"Fate-chan...Fate-chan..." a voice called out my name waking me from my sleep.

"...rmmmm five more minutes..." I complained rolling over

"Fate-chan!" the voice got louder "You cant be slacking off so early in the morning! You'll be a bad influence on Vivio."

"Nanoha, please..." I groaned as I fought to keep the sheets from being pulled away from me "I stayed up with Yuuno all last night doing research for your students."

"And who'se fault is it you didnt allow for sleep? Now get up!"

I pouted as I got up and stretched. "You are too strict you know that?" I glared at her

"And you have no restraints" she looked back at me before heading to the kitchen "I'll be going ahead so please drop Vivio off at school ok?"

"Hai..." I sighed as I got ready for the day.

* * * * * * * * * *

"Good morning, Nanoha" I called out as she walked through the door.

"Morning Yuuno-kun" she responded happily "You are early today."

"No" I yawned "I fell asleep in the lab after Fate left. I'm still pretty exhausted."

"That is not good" she started correcting me "You and Fate-chan need to be ready at all times, who knows when we'll have to mobilize?"

I sighed and drifted my mind away as I received another one of Nanoha's famous lectures. I swear shes taking this whole instructor thing way too far sometimes.

"Do you understand Yuuno-kun?"

"Yeah I understand" I half lied "I'm going to go get some breakfast ok?" I diverted before she could say anything else.

*sigh* What happened to the cheerful outgoing girl I liked from back then? my mind reminisced its like shes become a completely different person now. I stepped outside onto the roof of the south wing of the Section VI headquarters to get some air and to be alone. I was about to go to my usual "thinking corner" when something caught my sight. There she was...standing with her back against the railing, staring off into the sky, her hair gently flowing into the wind. It must have been the angle of the sun that morning but Fate looked really beautiful--I mean she was beautiful before...but this...this just made her look really stunning. I couldn't move--or even breathe for that matter--thinking that this perfect picture in front of me would fade away into the wind the moment I did anything else.

"Ah, good morning Yuuno" she finally noticed me standing there like an idiot staring at her. "Care to join me?" she asked smiling gently yet never moving from her position.

"Good...morning..." was all I could say as I strolled up to her a little rigidly. How could I have never noticed her like this before? my mind started racing I guess it was because I was always preoccupied with trying to win Nanoha over my mind answered itself after a few moments.

"Here to clear your thoughts as well?" she asked

"Yeah..." I sighed defeated "you too huh?"

"Yeah" she nodded

"Its about Nanoha" we both said at the same time.

Fate and I blinked at each other for a little while before bursting out in laughter

"It seems we have the same problem" she stated wiping the tears from her eyes

"Seems so" I responded between catching my breath

"You want to go first?" she asked

"Ladies first?" I countered

"Fine..." she playfully pouted. "Where to begin" she sighed "I don't know...it just seems like Nanoha is becoming more and more of a perfectionist you know? I understand that she might have to be that way while teaching, but shes doing that even at home! Shes being very strict with Vivio that I am afraid the girl is going to turn into an automated robot before she becomes a teenager." she sighed again deeply "Its not just Vivio..." she continued "shes wearing me out also. Even waking up in the morning is slowly turning into a battle everyday. I explained to her what we were doing last night but she just wouldn't budge. I mean its not like we were out partying or doing something recreational, we are actually doing work to help out her students!" *argh* "Why doesn't she understand that?!" Fate slammed her hands on the rail.

"I know what you mean..." I started "I love my work, but I don't live my entire life off of it. Nanoha needs to learn that there is a time for seriousness and a time to just...let loose." I glanced up at the sky bringing back memories of when we were all kids "I have a confession to make..." Fate looked at me oddly but remained silent "I used to like Nanoha a lot back when we were growing up. I always thought that one day, when I got my feet planted on the ground, I would ask her out. It seems like I am a bit to late though...seeing as she isn't quite the same person I fell in love with back then." I looked at Fate who had surprise written all over her face. "Oh don't give me that look, you were after Nanoha too. Admit it! I know all about those little escapades you tried to pull her to just so you could get closer." I smirked

"Hey that's a secret!" she playfully punched me in the arm. "Truth be told...I don't know what to do anymore." she looked down a little saddened. "I just cant keep holding on like this...I'll break apart if I keep going."

