To Heart 2 (TV)

Dunno how it happened (must be on another channel), but the final episode is out a couple of days too early!

Yes! A non-ending! I know many of you would be disappointed in this one, as if To Heart 2 as a whole isn't a disappointment already.

Konomi's love angle is completely sidetracked! If you ask me, it looked so similar to To Heart (1999), where we know Akari is the main girl, even if she and Hiroyuki don't get to be lovers in the end. Here, Konomi still proved to be the main girl even if she and Takaaki don't get to be lovers in the end.

Think of it this way. At the very least, To Heart 2 is IMO better than ~Remember my Memories~, and still keeps things open for a second season... hopefully.

Why I think so? Because:
- Tama-nee's surprise announcement in ep. 11 wasn't even mentioned at all afterwards! It is destined to be a useless plot hole if they don't follow this up, plus the "Legions of Tama-nee fans" will cry out in outrage.
- Young Yuuki Kusakabe appeared! (I was half-hoping Sasara to appear as a cameo too)
- To Heart and Comic Party did have second seasons of their own.

An anti-climatic ending to a dissapointing series...

The only redeeming part of the final episode is Yuuki's cameo (and Komaki getting angry ^^), and even that was badly done. Even if it was for fanservice, throwing in a girl that was never introduced yet in the final episode breaks the whole pacing of the story. People who have not played the game are scratching their heads wondering who the mystery girl is.

What makes it even worse is that the most important part of that scene was what Takaki said at the end. There's absolutely no point if they cut that out~!

Am I the only one who enjoyed seeing all the girls in here? Minus 1 (Ms. HMX) and plus 1 (Yuuki) oh come on, you guys weren't expecting something else, did you? Well, I'll admit I was expecting more Konomi, but who would've thought episode 12 we got a heck of alot of her, but in episode 13, she pretty much got what, 3 4 minutes of screentime....

Ok, even the scene of last episodes end was at a different view. I like that. But yeah, this episode screams OAV or season 2, any's fine as long as.....ok, I got some laugh out loud cheers and some real bad gripes of this episode, so here we go.

Cheers: Different view of previous episode. GSD could've used alot of this
Cheers: Seeing Manaka and Yuma, the good, the bad, the calm, the hot head, the finger pointer, the worry-er, the long skirt, the short skirt, the voice of angels, the voice of thunder , the....hey wait I'm going way too far lol, great to see these two completely different girls just as cute as ever.
Gripe: Takaki eating proccessed food. Ok, seriously, I'm having gripes about that because the last thing I want to see is someone else doing what I have to do (me, thats right, busy as....an interent search engine ) eating too much ready made food is not really good for you all, so do remember that
Gripe: either the flashback of Yuuki was very bad timing, or this episode prepares us for a season 2. I'll take the latter, but today the former has the upper hand...
Cheers: Manaka trying her best to take control of the class. Seriously, I'm very good at taking over our channel's distro for L-R, but it was very nice to see her do her best, in a cute, non commanding way I mean, I cannot visualize this girl with an angry voice.

Gripe: Takaki opening Konomi's shoe slot. Seriously man, if your going to open a girls space like that at least remember that's only best for dropping off a love letter
Biggest cheer of all: Park scene with Takaki and Tama-nee. MY GOSH WHAT WAS THIS, VERY ODD THAT I'VE SEEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS, I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER A ANIME LIKE THIS, BUT SO MANY NOSEBLEEDFUL CLOSEUPS OF TAMA-NEE'S LOWER BODY, FIRST WE GET A GREAT, 1/4 OF THE SCREEN VEIW OF TAMA-NEE STOCKING, THEN WE GET A CLOSEUP OF HER GLORIEST PART OF HER BODY, THEN A CLOSEUP OF THAT BACK THERE, THEN....*slap* aww, for once, I want her to slap me too, just please boku no Tama-nee
Gripe: Takaki ruining the moment by slipping and sliding down his....I mean, come on man run after, grab her hand, say "Konomi daisuki!!!!" then I can have Tama-nee Bad Takaki, you have no backbone....for a young girl like Konomi...
Biggest gripe of all: Not a single tear or crying moment from Konomi. It was almost as if Takaki hadn't done anything at all. And if he hadn't done anything at all, what was the purpose of these two being apart for so long of the episode. I wanted to at least hear a very, very emotional reaction from Konomi after seeing Takaki.
Gripe: Usual ending credits. This definately smells like more, and to me, that's somewhat of a good smell. So, who digs the cute legs in there?

You'll notice most of my cheers were in the first half of the ep, most gripes were in the end. You could say, that is my reaction to the whole series. So, Ms. HMX didn't even get any screentime other than that one ep of hers, and we got someone who was first shown in the last ep of a series. Odd placement of timing if you ask me...but then again, if there is more To Heart2, then it will redeem all my gripes I've ever had of this series, To Heart2.

I think the majority of gripes will come from Tamaki, Konomi, and Yuuki fans ^^;

Tamaki fans will probably curse the studio for leaving the huge plothole in episode 11. What in the world happened at the tea ceremony? We all expected some sort of continuation, but were slapped with a recap episode... >.<

Konomi fans have it the hardest. One of my favorite scenes from the game was her end scene at the riverbank. It was extremely heartwarming and well scripted, but in the anime, it was butchered to a laughable, arguably most anti-climactic ending in the genre.

