ugh... this is really meant for us Fans, and not really meant to cater to new viewers which is all right but even as a die hard FSN fan who has religuously been waiting for this release. The story telling felt very very lacking, the cuts to the action just really felt off. I mean I understand it's a movie but even Ufotable's work on kara no kyoukai which is adaptation of a novel still didn't feel as disjointed as this.

People are referring to what actually happened in the VN, which was this. That's why Shirou could beat him, both his better ability at sword fighting and the aformentioned ability.

While it's true that in a regular sword spam Shirou would be at a disadvantage since he needs to keep materializing all the blades individually (which costs prana)...but when UBW is deployed, Gil is the one who would be at a disadvantage.

This is because the swords in Gil's treasury is finite while Shirou/Archer has access to potentially unlimited number of weapons which they can spam at will as long as they can keep their reality marble up.

He's also faster on the draw compared to Gil in UBW. Gil has to open numerous dimensional openings to his treasury and then set up his swords on each of the dimensional openings before he can fire......while Shirou/Archer just needs to levitate the existing swords on the ground and then fire.

Ufotable compressed the material but no where near to this degree. It still took 7 whole films to cover the story. Trying to fit the whole of UBW into 100 minute film is like trying to fit the whole of Lord of the Rings into just one 3 hour film.

You see, when Shirou traces a sword, he gets the skills of the original user too, so he is as proficient with the weapon as the original user of it was. Gil, OTOH, doesn't know how to use the weapons. If you read the VN, Shirou doesn't impale Gil with a sword rain, he slashes his arm off with a normal sword when he tries to use Ea. So, it's clear that he must have been fighting properly. He was sword-spamming too, but that alone could only ever lead to a draw. its not that easy. here's the answer in shirou's words:

he is only an "owner". he does not have one weapon, so he is not a "wielder" who can use his weapon to its maximum potential. even in this world, i am no match against any other servants. i cannot match the ultimate one* even with infinite swords. gilgamesh must have that ability**, but i do not. therefore, this is the only servant i can match. as we have the same ability, as we are both "owners", i am always one step ahead of him since my swords are there, ready to be used.

*note that ultimate one means someone who actually can use the weapons to their max potential (for instance assassin). hence, obvious implication that abilities do not transfer over.
**since gil has that ability, and shirou admitted he does not, it naturally means gil is superior to shirou in terms of basic combat.

as for shirou slashing gil's arm, it was explained earlier but ill elaborate:
at that particular moment, gil was defenseless. he was in the process of taking out his sword. shirou already had his out & so he went ahead & slashed. his advantage post ubw summoning made that possible; swordsmanship had nothing to do with it.

Eh. I thought it was more about Shirou and Archer being able to copy some of the original wielder's skills but like their projections, the skills(and strengths) they get is degraded compared to the original user's. For instance, Shirou was able to replicate Berserker's strength and use Berserker's Nine Lives Blade Works, which is skill-related and not a NP. It is more like Tsubame Gaeshi than anything. Yet, even when using the skills they got from the weapons(a degraded form), Shirou and Archer cannot defeat the original users who can use their weapons to their maximum potential.

However, against Gilgamesh those degraded skills should be enough against him.

As for the part about Gilgamesh having the abilities to defeat servants by sword-spamming but Shirou doesn't, I think that refers to Gilgamesh's ability to constantly use Gate of Babylon without using too much prana. Shirou needs to expend a lot of prana to sword-spam. So Gilgamesh can just keep up his attack and do what he wishes, whether it is to find the weapon the opponent is weak to or charge up Ea.

Well, I would assume that that would, at best, result in a double-kill, since he'd have to get into range first (which would allow Assassin to do the same), and in any case he was trying to hide his true abilities to prevent people working out who he was. So, Archer just didn't bother

HF Shirou does Nine Lives Bladeworks by copying Berserker's sword, so we know Shirou (and, therefore, Archer) can copy the skills of a weapon user. Similarly, it is stated several times that Shirou gets a certain amount of skill from weapons that he traces.