"Yet its still hard to let go isn't it?" I smiled dryly

"Yeah...I cant seem to talk to her the same way I used to. Shes just acting like shes got so much on her mind that it seems like I don't have a place there anymore."

"It's ok...you always have me right? Hahaha" I joked

She looked over at me silently

"W-what..?" I started, thinking I might have offended her.

"You know something..." she leaned in closer to me "why is it that things feel so natural when I am talking to you? I mean it should be natural anyway since we all grew up together but...somehow...this is different. Its more...relaxing"

"Yeah" I laughed a little "its almost like we really click together." I continued my joke "We do have the same problems in our lives it seems. Ha ha ha."

"Ne..." she leaned in closer, sorta making me feel a little uncomfortable "would you like to have lunch with me today?"

"Eh?" I asked confused

"We haven't had lunch together in a while and..." she looked down and blushed a little bit "I would like to talk to you some more."

"O...ok" I stammered after seeing her blushing. "H-here at lunch?" I offered

"I'd like that" she whispered softly before pushing herself off the railing and giving me a soft kiss on the cheek "Thanks for talking to me this morning Yuuno" she waved as she started walking back to the building. "See you at lunch"

"Cya....later..." I stood there, stunned, watching her figure disappear from my sight. My hand at my cheek where she just...

Unknown to the two individuals a lone figure opened her eyes and looked up at the sky from her position on the roof of the doorway entrance overhang. Her lips grinning from ear to ear at the conversation. "Well, well..." the Commander of the Sixth Mobile Division sat up after Yuuno walked back inside. "This is getting interesting...I cant wait to see how this will all play out." She punched some buttons on a communicator that popped up "Rein" she called as the figure appeared on screen

"Yes, Mistress Hayate?"

"I want you to get the video cameras ready" she grinned even more "we have an interesting situation going on..."

"Surrender, Fate!" Yuuno shouted at me

"No! Never!" I shouted back desperately

"You cant escape!" Yuuno said looking me in the eyes.

"Ah! No!" I cried out

"Just you wait! The next one will be harder!" Yuuno grinned at me

"Yuuno, please not so hard!" I gasped for air

"Y-you too!" he called back breathing just as hard "you need to loosen up!"

"Please!" I begged "I'll break if you keep going like this!"

"I'm sorry *huff* but I cant resist...!"

"Yaaaaaaa!!" I screamed as I swung my racket full force at the tennis ball that was heading right for me. "POINT! GAME!!!" I cheered as the ball hit the corner of the court before Yuuno could rush over to it.

"You're a beast" he breathed as he collapsed to his knees.

"Victory!" I playfully rubbed it in his face while doing the ever-famous Final Fantasy VII victory pose. "You like that dont you" I teased Yuuno a little when he laughed at me for the pose.

"Yeah that was cute" he blushed a little bit

"It has been a while since I got to play a very exciting game." I said throwing him a towel before picking one up for myself. The sound of cheering came over from the observation deck from about half of the Mobile Six Division who came out to watch the match. "I didn't even see them" I laughed waving up at them.

"I was too focused running around myself" he admitted. "Good game, Fate"

"Thanks, you did really well too Yuuno" we shook hands "Hey are we still on for lunch?" I asked as I wiped the sweat off my head.

"I just have to turn in the research data we worked on yesterday to Shari so she can start fixing up the devices for Nanoha's students, but afterwards I will head over."

"Alright I'll see you then!" I replied before heading to the shower.

"Mistress Hayate?" Rein called out as she floated towards the commander's desk carrying a video camera over her head. "What do you need this for?" she asked after placing it down. "Cant you just use the magical cameras that we normally use?"

"I would love to Rein" Hayate answered "but our subjects are sensitive to magical signals. I would like to capture and observe them with as little interference as possible.

Rein looked at her a little confused, part of her wanted to know and part of her...just somehow told her...not to ask. In the end curiosity won over common sense. "Just what exactly are we going to be recording?"

Hayate stopped suddenly for a moment, making Rein regret her words. Hayate slowly turned and looked at Rein with a large grin on her face and her eyes sparkling "A possible new romance maybe? Fu-fu-fu"

Rein started to slowly back away in fear. She knew that laugh. That was the laugh that her mistress gave out whenever it was she was up to no good. Like the time she was forced to cross dress as a Gothic Lolita with cat ears and a tail just because her mistress was looking at an old fashion magazine.

