I'm relatively new into this whole Anime deal. It all started about 1 year ago when a certain individual (He can also be found in this forum) showed me a few episodes of DragonballZ. I had seen some other Animes before, but only a few episodes and I wasn't interested in them. However, after DBZ I started paying more attention to the world of Anime.

I first stumbled across Anime about 3 years ago, when I got Hellsing from a friend of mine. I liked it a lot but surprisingly I didn't feel like checking out other series back then. It took quite some time until my next encounter with anime, which was just a few months ago. I watched the Animatrix with very low expectations and was quite startled when I liked it about a thousand times better than the real thing.

The next show I watched was Elfen Lied (around november '06) which led me way past the point of no return.

Many, many years ago, I saw a movie called Magic Boy, a.k.a. Shonen Sarutobe Sasuke. It made every Disney movie I'd ever seen seem pedestrian; it was the greatest movie ever made. (Later I saw Forbidden Planet, and that was the greatest movie ever made, but that's another story.) I never saw it again, though, and eventually I forgot about it.

Years later I read about a Japanese movie called Princess Mononoke. It sounded interesting, and I thought it might be worth a look if the opportunity arose. I subsequently found that a friend had the DVD. Soon after that, Spirited Away was actually shown in a theatre -- briefly, without any advertising -- in Kansas, and I decided to further investigate Japanese animation. I wasn't terribly impressed by the first few series I watched, but then I discovered Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei. Eventually I ended up here.

I was brought up in Belgium, where Club Dorothy a french kids show was (and perhaps still is) aired regularly. It had DBZ, sailormoon, Captain Tsubasa and Saint Seiya. After moving to England I kinda dropped it, but picked it up again when I decided to buy Akira and Ninja scroll, then university, broadband and bittorrent formed an unholy trinity

Seems to me from reading everyones' posts that most of us have similar reasons for getting into anime, it's nice, kinda reassuring to not be the only addict XD.

Digimon and Miyazaki movies did it for me. My younger cousin got me hooked on Digimon when I was 11 and little did I know I had been watching Miyazaki movies throughout my younger years. I discovered it was anime and just went head first into it all.

Catching Macross Plus back in late '97 on Teletoon around when the channel first came out. I had sort of known what anime was for about a year or so before that but had not yet seen anything that really wowed me or drew me to it.

As a kid I watched the old 1980's color remake of Astroboy. I was too young to know it was "anime" at that point but I knew there was something different about it from other cartoons at the time as it just had that different, more mature feel and style to it.

Over the years up too my first year of highschool in late 96, I hadnt seen any major anime, I recall catching an episode of two of the original english dub of Dragonball, but aside from that, and the random hentai I would sometimes come across on the net while looking for porn, I really hadnt seen any major anime. Also, seeing the hentai on the net had kind of made me start to think that most anime would always have some explicit sex or nudity in it as a matter of course. As such, one of the reasons I decided to stay up late to catch this "Macross Plus" was because my horny teenage mind was partly expecting to see some cartoon porn or atleast nudity.

Well, it never happened of course, but I was not dissappointed at all, as soon as I saw the opening "Dedicated to all pioneers..." text come on the screen before the episode started it was almost like I was caught in a trance and the show, opening with Myung's theme starting to play just drew me right in. By the end of the first OVA, I was completely stunned at how amazing it was, I was finally shown the true potential and greatness that anime had to offer and the developing stereotype of most anime just being dirty japanese cartoons was instantly wiped from my mind for good. (Though I do still love my hentai.

)

From that point on it was a journey of active discovery as I saught out other great shows and just immersed myself into the fandom more and more.

Bubblegum Crisis 2040 was the anime that started it all for me. I was flicking through channels one night and came across it. That's pretty much it really - exciting story, no?

For me, like alot of people i first watched pokemon and DBZ, but then i really didn't realise that they were anime and was just watching it episodically day by day on normal TV. Once they finished i really didn't care either.