I don't think Gilgamesh could "run out" of weapons, could he? I mean, otherwise, with the intense amount he burns through every time he would've run out in like five seconds. Plus they get "destroyed" when they strike something, so that would mean they would be gone, but he always has a full stock it seems. I think the point with him having a "limited treasury" doesn't mean he can run out, but that unlike Shirou he can't use ANY WEAPON EVER THAT HE CAN IMAGINE but merely one of the weapons he has, even though that's still a ton.

So I don't think in a sword spam fight he would lose to Shirou, even in UBW, as far as running out of swords.

Yes, if UBW went on forever, Shirou would win because he didn't have to generate the swords, but Gilgamesh still would have won because Shirou DOES have to maintain it and he was only running off Rin's mana. If you watch the game text he even says his advantage is only a temporary one and if he let Gilgamesh recover he'd lose again. Basically Shirou wasn't stronger he just surprised Gilgamesh for a split second and managed to cut off his arm before he could recover, and even then Shirou still knew he'd lose if he let him get on his feet again.

In Fate though, Saber's sword was in fact "guiding" him to cut off Berserker's arm. I think that was the skills of the original user stored in Caliburn going into Shirou and helping him fight Berserker. In fact he was even able to block a few of Berserker's attacks that way. However, because he was not Saber herself, he did not have her complete proficiency to defeat Berserker with the sword alone. He also lacked Saber's innate skills to further boost the power, such as mana burst.

I guess that seems logical. I assumed that with both seeing Archer's UBW and seeing Gilgamesh constantly swordspamming at Berserker and during Shirou's fight, Shirou would have seen most if not all the weapons that Gil might have. And since when NP are broken they can't be recovered(the entire issue with broken phantasms) Shirou would have the advantage until Ea showed up. I also thought that there would be constant swordspamming between the two so more NP would be used. As long as Shirou could keep on attacking he would be fine, but once he stopped Gil would get serious and kill him with Ea. But I can see the entire prana drain issue.

But don't expect it tonight. Since there's typesetting, knowing UTW they're going to encode the typesets directly into the video (as should be done, as softsubbed typesets are horrible). That means it'll take probably about 5-6 hours to encode the 720p version, maybe 1-2 hours (at most) for the 480p version, plus the time to distribute to the distro team and upload to any file sharing site to lessen the load on seeders. I'd expect this tomorrow around 10am Eastern, at the absolute earliest.

Of course, that's assuming "Final QC" means it's an actual QC, and not a release check. If it's a release check, it could be out within an hour or two.

The actual coding and such would be, but unless they're doing a release check they'd still have to actually encode that into the video. Though it's possible they gave that higher priority so it could be encoding while the rest of the steps were doing done. In fact, that's probably what they did. Carry on!

He meant that if he allowed allowed Gil the time to use EA....then he would lose since he can't replicate that sword. (That's because he can only create swords made with earthly materials)

Also, while his treasury is vast...there is a limit to the number of weapons in Gilgamesh's vault. It may not have been clearly communicated in the game, but Gilgamesh actually reclaims all the swords he's fired after he uses them (also via dimensional gates since he can open them anywhere he pleases)

If you've read Fate/Zero, particularly the caster sea monster fight...it's pointed out that Gil was very reluctant to fight the monster because he felt that every sword he fired from GOB would have their value be tainted forever through contact with the monster and would not be worth recovering afterwards.

So we can surmise that there is a limit to his wealth (swords)


Also, as I mentioned before...Shirou/Archer has access to potentially unlimited number of weapons which they can spam at will as long as they can keep their reality marble up (which according to the wiki can be kept up for several minutes before the world crushes it). And unlike Gil who has to open dimensional gates to his treasury and set them up before he can fire them...Shirou/Archer just need to levitate and shoot them. The amount of which can be vast:

If they fire hundreds of swords simultaneously each turn, Gil will have no choice but to counter with the same amount at every turn....and no amount of wealth is THAT bottomless.

There's also the fact that Gil can only fire his swords from his treasury and has to reclaim them before they can be re-used. While Shirou/Archer can levitate the swords that weren't destroyed/still usable and re-use them at will. So not only are they faster on the draw....theirs is also recyclable.