Yuuki fans cry from the fact that she never appeared in her adult form (see avatar, absolutely moe~!). If they don't plan to give her an episode, then they should just have left her out of the anime series. No one likes half cooked fanservice. What irks me the most is that the first half of her scenario can easily fit 20 minutes since it's shorter and more condensed.

*Sigh* ... Maybe I shouldn't have left my expectations so high for To Heart 2.

Well, If they plan to have a second season, they can't use Konomi's scenario anymore. Go Tama-nee~~

Uhm, actually, that must be a naming issue that's been around with To Heart2 lately. That 14 must be 13 if you count the compilation special as an episode. After all, TV guides had To Heart2 listed as 13 episodes so unless the TV guides were very not up to date as I was, then yay

Apologies for the confusion, but yup that's the same one I regarded as episode 13 in my previous post. I didn't count the compilation special.

Has any of the producers of the anime said what the purpose of the compilation episode was?

It seemed strange to make a "compilation episode" for such a short series. I'm wondering why they would air it two episodes from the end of the show when there didn't seem to be any reason at all to have a recap.

It's almost like they made it so they can sell seven R2 DVDs with two episodes on each DVD. If they were going to do that, I would rather they have a separate continuity Yuki episode similar to the Kakyuusei bonus 14th episode Tina side story instead.

It had some interesting dialogues between Tama-nee and Konomi as they review the events which happened, so fair enough for me. Though I admit my hopes for an Ikuno episode were a little too high (despite no one said there will be one), thus I was rathered disappointed when I thought they were wasting one episode for a special flashback episode. Hmm so now should I be crossing my fingers and hoping that they are reserving Ikuno for Season 2... if there's going to be one?

Well, putting all that aside, I'd like to make note once again of the Colorful Note manga. I'm seeing much more than the anime has offered, and what of it, these are two different projects so yeah,....

Anyways, there's much more interaction between Konomi and Tama-nee with Takaki, and the manga is actually quite funny. I'm enjoying it, and I continually look forward for the latest published chapter.

Err, must add, Chapters 9 and 10 have been released. datorrents. Yahoo and Google are your friends.... .....

There's a huge difference between the ending of To Heart and To Heart 2. The key is the relationship between the protagonists. In the original series, there was a heavy emphasis on the relationship between Akari and Hiroyuki - and you could really see their bond become stronger as the series progressed. The ending scene did a great job in settling matters, as the two promised to be by each other's side - which is what Akari was really looking for. A "love declaration" was not needed here, because that was never the real issue - nor was it Akari's wish.

In the second series, Konomi never gets sufficient screen time nor the focus; there is no real development in the relationship between her and Takaki. And without the buildup, the ending comes across as being rather flat.

This is just my personal opinion, but the anime might have had more potential if more of the focus was on Tama-nee. It would've been more entertaining to watch; that's for certain.

That could be true. Tamaki's story does have more interesting scenarios, but I doubt was the main problem. TH2's production was originally flawed from the beginning since it was basically an advertisment to popularize the release of ToHeart 2 Xrated. Likely, there was no intention on part of the production to actually make it a hit series like the game itself which they could have done~

*sigh...* If only I could wish for an OVA...

On another topic, Is it me or has Konomi's VA, Ochiai Yurika, underwent some kind of helium treatment in the anime series? Her voice sounded soooo much better in game (less squeaky, 110% more moe~)

In Ep 9 during the double-date between Takaaki, Yuuji, and the twins, when Ruri ends up riding piggyback on Takaaki's back, Yuuji asks her a question and gets a really off-the-wall response from her, sounds almost like a car's engine starting (kinda like "Karerererere!!"). Is it a particular remark in Japanese slang or just plain gibberish that I shouldn't concern myself too much about (other than the fact that it just sounds funny)?

Haven't spent too much time in this thread since the subs are only up to episode #5 and I'm trying to dodge spoilers. But, after watching episode #5, I've got a observation and a question. In the preview for the next episode, we can hear Lucy doing her "Ruu ruu" routine. I don't know if it was done intentionally, but the cadence she is using is - to my ears anyway - clearly morse code for the letters D-D-O (or whatever the Japanese equivalent of those codes might be). Anyone know anything about this, or if D-D-O has any significance?

"Ruu" is the signature phrase for Ruuko (Lucy). In a way it's similar to Ayu's (Kanon) "ughuu" or Kamio Misuzu's (AIR) "Gao".

There's much more meaning behind "Ruu", but bigger spoilers are inevitable~ ^^

Somehow that just doesn't sound like a dog's growl at all (recall my comment earlier saying it sounded like a car's starter motor), since I've heard other anime characters go "grrr" the English onomatopea way even in Japanese. Unless there are dogs in Japan that growl or bark like that

I finally got to see the final episode, and I for one am not disappointed at all. It was one of the highlights of an enjoyable series, as far as I'm concerned.

I wasn't really a partisan of any particular girl, and what looks to me like a pure Konomi ending was very satisfying. I remember saying after the first episode that Konomi was probably the most kawaii imouto figure ever. I don't know about that, but she was wonderful. Ochiai Yurika did such a terrific job of evoking her: she got a chance because of her work as Keiko in Uta~Kata, and she made the most of it.

I haven't played the game, so I had no preconceived notions and nothing I desperately wanted to see kept in. Under those circumstances, I can't understand how someone can say that Konomi fans could be disappointed, except maybe that there was a bit too little of her. However, it was definitely good to see everyone else, as well. In the end, I can't rank this series higher than just "fun," but the girls were great, and Konomi was wonderful.