My first ecounter into the actual anime world was when i watched Shuffle on Winamp TV and i thought man, for some reason it's addictive to watch. That was the start of me actually seeking out and downloading anime and not just watch what anime is released on TV... I've come a long way from the beginning so yeah it's good..

Now all i need to complete my anime otaku transformation is to attend animania convention in Australia and I'm officially hooked on anime till i die.. lol

I like Fanatsy and Mythology and anime provides me just that . I used to watch lot of cartoons as a kid and among my fave cartoons was also Robotech . At that point I didnt know the difffrence between anime and cartoons ( think 92 5-6 years old ) . When I learnt about that some of my fave cartoons were anime I got hooked on and still am

I got into super robot mecha anime because of the anime Daimos on a local TV channel many years ago.

But years later I got into the variety of genres in anime because the many diverse genres make original and very entertaining anime

I like romantic comedies the most.

when i was very young i watched a lot of cartoons on the TV.
one of them was Samurai Pizza Cats. I've already seen anime child series such as 'dommel', 'AJK' and tom sawyer but SMP was different from those. I loved the style very much, incombination with the humor

until 1998/2000 i didn't watch anime. I started again by picking up the pokemon manace (years back it was very hot in NL) and i continued with digimon, dragonball z, gundam, sailor moon, transformers, shinzo and card captor sakura.

in 2004/2005 i started watching series who weren't broadcast.
first one's i saw were Love Hina, Chobits, Naruto and Onegai Sensei/Twins

so basicly.. it grew on me during my life...

best anime i've seen so far:

Scrapped Princess
Utawarerumono
Samurai Pizza Cats
Onegai Sensei/Twins
Mon Colle Knights (character design is awsome!)
Gundam Wings

worst anime i've seen:
kimi ga nozomu eien (way too deep for me)
shingetsutan tsukihime (boring thriller)
DearS (strong copy of chobits)

Well let's see....when I was younger I watched the stuff they had on TV here, aka Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, Pokemon.

Then when I was around 13 I randomly came upon the word "Naruto" in a message forum, so I decided to search it and came up with episode number 1, which I got hooked on and followed obsessively. I know we all like to say it is a poorly made or repetitive anime, and maybe now it is, but I tell you, back when I was first watching it week by week, it was the best thing I'd ever seen.

So naturally I began to be interested in other kinds of anime and started watching the other genres, like Kare Kano, etc . For some reason I can't recall I stopped watching for a while but then Honey and Clover brought me back to the fold. Then, fairly recently I came across some Ghibli films, "Princess Mononoke", "Whisper of the Heart" and now I am a genuine Ghibli fanatic.

Dragonball Z was my first contact with anime with a lot of people, then I remember Samurai Pizza Cats and Megaman! I would rush home from Junior High to catch it. Those were sooo great. Then the Yu Yu Hakusho and Kenshin line up was just amazing. When they canceled it, I was so pissed. You know in scary movie, when he says,"TV shows don't make psychos, canceling them does!". I felt that... =(

Then I learned about animesuki, and of all the animes listed I randomly chose Naruto which I've never heard of before. And then... A new world was opened to me.

Let's see...my parents called home asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I was online, and I just happened to see a Fullmetal Alchemist ad. Without thinking, I just said "Fullmetal Alchemist manga." And thus, my ascension(or descension, depending on your POV) toward otaku-ism began.

I just kind of trickled into anime, from way back in the "Speed Racer" days. (I seem to be around the same vintage as Vexx, to remember Ultraman and Johnny Sokko as well as the old original Godzilla movies)

I was only generally interested in anime through Pokemon type shows and Final Fantasy games. When Youtube came along, I added Naruto to the list, then started branching out to other anime titles like Bleach and Ah My Goddess.

However, what got me into Torrents of fansubs was MegaTokyo and Tsunami Channel web comics, talking about titles I had no clue about. Youtube let me see what I was missing, and torrents let me see the shows in glorious detail.

I'm glad I went to the huge trouble of getting MKV h.264 files to work on my older system, since I would have missed seeing the Bartender and Nodame Cantabile series in 1280x720 format.
