Spanish Basketball Team in hot water... An insult to the Chinese?
Apparently, a recent photo by the Spanish Basketball Team has come to light "insulting" the Chinese.

The ad reached its goal, now it's everywhere.
I think the pose was highlighting the Olympics in China, but of course no one in these days would think of anything before putting in front racism, hate, or discrimination. Of course, now there are some who are even suggesting this should be used against Spain for its Olympic bid. That makes the attacks understandable. China may use this to discourage Spanish athletes, so that they can win a few more golds to help them reach their goal for this event. |

Somehow I think the overseas Chinese/Asian communities are more akin to take offense than the people in China, where the gesture's significance is not likely to be well-understood. But that raises a point in and of itself - what did the team actually intend when they decided to use this gesture? Was it just an affectionate wink at the sponsors, as they claim? Or was it something meant for a more domestic audience, who would've "gotten" the insult even as the Chinese sponsors missed it?
I can't judge which it is, though the Spanish paper is insinuating that the British and American medias are out to smear its bid for the 2016 Olympics. *shrug* |

I... really don't think they were being particularly offensive. I think it's just the typical US "political correctness" that unfortunately seems to clog at any kind of friendly joke possible.
I wonder what would everyone think if a manga/anime like Hetalia were to be licensed in the US.

I doubt they intended to offend the host country of the Olympics they are attending. They just don't see it as offensive. Kind of like the "Mr. Darkie" stuff from China that some people made a fuss over. They just don't know better.

And the guy in the photo is not giving a middle finger to the Chinese. This is like saying the Dave Chapelle show is offensive to black people.
