I think not.... It's them that wants to stay behind. My concern was, at hope they insisted more that everyone should leave and no one will be left behind.

This your classical suspense horror... a lot of heroism and at the same time idiot-ism...

That was an incredibly intense episode. So much tension and suspense. My eyes were glued to the screen.

Yakomaru's secret weapon finally appears in front of the main characters. Well, almost. I'm curious to find out how they're going to get rid of him. Humans are powerless and I doubt the cats will be enough to take care of him.

This show should be in the horror category, if it already isn't Very good episode, especially the cliffhanger.

I was thinking while watching this is some of the best horror I've seen from anime in awhile. Too much horror is way too over the top which makes it comical. This was just right. I know when I am pausing the episode every few minutes because my nerves are on end the series has done something right.

I can't believe I have to wait another week for the next episode!

Some thoughts I do agree not saying what was killing them doesn't really work in visuals the way it works in text. I would have revealed what was killing them sooner, but that's a small nitpick in this otherwise excellent episode.

Also loved the simplicity of this scene

Spoiler for Episode image:

On another note I know the series has said that they are in love with the deceased Maria & the deceased Shun, but chemistry wise Saki & Satoru have always been my favorite pair in this series (well ever since they were kids alone in queer rat territory). It doesn't have to be "in love" but the deep friendship & bond they share is just beautiful to me. If you think about it pretty much every major crises Saki & Satoru have been together: Alone with the queer rats, they both lost Shun, they searched & lose Maria & Mamoru and now they are together against the fiend.

I just really hope they won't be separated in the end because I think that would break my heart. I was sad when they lost Shun, Maria, and Mamoru but I realize I wasn't as connected to those relationships as I have become connected to the Satoru/Saki one and I want to believe that the two hand connecting at the end of Wareta Ringo are their hands.

Yes, I agree. Saki-Satoru relationship works way better than the either of those two mentioned. Their chemistry is good. They have been through thick thin together since that summer camp when they were kids. This is the reason why I couldn't see where Saki's reaction to Shun's death was coming from. I mean, they hadn't even been together as much as Satoru and her or hell even Maria and her. Maria's departure and eventual death is pretty meh. If only, the studio hadn't been shoving that MariaXSaki in the viewers faces it would been good. Now, it just makes Maria's character look bad and one dimensional. As much as I love yuri parings in anime, I don't want them taking over a show which isn't about them.

Presumably, at this point, there's a 99% chance this "karmic demon" will be related to Maria (and my mind goes in all sorts of directions when thinking of the possible reasons as to why rat-boy would have her child; none of them particularly pleasant).

Since we know Saki, at least, somehow survives this ordeal since she's narrating the whole thing, it's good to know she'll have time to self-reflect on how she inadvertently caused so much death.

Then again, Saki did insinuate it was Maria's fault way back in the beginning of this series, which doesn't sound like the statements of someone who's done much self-reflecting, so perhaps narrator Saki-much like she and Satoru were in this episode-is blind to what seems rather obvious.

As for killing a human with your Cantus, I would assume it's still possible, as long as you're willing to give up your life in return, a realization I'm sure will occur far later than it should. In keeping with the pretty prose of the story so far, I wouldn't be surprised if Satoru eventually makes this sacrifice, and only then does Saki finally realize she's just lost "the one".

I have to concur with what a lot of people here are saying about the extremely effective horror and suspense of this episode. I particularly liked the one-shot characters for this episode. The cautious but cowardly guy, the courageous but reckless guy, the guy who said "All of us must split up if either of us is to have a chance at all!", the girl who was totally dedicated to the surviving members of her group and later acted as heroically as Saki and Satoru did... All of them really played their parts well, and believably.

With this episode, SSY is an early favorite for Horror Anime of 2013 for me.

Why do you think Saki should be held responsible for all of this death?

If this Karmic Demon is the biological offspring of Maria as I think we all suspect, then he ultimately arose due to Maria's decisions - Either Maria's decision to run away from the village, or Maria's decision to have children (it's possible that Maria was forced to give birth to him, of course).

Saki never forced Maria to run away. Quite the contrary - Saki hated the idea of Maria running away, and tried to locate her even after she received Maria's letter.

That's a very disturbing thought - the one in the bracket of course. I do not want that revelation.

