The squishy sound resembles a person squeezing grapes.

Bright red blood spurts out from their ears.

At the same time, they pull the pens that’re inserted deeply inside their ears out, and then proceed to raise their weapons.

Although their expressions are distorted due to pain, they’re smiling bitterly like they just destroyed their desires. There’s something white on the pens that are covered in blood. They are the eardrums.

Index strongly feels that she’s going to vomit any moment.

i'm always the kind of guy who enjoys the little details in an anime adaption. it's really too bad they decided not to show that since it would be a bit too graphic. seeing blood in any show is practically normal nowadays, but when you see nuns doing that... it's like

Sheol Fear falls under the same category as Spell Intercept as they are both use non-magic means to screw with their opponent's mind. Sheol (the Hebrew word for 'Hell' or 'Abyss') Fear points out the contradiction of the basis of the religion or theory of magic that has been cast and causes a break down in the enemies mind.

In this case, it basically points out the loopholes or conflicting concepts of Christianity's teachings

“That child has the knowledge of the entire world. With the knowledge of 103,000 magic books, she can make sharp criticism into ‘conflicts’ that Christianity has. This is the ‘Hell Fear’. To Christians, Christianity is like a function, and the paradox in the teachings are like holes in a cover, so the ‘Hell Fear’ is their enemy. Upon hearing this, their personalities will completely dissolve within a short time.”

Of course, this spell is useless against enemies other than Christians. As for magical authors like Aureolus, they have set up a special magical barrier to prevent their minds from being destroyed by their own original magic texts, so this spell is useless to them as well. However, there are very few people in the world who can ‘write an original magical text and not get their minds broken’ like Aureolus.

Stiyl also adds that effect of this ability is proportional to the 'purity' of the group being affected, meaning if the group's belief are the same, the greater the effect of Sheol Fear. Plus it's easier to brainwash people as a group than an individual.

My only real disapproval is that they made the Battle Nuns look too weak, I mean Named Characters aside, the Amakusa didn't seem to have that much trouble facing the 250 Nuns that had just kicked their asses an hour ago.

It could never realistically live up to my expectations that I have in my head, but the anime did make Touma look pretty badass crashing their party like that, hellbent on saving Orsula no matter what. It wouldn't have the same effect if it was anyone else if it was Kanzaki or Mikoto cause you would know they could handle them.

... But still, some visual and audio exaggeration to pump it up would have been nice.

That's a general problem with Index II for most parts. It doesn't seem to have the 'weight' in its storyboarding, which leads to less-than-could-be-awesome-felt scenes.

Sometimes it can't be helped within time-constraint and budget limitations ( ep3 was one example, they tried to cramp Uragami and Tatemiya into a few minutes at most ), but more times than not, it's really the fault of the how the director and storyboarder fail to bring the 'umph!' to the scene, be it through amazing voice-acting or superior key-timing or expressions.

... Honestly, I actually prefer it if they utilised more 'budget-cutting' measures in the episode rather than the more expensive, but mediocre looking battle animation scenes. Simple cuts like 'nun getting burned and screaming' or 'Touma being bombared by magical beams' would had looked better if they had focused on those scenes for some dramatic effect instead of what was done.

The way they so casually handled Stiyl burning the girls while still having trash talks with Tatemiya, or showing the 'Nuns flailing balls of light towards Touma" kinda ruined the impact those scenes could had held.

Probably through visual signals... or they're just so well coordinated that they can perforn as a group without orders, much like a 'silent' drill.

Though, the rest of the episode was fairly plain, and didn't touch me very much.
At least they removed the comical scenes.

Kyouka did it by accident, but Mapplehurry always will rate this show with a 1/10. The guy hates this show yet still keeps watching it.

I still feel that Touma's entrance lacked the 'kick' in the novels though, which is why I gave it a 6 instead of 7.