"And just where are you going?" Hayate looked back over to Rein

"I...er...need to help Shari....with maintenance today and...BYE!" she flew with all her might towards the door.

"Too slow!" Hayate shouted as white binds formed around Rein and slowly pulled her back to her master.

"No! Let me go!" Rein shouted desperately

"Now now Rein-chan" the mistress grinned "You are going to help me out here...or else we'll have to play a little punishment game" she held up a small set of cat ears much to Rein's horror "ok?"

"Hai! hai! Anything but that! Please!"

"Hmm maybe I should have you wear it anyway just to make sure~~" she looked at it thoughtfully

Rein's eyes widened "Iyaaaaaaa~~~~!"

* * * * * * * * * *

"Sorry I'm late!" Yuuno called as he ran over to me.

"No, I didn't wait long." I shook my head "I had a little errand to run with Teana and it took a bit longer than I expected. I was thinking I was the one who was going to be late.

"And I still ended up appearing after you" he sighed "it is supposed to be the guy's role to show up first"

"Just what era are you from?" I teased "come on lets eat"

We opened up our bentos and started eating.

"Ooh that looks good."I noted looking at the beef piece he had on his plate

"It is, would you like to try one?" he asked

"Would you feed it to me?" I teased unknowingly. He looked at me stunned with a blush on his face "Oh, wow! Did I just say that?" I put my hand to my mouth and blushed a shade of red as well after finally understanding what I had just asked.

"Umm...here" he offered his bento box, trying to break the awkwardness.

I looked at it for a bit and then at him. "Let's try it..." I almost whispered

"Eh?" he blinked at me several times

"F...feed it t-to me" I looked down and stammered blushing even more as the words continued to flow from my trembling lips

"O....o-ok" Yuuno slowly picked up his chopsticks and, with shaking hands, held it up in front of me.

Before he could blink, I had darted forward, grabbed the piece of food, leaned back, and was chewing it lightly. Had I known any better I could have sworn I had just used Sonic Move.

"Whoa!" he jumped back at my sudden reaction

"Sorry..." I said between munching while holding my hand in front of my mouth

"The food isn't going to run...hahaha" he laughed awkwardly

"Sorry I made you do that" I bowed in apology "I just wanted to always try that but.."

"No-no! its my fault for being so awkward" he held up his hands. "Ok then!" he tried to recollect himself "let's eat!"

"Ohoho~~" Hayate grinned in her dark office staring at the monitor in front of her. "This is quite the interesting turnout indeed." she pressed the button to open a communication line to Rein "That is enough for now Rein. You should come back before they take notice of you."

"Hai"

Hayate shut off the monitor as the lights turned back on. "I wonder what I can do with this..." she grinned to herself in the quiet spanse of her office. "It will only get more interesting from here..." *evil laugh*

If I were to pick up Lyrical days again and do it maybe 3 days a week, would you guys want to start doing the interactive thing with it again? It wouldn't slow down AlternativeS any really.

Yeeeeeees! I'd totally play! I came across Lyrical Days by chance on that one site not too long ago and read it in one sitting. Really great stuff, so you bet your ass I want mooore!

"Yaaaaaaa!!" I screamed as I swung my racket full force at the tennisball that was heading right for me. "POINT! GAME!!!" I cheered as the ball hit the corner of the court before Yuuno could rush over to it.

"You're a beast" he breathed as she collapsed to his knees.

"Victory!" I playfully rubbed it in his face while doing the ever-famous Final Fantasy VII victory pose. "You like that dont you" I teased Yuuno a little when he laughed at me for the pose.

"Yeah that was cute" he blushed a little bit

"It has been a while since I got to play a very exciting game." I said throwing him a towel before picking one up for myself. The sound of cheering came over from the observation deck from about half of the Mobile Six Division who came out to watch the match. "I didn't even see them" I laughed waving up at them.

"I was too focused running around myself" he admitted. "Good game, Fate"

"Thanks, you did really well too Yuuno" we shook hands "Hey are we still on for lunch?" I asked as I wiped the sweat off my head.

"I just have to turn in the research data we worked on yesterday to Shari so she can start fixing up the devices for Nanoha's students, but afterwards I will head over."

"Alright I'll see you then!" I replied before heading to the shower.

