nail a few sticks in the ground, put some wire or equivalent around it, and you have a perfectly valid reason to expect your car to not be tampered with, at least by the courts logic

Nothing really mindblowing, because said party doesn't have enough seats to rule alone and needs at least two other parties to rule with it, meaning that whatever Wilders wants, isn't necessarily what he gets.

Also, he does have a point, the only problem is that he pisses off both the moderate Muslims and the extremists with him calling all Muslims the 'bad guys'. And that doesn't settle well with the biggest losing party, who are Christian-oriented and are thus easier to offend than most of the other parties.

Wilders already softened his party's agenda on several points, so it's not like they can't work with him at all, it's just that they don't want to, out of pure fear that he'll stick true to his word (which he can't, because he'd still need the other parties to vote for whatever he wants).

Right now, the people in charge of making this Parliament happen keep sending us on a wild goose chase, and I wouldn't be surprised if the version that eventually becomes the new Parliament will have Wilders out of the picture altogether, and you can be assured that this won't settle well with thosle who voted for Wilders' party (roughly 1.5 million people iirc).

This is not 1930's Germany, where one man gained absolute power and subsequently murdered about 6 million people over the next decade, yet I've spoken to a lot of people who actually fear just that.

Hold off on booze, NASA urges trapped Chile miners

Quote:
(Reuters) - Already deprived of sunlight, fresh air and their loved ones for 26 days, NASA doctors say 33 miners trapped deep in a Chilean mine must continue to forego two other pleasures: alcohol and cigarettes.

Facing a wait of around two to four months as rescuers race to drill a narrow shaft 2,300 feet vertically down to extract them, the miners are in good spirits, and included wine on a wish-list of items to be sent down a tiny borehole from the surface.

Health officials have sent them high-protein, high-calorie foods in narrow plastic tubes to help them build up their strength after losing an estimated 22 lb (10 kg) each during 17 days entombed after a cave-in before they were found alive.

Booze will have to wait.

"From the alcohol standpoint, we need to first get their nutrition up before we make any considerations there," said James Michael Duncan, NASA's deputy chief doctor, who flew with a team of medical experts to Chile to help advise the government on one of the world's most challenging rescue bids.

Some of the men have also asked for cigarettes, and health officials have sent them nicotine patches and gum.

"It's an environment that's pretty enclosed and we don't want to contribute to any of the problems within the atmosphere of the mine," Duncan added.

Used to managing prolonged periods in confined areas on space missions, NASA is also advising the government on how to keep the men mentally fit for the weeks ahead.

Health Minister Jaime Manalich says the men are holding up remarkably well in the hot, humid tunnel. But they face a long haul.

Rescuers began drilling the escape shaft on Monday night, and by early Tuesday evening, had bored down 26 feet -- around 1 percent of the target depth.

MINE OWNERS TESTIFY

Dramatic video footage taken by the men last week with a camera sent down the grapefruit-sized borehole serving as their lifeline to the outside world, showed them bearded, their torsos bare to cope with the heat. Some were visibly thin.

The men have designated areas for sleep and card games while freeing space to keep items like toothpaste and deodorant. The men have also asked for laxatives to help regulate their digestive systems after initially surviving on two mouthfuls of canned tuna and half a glass of milk every 48 hours until supplies ran out.

Rescuers have sent them miniature projectors so they can watch video clips of soccer greats Pele and Maradona, and have also sent cards, dominoes and letters from their family members.

The owners of the San Jose mine testified before an investigatory commission of lawmakers on Tuesday, defending their company against accusations they had skimped on safety.

President Sebastian Pinera has vowed to punish any lapses, has fired officials of Chile's mining regulator and has pledged a major overhaul of the agency and safety regulations in light of the accident.
Which idiot thought of sending them booze and cigarettes into that place? Has that guy ever heard of spontaneous combustion in air or digestive problems?

Kind if interesting to see NASA finally having a real job to do after all these years of American political bureaucracy. It is a total waste of their expertise to discover and explore things that the modern US youth cannot be bothered with.

Silicon Oxide Circuits Break Barrier: Nanocrystal Conductors Could Lead to

Sounds promising. I would like to know how the long term stability of the new memory design is. If it can also solve one of the more annoying, known problems of solid state memory (low rewrite lifetime ~ only 10,000 - 100,000 times to be rewritten before it is broken), this would allow for much larger (data storage) and ultra fast hard drives that also have an additional benefit: there are no moving/mechanical parts that tend to be very shock sensitive.

There are many promising areas of research in the computer field:

http://www.spacemart.com/reports/Mov...onics_999.html

http://www.spacemart.com/reports/Pen...aster_999.html

http://spectrum.ieee.org/semiconduct...echange-memory

It's hard to predict which areas of research will pan out and which won't.

I am not too optimistic about this technology in the near future. We had such research at my university and the big problem I see with this technique is that you need meta stable crystals. This meta stable material is today only possible when creating extreme environmental conditions (like extreme pressure or cooling). Therefore this does not sound too promising when applied in miniaturized non-laboratory equipement. Its basically a cool idea, since one can read a holograhpic crystal using all sorts of different wavelengths which would allow to reuse the same data position in the crystal multiple times. That makes it basically like a multilayer optical data disk (e.g. blue ray) but in 3D, so instead of an area of for example 1024x1024 bits you have a space of 1024x1024x1024 bits available (if we consider the medium size such a way that along its length 1024 bits can be transscribed). But as I said before, it is hard (today) to bring such crystals into a state where it can be read and written (meta stable). If there only was a meta stable optical material that worked under normal conditions and is highly rewritable and translucent.

Rescue efforts under way after explosion in Gulf

An oil production platform has exploded 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, with 12 people overboard and one missing, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning.

Rescue attempts are under way for at least 12 people, Coast Guard spokesman John Edwards told CNN. 13 people were on board the production platform total, Edwards said, noting 12 have been accounted for, but one person was missing.

The accident took place 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana on the Vermilion Oil production platform 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy.

Guess we're not quite to the conspiracy part yet. The good thing is since the previous fiasco is still fresh in people's minds, the cleanup for this one should go a lot smoother.

Because he was angry at the Discovery channel for not show casing programming that encouraged human extinction by convincing people not to breed.

You know there ARE industrial accidents on oil rigs? Right? Most of them don't turn into the cluster fuck like that one rig. There's also a very specific reason why Deep water Horizon was so hard to deal with. It was five thousand feet below water, a depth that didn't actually have established containment measures/plans to deal with (which IS a massive cluster fuck). BP bassically had to write the book on the spot for dealing with a leak that deep.

From what I've read, this rig only has a depth of 300-400 feet.

That's why it's still just a 'coincidence'

BP and every other oil company actually had a plan and handbook to deal with crap like that, However it was all wrong. And the handbook also has a list of specialize to call in the event of something going wrong. Unfortunately several of the people on that list are dead.

It isn't that they didn't have a plan it is BP and the other oil company over estimated themselves and their ability to deal with this kind of crap.

So they had an emergency plan that was so old that a good number of people it relied on were dead...

I'm impressed.
