My guess is that the AO wanted to add her some humilliation before her comrades by turning her form rather ugly. In the anime doesn't happen likely because the AO wants to make her look defenseless and helpless before her comrades.

Well spotted! You're wrong about what happened in the manga, but if you want to know the original purpose of that scene you can find it in volume 10, chapter 53. I can't tell you any more since spoilers are not allowed in this thread.
