It depends on many factors, how long a disc remain usable.
Just store it in a decent place with low humidity, no sunlight and in a constant room temperature. Also it is better to use disc manufactured by Yuden or MCC, you can get them branded as Plextor, Verbatim and other brands, just check before you buy them. And if possible store the discs in DVD/CD cases and not in those bag things, sleeves aso. With HDD you can also lose your data, like from a head/plate crash or if you place a strong magnet on it. Basically your files cannot be safe forever ^^ Just check your disc after few years and make a new copy of it, if the quality has dropped (use tools such as cdspeed). I bought an external harddisk to store my Anime & DV tapes.
In the past I used to burn them on DVD (& CDs), but after a few year, stored in a dark & dry place, some became unreadeable. My Narutaru & .Hack//Sign were lost that way. Now I've a Western Digital external 320GB HD. I copied everything on it. I do use the DVDs for watching them now. If it's broken, I can burn a replacement in no time. Anime is kept the way it was, .mkv or .avi The video I captured from my DV tapes is stored as H264 videos. It's big, but they'll be used for making movie DVDs anyway. And unfortunately, even a hard disk will not keep data forever. Nor do tapes do it. A DAT tape lasts like 30 years. At the end, it will all be in vain... once you're dead, your children or grand-children will just trow it away with trash together with your manga library you cherished so much T_T |

This is a bit off topic, but I was curious to the shelf life of professionally burned DVDs and CDs. Please tell me that they last longer than 5-10 years. They have to last longer than that because I have old CD's from the early 90'd that still play fine. I just want to know that in 20 years my 400+ official anime DVD collection will still play, along with my PS, PS2, and other video game discs. Does anyone know the shelf life? Thanks.

King the only thing you have to worry about is storing those DVD's Outve light and Humid places.
The DVD-R are more prone to decay. Some say you should reburn a copy of the DVD-r's every 10 years or so. Though its all a rough estimate, since we dont know when the data might go. Your PS1 and PS2 disks are not as prone to it as the DVD Gaming disks. As long as you remember Light and Humdity are its worst enemies.