"Mistress Hayate?" Rein called out as she floated towards the commander's desk carrying a video camera over her head. "What do you need this for?" she asked after placing it down. "Cant you just use the magical cameras that we normally use?"

"I would love to Rein" Hayate answered "but our subjects are sensitive to magical signals. I would like to capture and observe them with as little interference as possible.

Rein looked at her a little confused, part of her wanted to know and part of her...just somehow told her...not to ask. In the end curiosity won over common sense. "Just what exactly are we going to be recording?"

Hayate stopped suddenly for a moment, making Rein regret her words. Hayate slowly turned and looked at Rein with a large grin on her face and her eyes sparkling "A possible new romance maybe? Fu-fu-fu"

Rein started to slowly back away in fear. She knew that laugh. That was the laugh that her mistress gave out whenever it was she was up to no good. Like the time she was forced to cross dress as a Gothic Lolita with cat ears and a tail just because her mistress was looking at an old fashion magazine.

"And just where are you going?" Hayate looked back over to Rein

"I...er...need to help Shari....with maintenance today and...BYE!" she flew with all her might towards the door.

"Too slow!" Hayate shouted as white binds formed around Rein and slowly pulled her back to her master.

"No! Let me go!" Rein shouted desperately

"Now now Rein-chan" the mistress grinned "You are going to help me out here...or else we'll have to play a little punishment game" she held up a small set of cat ears much to Rein's horror "ok?"

"Hai! hai! Anything but that! Please!"

"Hmm maybe I should have you wear it anyway just to make sure~~" she looked at it thoughtfully

Rein's eyes widened "Iyaaaaaaa~~~~!"

"Sorry I'm late!" Yuuno called as he ran over to me.

"No, I didn't wait long." I shook my head "I had a little errand to run with Teana and it took a bit longer than I expected. I was thinking I was the one who was going to be late.

"And I still ended up appearing after you" he sighed "it is supposed to be the guy's role to show up first"

"Just what era are you from?" I teased "come on lets eat"

We opened up our bentos and started eating.

"Ooh that looks good."I noted looking at the beef piece he had on his plate

"It is, would you like to try one?" he asked

"Would you feed it to me?" I teased unknowingly. He looked at me stunned with a blush on his face "Oh, wow! Did I just say that?" I put my hand to my mouth and blushed a shade of red as well after finally understanding what I had just asked.

"Umm...here" he offered his bento box, trying to break the awkwardness.

I looked at it for a bit and then at him. "Let's try it..." I almost whispered

"Eh?" he blinked at me several times

"F...feed it t-to me" I looked down and stammered blushing even more as the words continued to flow from my trembling lips

"O....o-ok" Yuuno slowly picked up his chopsticks and, with shaking hands, held it up in front of me.

Before he could blink, I had darted forward, grabbed the piece of food, leaned back, and was chewing it lightly. Had I known any better I could have sworn I had just used Sonic Move.

"Whoa!" he jumped back at my sudden reaction

"Sorry..." I said between munching while holding my hand in front of my mouth

"The food isn't going to run...hahaha" he laughed awkwardly

"Sorry I made you do that" I bowed in apology "I just wanted to always try that but.."

"No-no! its my fault for being so awkward" he held up his hands. "Ok then!" he tried to recollect himself "let's eat!"

* * * * * * * * * *

"Ohoho~~" Hayate grinned in her dark office staring at the monitor in front of her. "This is quite the interesting turnout indeed." she pressed the button to open a communication line to Rein "That is enough for now Rein. You should come back before they take notice of you."

"Hai"

Hayate shut off the monitor as the lights turned back on. "I wonder what I can do with this..." she grinned to herself in the quiet spanse of her office. "It will only get more interesting from here..." *evil laugh*

Testarossa sealed her creation shortly after producing it, likely as a result of the ID proving too untrustworthy with any revival process. Ten years ago, however, the ID was unsealed by subject P. Testarossa's second daughter, Fate Testarossa (note: see report on Testarossa family for further information), in an attempt to revive her sister.

As is to be expected of an inexperienced youth attempting to forge a contract with an Infernal Device, the attempt degenerated quickly, and while subject A. Testarossa was successfully revived both her and subject F. Testarossa were nearly consumed by the ID. Only the intervention of subject F. Testarossa's familiar prevented their deaths, though the familiar lost it's life in doing so.

