major s4 has them too, bleach, naruto etc. Macross Frontier was supposed to (marked on TBS site) but didn't extract anything last week. Will look again this week. Toshokan Sensou is supposed to but can't check right now. all I can think of off the top of my head.

Not that anyone here cares of course, we're not cheaters.

Edit; also cce is for American ccs which are totally different. It won't work for Japanese streams.

Personally, I love the CC tracks myself, makes watching anime raw for me a LOT easier.

Been watching gundam 00 (which I recorded to my TV all the episodes but just now started watching) and the CC are pretty indispensible for me to get a decent comprehension of what's going on in 1 pass (there's so much jargon in Gundam, I just read the kanji for the meaning and things are so much clearer).

If I watch anime on TV here in tokyo I always prefer shows with CC.

P.S. Yes Pretty Cure 5 Go Go! and Shugo Chara! also have CC.

DVDs do not contain captions, but subtitles. You need to rip those first with something like VSRip, and then OCR with SubRip if you want them in some more "manipulable" form.

Actually it goes both ways. For example, my DVDs of Slings & Arrows don't have DVD subs but they DO have closed captions. Japanese discs are infamous for not having subtitles, but some do have CC's.

My mistake... but in case of captions on DVDs, wouldn't you call it subtitles anyway? I mean, isn't it again just a bitmap overlay, or is a completely different format of storing the data?

DVDs (at least in NA) encode the captioning into the MPEG-2 stream. Only the player enabled subtitles are stored as a bitmap overlay stream.

So this Caption Capture program, how do you use it?

I assume you don't just simply take a raw found on a torrent on TokyoToshokan and just extract closed captions from the video file.

Is Caption Capture possible only if you have a guy in Japan that extracts the raw?
Can a guy in the United States like me just simply use Share or Winny to extract the captions?

You can sometimes find MPEG transport streams on Share or Winny, these may or may not contain closed captions, if they do you can extract them. Do note that these transport streams are usually 1080i, around 2.5-3 GB per episode and considerably more interesting to work with than normal AVI raws.

I'm curious about this DVDs with CCs concept. If you load the DVD up with a standard DVD player, would they be selectable as a subtitle stream?

20 Mb/s = 2.5 MiB/s

my portable hdd easily reach 10 MiB/s

*I'm 99% sure it's 20 Mbit/s since 20 MiB/s means 36 GiB per 30 mins episodes o_O

Macross turned out to have CCs this week btw, guess last week was borked. Golgo 13 doesn't. Toshokan Sensou does. BONES thingy with the girl in the red dress (hurr) does. Funnily enough the uncut version of Soul Eater *doesn't* even though the primetime version does.

Late night shows tend to not have CCs.

Morning and (after)noon shows usually have CCs, since they're considered children shows.
Also, TBS and NHK are usually the stations that don't skimp on CCs.

Who makes the CCs, by the way? The anime studio or the TV station?

Obviously someone has to provide a script ahead of airing if they have closed captions, so perhaps the reason that some shows are listed being with CC but end up without them is that the show wasn't sent early enough to make them. Considering the extremely close schedules for most anime, I'm not surprised that most late night anime doesn't have them.

They probably would have to pay extra to the TV stations to make them, too.
