I loved the old Birdy OAV and this one is well on track to be as good or better. Especially with an awesome Gomez! (one of the best badasses in anime) The animation is terrific and Senkawa is an interesting variation on the typical "average kid way out of his league" type that is way too common in anime, and of course, Birdy rocks...

The manga uses two terms to describe Birdy's alien species, aruta-jin or arutekusu. The former would be Altarian (the word they use in the show and how I translated it) and the other one would be Altic (I assume Tadashi/wyvern used this one, I haven't seen their work). You only hear Aruta-jin in the first ep although you may hear arutekusu later into the series. I went with Altarian simply because the characters refer to them as Aruta-jin. Probably would've went Altic (although I would've spelled it as Altec) if they had said it. There's another term they use in the episode, Ikushiora aruta-jin (I translated it as Ixciora Altarian), as well. It simply means an Altarian that looks human on the outside but has enormous physical prowess and abilities such as Birdy. There's another type of Altarian in the manga but I'm not sure if they'll bring it up in the TV series. |

Tute (my spelling since it's spelled the same as Lute in JP) is a robot called a Marker and Birdy's partner. The old woman is also an Altarian. As I recall, the hair coloration is a mark of species or something similar to that but I think Birdy's hair is a bit unique at any rate.

Opening ep was class all the way. Visuals stunning - very Noein-y. Terrific ED. Fine voice work. Not sure why Birdy's assistant is a gay octopus and the plot is still a cipher at this point, but a cut above most of the other premieres this summer.