Subject P. Testarossa sealed and destroyed the ID after the incident and has since made reparations to the Empire for violating the Treaty of Enhasa.

"And you have no restraints" she looked back at me before heading to the kitchen "I'll be going ahead so please drop Vivio off at school ok?"

"Hai..." I sighed as I got ready for the day.

"Good morning, Nanoha" I called out as she walked through the door.

"Morning Yuuno-kun" she responded happily "You are early today."

"No" I yawned "I fell asleep in the lab after Fate left. I'm still pretty exhausted."

"That is not good" she started correcting me "You and Fate-chan need to be ready at all times, who knows when we'll have to mobilize?"

I sighed and drifted my mind away as I received another one of Nanoha's famous lectures. I swear shes taking this whole instructor thing way too far sometimes.

"Do you understand Yuuno-kun?"

"Yeah I understand" I half lied "I'm going to go get some breakfast ok?" I diverted before she could say anything else.

*sigh* What happened to the cheerful outgoing girl I liked from back then? my mind reminisced its like shes become a completely different person now. I stepped outside onto the roof of the south wing of the Section VI headquarters to get some air and to be alone. I was about to go to my usual "thinking corner" when something caught my sight. There she was...standing with her back against the railing, staring off into the sky, her hair gently flowing into the wind. It must have been the angle of the sun that morning but Fate looked really beautiful--I mean she was beautiful before...but this...this just made her look really stunning. I couldn't move--or even breathe for that matter--thinking that this perfect picture in front of me would fade away into the wind the moment I did anything else.

"Ah, good morning Yuuno" she finally noticed me standing there like an idiot staring at her. "Care to join me?" she asked smiling gently yet never moving from her position.

"Good...morning..." was all I could say as I strolled up to her a little rigidly. How could I have never noticed her like this before? my mind started racing I guess it was because I was always preoccupied with trying to win Nanoha over my mind answered itself after a few moments.

"Here to clear your thoughts as well?" she asked

"Yeah..." I sighed defeated "you too huh?"

"Yeah" she nodded

"Its about Nanoha" we both said at the same time.

Fate and I blinked at each other for a little while before bursting out in laughter

"It seems we have the same problem" she stated wiping the tears from her eyes

"Seems so" I responded between catching my breath

"You want to go first?" she asked

"Ladies first?" I countered

"Fine..." she playfully pouted. "Where to begin" she sighed "I don't know...it just seems like Nanoha is becoming more and more of a perfectionist you know? I understand that she might have to be that way while teaching, but shes doing that even at home! Shes being very strict with Vivio that I am afraid the girl is going to turn into an automated robot before she becomes a teenager." she sighed again deeply "Its not just Vivio..." she continued "shes wearing me out also. Even waking up in the morning is slowly turning into a battle everyday. I explained to her what we were doing last night but she just wouldn't budge. I mean its not like we were out partying or doing something recreational, we are actually doing work to help out her students!" *argh* "Why doesn't she understand that?!" Fate slammed her hands on the rail.

"I know what you mean..." I started "I love my work, but I don't live my entire life off of it. Nanoha needs to learn that there is a time for seriousness and a time to just...let loose." I glanced up at the sky bringing back memories of when we were all kids "I have a confession to make..." Fate looked at me oddly but remained silent "I used to like Nanoha a lot back when we were growing up. I always thought that one day, when I got my feet planted on the ground, I would ask her out. It seems like I am a bit to late though...seeing as she isn't quite the same person I fell in love with back then." I looked at Fate who had surprise written all over her face. "Oh don't give me that look, you were after Nanoha too. Admit it! I know all about those little escapades you tried to pull her to just so you could get closer." I smirked

"Hey that's a secret!" she playfully punched me in the arm. "Truth be told...I don't know what to do anymore." she looked down a little saddened. "I just cant keep holding on like this...I'll break apart if I keep going."

"Yet its still hard to let go isn't it?" I smiled dryly

"Yeah...I cant seem to talk to her the same way I used to. Shes just acting like shes got so much on her mind that it seems like I don't have a place there anymore."

"It's ok...you always have me right? Hahaha" I joked

She looked over at me silently

"W-what..?" I started, thinking I might have offended her.