Gahhh!!! The cliffhanger is killin' me! Okabe or Doraemon, lend me your time-machines!

Btw, it's another solid episode. This is storytelling at its finest. Just like everyone else said, my eyes are glued to the screen, mind got absorbed in the story, and chills are sent through my spine. Superb!

Well, we know how manupulative mole Kyubey (Yakomaru is). Most likely the pair runs off, has a child, and are happy parents, until they die by someone's arrangements, leaving an easily impressionable child to be raised... Shit. It would be easy to say something like that humans are terrible, prejudiced creatures that exiled this child's parents, caused them to be in this shitty situation, and deserve to be killed.

A joyful lover's reunion turned into the prelude for genocide. Sounds like the highest level of douchebaggery to me.

Well, it's just a speculation. I personally don't know. We do know what Yakomaru did to his own Queen, though, so...

Yakomaru seems to also like to expend his own troops on practically suicide missions just to accomplish objectives such as distractions to eliminate single targets. This is a War Crimes poster boy.

Also, the show itself seems to be willing to do anything, including toss characters away quite viciously and quickly. Yet unlike anime such as Another, it does so with great efficiency and precision in the storytelling. I'm quite impressed and wonder if we're going to have some UC Gundam Style conclusions near the end.

I didn't want to name any other series but since you did it for me...

Another was actually the series I was thinking of when thinking of non-effective over the top horror vs something, well like this.

Well, it was one that came off the top of my mind, but there are any number of movies across all media that don't value their characters lives and either kill them off in a fashion that makes you go "Oh" or even in worse cases "They deserved it". This happens with a lot of horror movies over here.

This often happens when you kill cardboard cutout concepts instead of people. Now granted, the victims in this show are from all across the spectrum of development but this actually makes the matter more disturbing, since everyone but Saki is fair game. And sometimes being the one left alive isn't any better.

Too often, writers seem to associate horror with just total gore. Really, the key to great horror is in setting a creepy and/or suspenseful mood, as well as a fatalistic sense of dread that "The Boogeyman" of the story is going to kill some people.

Some gore is fine, but it should be handled like sex is in a well-written romance narrative. A little bit of sex makes for good climatic moments in romance narratives, just like a little bit of gore makes for good climatic moments in a horror narrative. But too much sex turns romance into simple porn, and similarly too much gore turns horror into simple gorn.

I'm glad to know that the writer of the SSY novel, as well as the makers of this anime, seem to really get Horror.

Yes, that was a very good shot. I also really liked the sound effects (strange as it may be).

And I really liked the idea of Satoru hiking up his yukata. Saki really should've done the same...

Yes, that's what I really love about their relationship. They've been through so much together, they connect on such a deep level, and they have so much chemistry either as just best friends or as potential lovers. (Which is why I'm miffed that in the previous ep they toned down the physical contact between the two. It wasn't anything strictly romantic, but it showed how close they are to each other, and underscored how important they are to one another. :/ And in the meanwhile they keep adding extras on the Maria->Saki front... I'm totally into yuri, too, but come on. :/ )

Actually, I think all possible scenarios are very highly disturbing. Whatever I try to run across my mind it's just horror... and all the worse because both Maria and Mamoru were such sweet kids, it just breaks one's heart.

I know we're all thinking that the Fiend is Mamoru/Maria's child (and all of the implications that brings along), but I'm wondering: is it a resurrected Shun or Mamoru? [I know nothing of the book, so just speculation]

A few episodes back, with Maria's narration and the walking skeleton scene, I wonder if our fiend isn't a "new" child so much as a old one. Maria was attempting, after years of other work, to bring back her friends. Cantus users being a bit egotistical and all that. If Mamoru had died or just as a way to bring back what was lost. Shun was the experimenter. And, seeing the wrapped up humans, my head actually went to thinking about his egg experiments. (And, looking back at ep 10, they did use some spider imagery with Shun, as well)

Maybe a little bit of a wild theory, but the timing seems too tight for a MamoruXMaria child to grow up enough to become a fiend. If this was 5+ years later, then it'd seem more plausible. Or maybe I just don't want to think about the obvious possibilities. (Though a lobotomized PK user probably still has their PK abilities, which would mean they'd go rampaging and wouldn't be controllable. So, I don't think that's actually happened. Hopefully.)
