Ern to my knowledge at my school there's a junior orchestra and a senior orchestra. Meaning, the crap group and the good group. They obviously play traditional westen instruments. The only thing that we have that looks abit 'k-on like' is the drum set in the music room.
Oh I suck at music too. So being in any sort of music club is a big no no to me.

Many American schools have *classes* in music (band, orchestra, guitar, symphony, etc). Schools that *have* strong club activities often have a musical club or two (glee club, guitar, etc). Few American schools have a festival where clubs can "show their stuff" or run events like the Japanese school systems have.
However, I never encountered a club like K-on! that had brain-exploding cute girls who formed a band, had 'high tea', and were funny.

I have played a instrument (Clarinet) during high school, but my high school I used to attend didn't have a light music club that eat cake and tea all day... although they do have a Jazz Band though.

Most public schools here only have a band and they usually stick to a few pieces (i.e: the national anthem) for a couple of events every now and then.
When they gather, it's mostly to practice; Eating cake and drinking tea is obviously out of the question.

My old high school didn't really have a music club but there were multiple jazz bands that were separate from the regular band even though they had the same advisor. He was a pretty serious musician though and one of the groups placed highly in a national-level competition so I don't imagine their practice sessions were anything like K-ON!
The scholastic bowl club (competed against other schools in a trivia competition) that I was a member of actually was quite a bit like K-ON! though. Most of the "practices" just involved talking and one member actually did bring snacks on occasion. Was especially funny when compared to some of the other teams that were full of stuffy and completely serious people, with drill sergeant-like advisors. Even funnier that we ended up being the champions. |

My cousin is in both the Jazz Band and a does some stuff with a pop group at her highschool.
She said K-On nails the typical personalities of the drummer, the lead guitar, the keyboard/pianist, and the bass. (She plays the bass, and Mio is her favorite character) No tea time in America though. |

Here in Brazil it's not common schools or universities that have clubs like the Japanese ones. Here, if you like something, you need to find people that like the same thing and enjoy it with them without linking it with the school or the university.