"You know something..." she leaned in closer to me "why is it that things feel so natural when I am talking to you? I mean it should be natural anyway since we all grew up together but...somehow...this is different. Its more...relaxing"

"Yeah" I laughed a little "its almost like we really click together." I continued my joke "We do have the same problems in our lives it seems. Ha ha ha."

"Ne..." she leaned in closer, sorta making me feel a little uncomfortable "would you like to have lunch with me today?"

"Eh?" I asked confused

"We haven't had lunch together in a while and..." she looked down and blushed a little bit "I would like to talk to you some more."

"O...ok" I stammered after seeing her blushing. "H-here at lunch?" I offered

"I'd like that" she whispered softly before pushing herself off the railing and giving me a soft kiss on the cheek "Thanks for talking to me this morning Yuuno" she waved as she started walking back to the building. "See you at lunch"

Unknown to the two individuals a lone figure opened her eyes and looked up at the sky from her position on the roof of the doorway entrance overhang. Her lips grinning from ear to ear at the conversation. "Well, well..." the Commander of the Sixth Mobile Division sat up after Yuuno walked back inside. "This is getting interesting...I cant wait to see how this will all play out." She punched some buttons on a communicator that popped up "Rein" she called as the figure appeared on screen

"Yes, Mistress Hayate?"

"I want you to get the video cameras ready" she grinned even more "we have an interesting situation going on..."

This wasn't meant to be revealed for spoilers, but my recent outburst in the manga thread needs explanation. And so, I cross-post from OCT for maximum coverage and for those I've irritated with my outburst here...

In the beginning, there was the Saint King. Until canon affixed one, she had many names. Only her Unison Defensor had a constant name, and this one is the one mentioned whenever I bring up my OC based on Saber.

A man involved with much of the Kings during the Second Founding of Belka was a baron named Karl Einfeldt. As the protagonist of the epic set during Ancient Belka times, I gave him a K-name as it is my style. He had, amongst other things, "silver-white hair, and the eyes of the lake" as his description goes in my prose. He had one regret near the end of his life. Maybe even a tragic love story involving Olivie. And a clone of him carries his burden in the latest Ascension War of Belka (a concept existing in my fic alone).

Who does that sound like, and even had a K-name? Yes, Klaus Ingewald.

I hit jackpot big time, so pardon the anaphylactic shock. I'm just so happy that one of my OCs turned out to be a CC. So I'm dropping Karl for Klaus in my fanon. That's the meaning of my khrack attack.

I hope this clears it up...

Ahem...

Right then, some time ago (last week, I believe), I posted the third chapter to my MGLN/Pride And Prejudice crossover, "It Is A Truth Universally Acknowledged...". Tabasco has given me his feedback on it and, as such, I rewrote most of the chapter, cutting out about 1300 words in the process. Am I happier with the re-write? Yeah, definitely. It's not exactly as humorous as I originally intended, but it's still better than the original version. Besides, by cutting out those 1300+ words, I do have material for future chapters.

Without any further delay, I present to everyone a re-write of the third chapter of:

It Is A Truth Universally Acknowledged...

A MGLN/Pride & Prejudice crossover

Genre: Romance/humor
Pairings: Subaru/Teana, possible Hayate/Shamal, standard pairings in P&P
Timeline: A year after StrikerS
Pre-story scenario: Hayate and Shamal decide to pay ex-Admiral Graham a visit in England. Teana is currently taking a short break from her Enforcer training and, without anything to do, decides to tag along and learn about the planet that Hayate and Nanoha are from. As for Subaru, well, 'nuff said.


Chapter 1
Chapter 2

Shamal’s origins, along with the rest of the Wolkenritters’ own personal life stories, are currently unknown, even to the Knight of the Lake herself. To this date, nobody knows whether the Wolkenritter, sans Zafira, were originally humans prior to becoming a part of the Tome of the Night Sky, or if the Wolkenritter themselves existed as computer programs right from the very start, and the only person who would know is currently playing a nice casual game of chess with the Belkan equivalent of the Grim Reaper.

When the Wolkenritter were brought about into their current incarnation as a result of the then-named Book of Darkness activating Hayate Yagami’s Linker Core, Shamal was the one who made the easiest transition into behaving like a normal human being or, if one were to believe the words of the Blaze Commander, the Iron Knight, and the Guardian Beast, behaving too much like a human, if it was possible to call it by that phrase. The purple-eyed blonde would eventually share Hayate’s love for cosplaying, and did not seem to mind the brunette’s highly-physical fondness for, for the lack of a more polite term at the cost of being repetitive, the well-endowed female body.

