Male characters: [...] 2nd place: Archer 3rd place: Emiya Shirou [...] 8th place: Lancer [...] Female characters: 1st place: Saber 2nd place: Tohsaka Rin [...] Anime Ranking: 1st place: Fate/stay night [...] Some people may have missed the fact that even Lancer made it into the TOP10. This is also one great thing about F/sn that many other shows massively fail at: It got a quite balanced male/female ratio. Some series have no notable male characters at all and even the main male characters are often just empty shells and more than an excuse to somehow have non-yuri breast groping, sometimes the male characters are even completely removed to have an all-girls show. Other series' only have 1 Gary Stu main male character that is the focus for all girls, while other male characters are only badly written villains or idiots that are just there to make the MC look good.

I wish I could find the rankings from 2006 to see how this compares. Got no luck through google. All I know is that F/SN was voted 9th best anime of all time back then, so Shirou being its main character, he must have been quite popular.

I am quite sure that that and F/Z are the reasons why Saber is so popular. It was supposed to be a boy meets girl story and that was the story of the fate-route from the VN, that even Nasu himself admitted to have made some blunders in it, but in the end the 2006 anime by DEEN became a boy meets girl story which was even worse. Luckily romance is just a minor sub-plot in UBW.

In UBW the romance does at least not negatively impact the characterisation (SEIBA! SEIBA! GIrLs DoNt FiGhT! SEIBA! SEIBA!) and the story (Screw you, Shirou, I attack Ryudo temple solo, despite you and your allied master warning me that it would be suicide). Better? Quote:

The franchise still is alive being a multimedia project. Look at Toaru series with Mikoto Misaka being stuck at 1st place at light novel rankings and Asuna at 2nd place several times. Of course my comparison might be wrong as Mikoto isn't plot relevant as she is occasional support character and Asuna is... the girlfriend furniture while Saber is central to the plot(on 2/3 routes). I won't answer to any reply regarding this off topic... better stop it here before the mode comes here. Here a comparison of heroines: |

@Miraluka:
I think you quoted the wrong post, because the one you quoted has no relation to the things you posted. Also for the games, I think for Sakura Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II would be much more fitting.
