I think that Poppo might have changed, but far as I can tell only in positive ways. He seems more outgoing and confident than he was as a child (From what I can tell from flashbacks, he was Jintan's follower and relatively reserved). Poppo seems to be the only one from the group that's really matured in a healthy fashion.
I'm kind of curious about Poppo and the fact that he seems so undamaged. I always thought that all the living characters would contrast darkly with their childhood self in some way, that Menma would serve as the lone bastion of purity that anchors them all down. I guess I was wrong and that there's actually two out of the six that serve that role (Poppo and Menma), or maybe there's more to Poppo than meets the eye. I think the fact that he was hanging out at their secret base for some reason at the end of the first episode is relevant somehow. Maybe Poppo was secretly a bit sad about the group's break-up all these years, and continued visiting their secret base as his own way of clinging to the past, hoping all those years that another one of his friends would have that same desire to return to their secret base one day (Just like Jintan ended up doing at the climax of the first episode)? Or maybe he just thinks it's a nice secluded place to get drunk and look at porn, I dunno... Anyway, I like Poppo a lot, will be curious to see where his character goes. |

Poppo's enthusiasm is infectious. But I wonder sometimes if Menma was the reason he started traveling around the world. The secret base does make a good place to stay when you're not tied down, but it is interesting that he chooses to stay there rather than with one of his old friends. It's a relatively out of the way spot.

Poppo reminds me a lot of myself when I was younger. Not so much physically, but spiritually...well, kind of. I had a bad case of wanderlust in my youth (still do in fact), traveling America then the world. While I imagine that our reasons for traveling will be different, the same enthusiasm and joy Poppo has shown concerning his travels is the same joy I've often experienced.
That being said, Poppo's exuberance toward life is quite nice. Can't wait to find out more about our well traveled friend. |

I think Poppo lost his core group of friends when Menma died and he seemed to be really attached to Jintan. So him traveling as a way to cope is a good theory and using their old base keeps him close to what he once had. He was so happy to see Jintan and it appeared genuine. I can't wait to see more of his character. He made me smile every time he came on the scene even before we saw the mature version of him.

I kinda wonder about the last scene in episode 5. He seemed somewhat desperate, so I'm starting to wonder if it was related to issues that he'll need to sort out later on as well. I can't tell if it was just done that way to cause Menma to feel bad, or if it belies something within Poppo.

I think he's obviously bothered by the fact that he can't see or hear Menma himself. He's Menma's friend too, but yet she won't appear before him for him reason. It's like an existentialist who witnessed the tragedies of the Great Depression and World War II and prayed to God for peace, only for god to stay silent in their eyes.
In Poppo's eyes, his efforts aren't being rewarded. He's been actively trying to help, but even then Menma still won't appear before him. |

I was rewatching the second episode and then I looked carefully at this:
Spoiler for pic:
And I was like: "Woaaah, that seems to be around the state which I live in!" So I went to google and searched for a more detailed map and then I was like: "Holy shiiii, its exactly in the state I live in. Poppo´s been here!" Yeah, random. But I found it to be funny. :P |

Haha, that's pretty awesome. It doesn't look like Poppo's ever been to Tennessee, I'm jealous.
I wonder if anyone online has figured up all the places Poppo's visited based on the map. Would be an interesting list. |