As time goes by, however, things do change. Somewhere along the line, as Hayate grew up and blossomed into a stunningly beautiful woman, Shamal had started shifting away from being the brunette’s adoptive mother, and had become more of a close personal friend. However, as Hayate began to cut back on the bathroom groping sessions, the knight could not help but start noticing the brunette in yet another way. While Hayate tended to be pretty rough and enthusiastic at times, the groping was usually done in either a playful or curious manner, compared to the maliciousness that Shamal’s previous masters would display. Upon building a tolerance for the groping sessions, Shamal grew to appreciate her mistress’ playfulness, and welcomed it with open arms. As such, when the brunette eventually cut back on the girl-to-girl bonding sessions, the blonde could not help but feel there was something missing in her heart.

While Shamal was still unsure whether she was starting to see Hayate as a woman or if she simply missed the gropings, she had sworn to protect her mistress, be it on the battlefield or off it. That was the main thought that was going through the knight’s mind as Mr Bennet beckoned the quartet to follow him downstairs to the sitting room. However, upon entering the room, all cohesive thought was thrown out of the window as the head of the Bennet household attempted to prevent Hayate from sitting down.

The Knight of the Lake was definitely older than the one person who created Mr Bennet by at least centuries, but there was no doubt that someone was about to give early 19th-century England and its values a thorough 21st-century shakedown.

“Pardon me for asking, Mr Bennet,” Shamal spoke up, “but may I ask what you are doing to my friend?”

Mr Bennet was confused. “I am afraid, my lady, that I will have to answer your question with yet another question, but what business do you have calling a person of her stature your friend?”

If it were not for the fact that Hayate Yagami had taught the Wolkenritter the value of human life and how to be compassionate for a fellow human being, the Knight of the Lake would have been eager to show how Klarer Wind can be used to hurt and maim others despite a lack of true offensive capabilities. In the end, it was Shamal’s growing feelings for her mistress that won out – yes, she was, and still is, a healer, and she was genuinely regarded as the kindest of the Wolkenritter, but those factors did not play a part in her decision to avoid violence.

Hayate, the Knight thought out to the brunette, I’m sorry for what I am about to say. Please remember that you will always be my mistress to the very end, but I will need to play against Mr Bennet at his own game.

My dear Shamal, Hayate thought back, I have complete faith in you. I will confer with Teana and Subaru regarding any further actions while you deal with our host over here.

Thank you, my mistress… With that, the blonde looked back at the Bennet patriarch. “Tell me, then, Mr Bennet, what do you think of the present economic situation of England?”

“I’d say, my lady, that we are doing very well,” Mr Bennet replied with a pompous tone, “with the recent emergence of machinery that run on steam power, productivity in towns around the country have never been higher! But, I fail to see the connection between this, and why you would call her your friend.”

“Tell me, then, Mr Bennet, would you like to know how to further improve the country’s economy?” Seeing the man nod, Shamal suppressed a grin. “What would you think of me if I were to offer the idea of treating everybody, from the Africans to the Asians, equally as your fellow white man?”

“That’s preposterous,” Mr Bennet snapped, “such an idea would be absurd!”

“Why, that’s too bad, Mr Bennet,” Shamal smiled, “but I do believe that if you were to treat them as equals, they will feel obliged to start working to repay the favor. If they work after receiving the correct training, they can boost productivity, and will get paid in proportion to their output. If they get paid, they have the means to buy goods, which means someone will need to increase supply of said goods.”

Watching as the gears in Mr Bennet’s head started to click into place, Hayate had to refrain herself from smiling as she walked over to where Teana and Subaru were standing.

Hayate, Subaru sent a thought out to the brunette, what’s going on?

She’s trying to use psychology on Mr Bennet to get him to treat us properly, Hayate thought back, and I think it’s working.

I’m not sure if Mr Bennet would appreciate getting a lesson from Shamal.

Relax, Teana, knowing Shamal, as much as she would like to give him a proper lecture as to why discrimination is wrong on many levels, she knows that he would be insulted if she were to do so, and just jumped right into giving him the financial incentives, and what better way is there to tempt a person than money?

