And if what this GAF-insider is saying is true, this is but a small drop of what Sony is wanting to achieve.

Of course, until pricing, availability, content offered, and what are the limitations vs actual cable is revealed, this doesn't mean anything... but if it's very very competitive... MS is going to be literally blindsided.

Sony are talking to Viacom, Disney, Fox and Time Warner over a massive shakeup of IPTV. The service would almost be like cable, but over the internet. The channels and content from these major companies would be offered via Sony's new PS-TV service (available via PS4, PS3, and a bunch of other Sony devices, plus Android and iOS), consumers would pay Sony a monthly sub fee and Sony pay for content licencing/carriage over PS TV. For Sony it gets them around the age old problem of not being able to own their own network because they are Japanese and by partnering with TW, they are looking to cut a deal for cheap bandwidth. One of the guys also expects them to cut deals with AT&T and other major ISPs for prime bandwidth (non-neutral internet).

Finally, he said Sony don't expect to make any money from the venture for at least 5 years which they think will be all about hooking in consumers and content providers, stupidly Sony would have to licence their own content from Starz, but at a reduced rate because of certain clauses in their deal. He said after the 5 year period Sony think they will have a large enough consumer base to dictate terms to content providers and ISPs to increase margins, and their content licencing deal with Starz comes to an end so that would represent a major annual saving. He said Sony want to launch Sony TV channels and Sony Movie channels with all of their own content which is vast because it includes Screen Gems.

If it is true that Sony is willing to make literally zero profit from this streaming service for 5 years, it would really hurt MS. As MS clearly wanted to make money from the TV division. At the very least it would force MS to make the same concessions.

Isn't this massively better than what MS has right now? The XBox one's entire awesome thing is that it has an HDMI in that let's you plug your cable box into it and thus have an xbox one overlay over your tv stuff.

With this, sony has the same thing except it's all happening inside a single environment without the need for an exterior cable box and subscription. All you need is internet service, and assuming the subscription fee for this sony tv thing is comparable to what you pay for regular cable service, sony's offering seems much simpler to use.

What is amazing is that Sony got the deal at all. The reason MS was forced to use XB1 in such a difficult fashion was because Content providers resist streaming content. Maybe Sony just has more connections in the TV business and was able to twist some arms.

As usual, devil in the details.

What Sony is trying to accomplish isn't something new, it's just that everyone who tried to get it done has failed miserably.

We need to know how 'competitive' this IPTV service actually is against the respective cable offerings first. There's definitely more to it than meets the eye, if only because content owners want to have their cake, eat it, and have 3 more cakes as well.

And there's also no guarantee Sony will be able to sign every partner on this service.

Sony is a media/content company.

they produce movies, music and tv shows themselves. Unlike MS, Sony don't require a 3rd party company for content.

If Xbox 1 fails miserable this year, it could be a blessing in disguise for Microsoft. Microsoft could get better after this ordeal. Nevertheless, Sony is now poking the "dead body" with a stick now.

Wish the same can be said about Electronic Arts, has their policy for 80 dollars games official or still a rumor?

Yeah... because they'd hav a viable reason to fire all the idiots who made those descisions on the xbox team.

This. At least here in my neck of the woods Sony owns 4 or 5 of the most watched cable tv channels, they would only need to add those to the ps4 to get quite a few people interested. It's a lot easier to do these kinds of deals when you actually have leverage over the people you're negotiating with.

Didn't they? I thought they have fired several people already. There is a reason that we manage to have all those 180 right now.

True, but the clean up has also done a 180 on the good parts as well on the Xbox such as which countries will have Xbox 1 on release date which is unfortunate.

Really, there are apparently many youtube videos of it as well many articles. Surprise to see EA not making anything official yet.

I can play it for several hours like this, either playing games, movies, or just watching Netflix without anything happening other than how loud the fan is.

So how bad a sign is this?
My PS3 has done that for YEARS.

What exclusives does PS4 have? I have the feeling that at E3 Xbone presented most of its exclusives, but PS4 did not.

What we know so far. ( based on announced title, studio-count, leaks, and developers telling the press they're working on exclusive PS4 stuff, etc )

Last Guardian on PS4 would be one hell of an advantage for Sony. I'll forgive them for not making the PS3 release if they can get it out sooner on the new hardware and make it look fantastic.
