Yep, OGM is pretty dead since it was just a unoffical hack of the ogg container. It's outdated and unsupported.
Now, it's MKV if you want maximum flexibility, or OGV (new official file extension for ogg container with video inside) if you want to only use the codecs endorsed by xiph.org (Vorbis, Flac, Theora...) |

OGM also known as "ogg media" was a hack on the ogg format to support video streams. It was one of the first formats to support multiple audio tracks and soft subtitle tracks. It used to be quite popular among dvd ripping groups because the only other 'real' container at the time (AVI) did not support multiple audio tracks or soft subtitles without some serious hackery.
It gained traction to a point where any respectable fansubber (and many viewers) knew about the format. This can be compared to the mkv container that is prevalent nowadays. However before it could catch on completely; the matroska format was released and OGM's sole developer (gabest, known for development of such utilities as MPC and vsfilter) vanished off the face of the earth. Since then, mkv has picked up where ogm left off and we have never looked back. |

Wasn't OGM created and developed by someone named Tobias ? He and Gabest both somewhat "disappeared", but I don't beleive they're the same person...

OGM never ruled. It was a stepping stone at best.
It also died quite quickly. OGM wasn't developed by Gabest. It was Tobias. He lost interest and the project went to Xiph (the makers of Ogg), but they don't care much about it because it was a simple "hack" of Ogg. So the format halted completely in any form of development, which it didn't have much of even when Tobias was working on it. Likewise it has no specifications/standards/anything about what it should do or where it should be going. Just shoving VfW into Ogg basically. The format was a hackjob made up of the stuff of dreams, thus it died . Gabest of course made the software to actually play OGMs, but he stopped committing to his svn loooooong after the format was already dead. He's still around, just not coding. It wasn't the disappearance of Gabest or even Tobias stopping work that did the format in, it was the rise of a format that was infinitely more useful, with plenty of forethought gone into the specs, and also had a decent set of tools. OGM never stood a chance. Last edited by Nicholi; 2007-09-12 at 04:16. |

There is "dead" and "dead". Of course, since a lot of open source software can easily play OGM, we will always be able to play them in the future. But it is now somehow a legacy format : you can read old file, but you don't create new files, or at least you shouldn't.
That what we mean here by "dead format". |