Looks like Mr Bennet has gotten the grasp of what Shamal has just said. Should we just activate our barrier jackets to give a bit of an impression?

“… I see, because increased demand will lead to an increase in supply, productivity increases, and the cycle repeats,” Mr Bennet mused, “I must ask myself why I have never thought of this myself.”

“With all due respect, Mr Bennet,” Hayate responded, causing the Bennet patriarch to turn around and see the brunette, Teana, and Subaru dressed smartly in what he perceived as smart-looking, if revealing, combat outfits, "it is about time that you need to reassess some of your views.”

“That is right,” Shamal stated, having activated her Knight armor, “Hayate, Subaru, and Teana are all very skilled at their professions, and are all highly respected for what they do, regardless of their age, gender, and race. The brunette you attempted to prevent from sitting down earlier, she saved me from an evil force far greater you can ever imagine, and has taught me how to live as a human.”

“I see.” Letting what had just transpired set in, the Bennet patriarch swallowed his pride and held out a hand to Hayate. “I apologize for my behavior towards you, and I hope I can make amends, Miss…”

“Colonel Hayate,” the brunette said as she shook Mr Bennet’s hand firmly. “I am a commanding officer in the army that I am in, and my three associates are not just my subordinates, but are also among my closest friends. I must also apologize for our sudden appearance here, and I can only say that it was completely accidental.”

“Indeed, Colonel Hayate,” Mr Bennet acknowledged, with a hint of a smile on his face, “there is the matter of explaining to Mrs Bennet about who you are.”

“You could say that we are temporary bodyguards.” Four pair of eyes turned to face Subaru. “We will not get in your way, just as long as you understand that we will be following our own values, most of which will be in contrast to what you have been taught.”

As Hayate and Shamal nodded thoughtfully at the combat cyborg’s suggestion, Teana sighed. “I suppose we do have no other choice… Mr Bennet, we will be bodyguards for your daughters. As my colleague, Private Subaru Nakajima, stated, we will not interfere with your lives, but we will not look too kindly if your associates attempt to look down on us.”

“Very well,” Mr Bennet sighed, “I will see what I can do. If you excuse me now, I will be going to my chambers now. I trust that you will be sleeping in this room for the night?”

“Yes, we will be sleeping in here,” Hayate confirmed, “and I pray that you have a good night’s rest.”

“I shall lock this door tonight so that you shall not be disturbed,” the Bennet patriarch said as he was about to leave, “and I shall wake early so that I can introduce you to Mrs Bennet and my daughters. I bid you all a good night.”

Later that night, Shamal was staring at the ceiling after several failed attempts to sleep. Looking over at Teana and Subaru, the blonde could not help chuckling to herself as she saw the two huddled together in their regular clothing.

So, Hayate suddenly thought out to the blonde, how are the two closeted lovebirds?

My goodness, Hayate! Shamal nearly sat up in fright. Don’t scare me like that!

Whoops, my bad! I’m sorry about that, Shamal!

The blonde could not help but chuckle. It’s alright, Hayate, just don’t do it again the next time. It wouldn’t be good if a medic died from an equivalent of a fright-induced heart attack. Both Teana and Subaru look cute while sleeping together.

Oh?

Yeah… I mean, I don’t think they have confessed to each other yet but, having known each other for so long, they probably do this from time to time.

Still, you’re right, they do look cute like that. There was a brief telepathic silence before Hayate thought out again. Hey, Shamal, what was it that you were about to say before we were interrupted earlier?

I… Shamal had to ponder her words. I’ve been thinking a lot about you recently, Hayate.

Hmmm?

I’ve been thinking about how you have changed me for the better, how you taught me to be human, especially about having a sense of compassion for a fellow human being. It’s just that… Silence reigned for a few more seconds. I’m sorry Hayate, but I just can’t tell you now.

I see. With that, the brunette got up from where she was sleeping, and carefully made her way towards Shamal before lying down next to her.

Hayate? What are you doing?

You look as though you have a bit of a problem sleeping, so I’m here to help you with that. Besides, as for what you wanted to tell me, I’ll wait until you are ready to speak.

Hayate…

Shifting her position a bit, Hayate kissed Shamal lightly on the cheek. Good night, Shamal. I feel safe just by having you around. May you have sweet dreams tonight, my Knight of the Lake.
