What does Gaara's name mean?

What does Gaara's name literally translate into? After watching ep77 I became more curious what his name meant.

Does it mean to love yourself? Gaara seems to always think he can only love himself and everyone tells him that he should only love himself.

Japanese dictionaries are our friends

seriously people I've found Hinata (sunshine), Uzumaki (whirlpool), and Uchiha (round fan - the design on his back) in mine

as for gaara, I couldn't find the actuall word but here's what I came up with

ga - self
ara - shortcoming, weakness

so therefore. . .
ga+ara = my shortcoming or my weakness'

In other words gaara's name basically means mommy's little disappointment
awww! isn't that cute

You're probably right on the ga part ( 我 ), but ara is a compound of 愛 (ai = love) and some ather kanji that I couldn't find.

really. . . I couldn't find a kanji spelling of his name (not that I looked hard), but knowing it would be very helpful in getting an accurate translation.

so self+love+?
well from what everyone else is saying the 3rd kanji is probably something that means deamon. If you actually found a kanji spelling of gaara could you please tell me where? I'd like to take a look at it too. Oh and can somebody tell me where I can get that Japanese font that I see people using on this forum. How'd you get that kanji in your post???

thanks for all the replies.
doesn't gaara's name appear in hirigana (sp?) in the ep77 title so isnt that sufficient?

I'd like a kanji spelling myself, I'm just going off of what I've heard. That it consists of three kanji and the middle one is love. You should already have Japanese font on your comp, you just have to fiddle around with the language settings.

And Saitou00, hiragana tells us nothing but the pronounciation. As long as it's a name, it can only give us a clue as to what it means. Especially when it's a three kanji name which is pretty unusual.

I understand the Chinese meaning of the last kanji, "row." I think in the Chinese publication it was said to be the shortened version of "sho-row" which pretty much means devil, hell, or someone like Akuma (heh). And Garaa does think of himself as a demon, it would make sense...but I'm not certain since the character could have different meaning in Japanese.

The 3rd word "Ra"= 羅, stands for "Ashura" = 阿修羅.

Definititon of Ashura can be found here in this website. (Search for the word "Ashura/Asura")

So basically "Demonic Self Love"? That sounds like the worst hentai anime ever.

If you alter the structure a bit it leads to "A Demon That Only Loves Himself"
I Hate saying it but: I've Told You So
(the manga helped out a lot here)
