Perhaps someone made an hilarious and colossal screw up when originally translating japanese to english and vice versa and we've been mistaken for years. Or it's the most epic troll in the history of the planet!

The issue is exactly same in Japanese actually

超大型巨人 is literally 超大型 (extremely huge) 巨人 (giant)

the redundancy is there to begin with.
