I have to admit sousuke looks cool, whilst at the same time good-looking and with a aura of working hard, but Hayashimizu just always manipulates and looks like a boss-figure (lol, every anime has one of these :P)

Usually the main protagonist of any story is the character focused on most, therefore the viewer/reader feels the most sympathetic/understanding towards that character, and they are usually the most attractive as well. Obviously Sousuke. Mardukas comes second...lmfao just playing.

Well....I think it's because he's cute, a genius, an idiot, a comic relief, and can kick ass all at the same time.
And yes, the protection thing is romantic.

IMO, Souske is popular because most girls think hes hot, his intelligance of being civilian is clueless and comical, his voice appeals sexy to some, and his intentions are good. As for the protection thing, I agree and disagree. Most girls like men protecting them, but if a man tried to protect me, I'd be pissed off no matter who it was
