate no Gotoku I really watch as a guilty pleasure; I'm only in it for the maids, as they're the most interesting characters of the bunch. And yeah, the cat too. And the pink haired girl as well. And... Nagarasete Airantou, I find I'm losing interest in the show. SnH may be repetitive, but at least it's still amusing so far. I might be watching HnG (I just realized that's the same abbreviation for Hikaru no Go XD) just for the maids, but at least more characters are being introduced each episode to make things fresh. NA does neither, and I'm this close --> <-- to dropping it despite Suzu IMO being the cutest anime character in this season. Lucky Star on the other hand, is the only show that has made me laugh every episode (HnG made me laugh till eps 3, the others maybe not even eps 1). I also watch every fansub group's version of each episode, which is something odd because I tend to fast forward a lot in parts of a show I find slow (which happens often). I can't get tired of it; even this latest episode, which IMO is the least interesting for me, I have watched three times for AFK and once for JEEBS. But I don't think LS is the anime of the season for me. Sure it excels in its genre, but there are other shows that I like more. Darker than Black, RomeoXJuliet, Towards Terra, and even Gigantic Formula (yes yes laugh at me XD) I enjoy more as a show. Its just theres more things to talk about LS, hence my rewatches to get everything (other shows, include those I listed, I watch only once). Also, the only reason my avy/sig is from it is because its basically the only show in which people are making avy/sigs for. XD

Also for me Lucky Star is strong for the cultural jokes it has and weak only when the focus of the jokes is placed elsewhere (except in a few occasions). Not only might you laugh, but your just as likely to learn something new. Not a lot of Japanese comedies have this (they prefer a lot of slapstick I find), but American ones often do, which is part of the reason for my preference for American comedy over Japanese. Not to say the Japanese can't do it too, but I've found they like repeating the same material a lot (Hard Gay anyone) and well I'm sure people know what happens once you go down that road. |

The slaptick comedies we see from Japan are just the tip of the "japanese comedy" iceberg; we can see a bit of the other kind of japanese comedy in Kitano's "Kid Return", when the comical duo show up.
I am willing to bet that most of the other japanese comedies the foreigner is going to see, when he is actually in Japan, may not be fun to him; matter of education, cultural context, etc... The same goes for the comedy of ever other countries. |

There are American forms of comedy that rely on "predictableness" and slapstick (anyone remember Steve Martin? Rodney Dangerfield?) -- that date back to things like the Three Stooges or vaudeville. Those are the types of things I compare to much of Japanese humor (especially the manzai style --- Abbott and Costello would fit right in).

Haven't paid much attention ... but that was true in the 90s... so what DO they wear these days? I assume there's still some sort of uniform swimwear.

Actually, the 1990s (more like the late Showa to early Heisei era) was a turning point. They weren't that popular with the girls to begin with, so they gradually phased them out during that time. School swimsuits nowadays have become more fashionable and sporty, whose designs are fitted to the school logo's and colors. Competitive sports and Unitard swimsuits are the norm these days as they provide less strain on body and reduce drag when swimming.

I'm trying to get my hands on one (along with a couple seiraa fuku), so when I first heard they were not being used so much these days, I was rather disappointed... but that also is why I was a bit surprised when I saw Kona in one (though knowing Kona, I shouldn't have been surprised at all ).
