Well the Georgians did take a gamble by assuming that the Russians wouldn't react to their offensive in south Ossetia due to the backing of the US and NATO.
As usual, the plan was the first casualty in the conflict.

where would those nato troops have been station?

i don't believed the russian troops ever cross the boundary between South Ossetia and Georgia. And I don't think Nato would risk antigonzing Russia by stationing troops in South Ossetia.

Germany and France seem to have a pretty good take on it from what I've experienced by encounters with the tea party sort. The rest of the examples raise some good points, but seem to fall under the same reactionary umbrella as the tea party itself.

Okay, I realize much of the coverage I read of the Tea Party is satire (as in "clips from the Daily Show"), but some of what I hear makes a more convincing argument for why Canada needs to spend billions on F-35s than any of the arguments the Conservative Party made defending their purchase. 8000+kilometers of undefended border just isn't as appealing as it once was.

Putin always strikes me as someone who engages in the same "macho world leader image" antics that Bush did, so it wouldn't surprise me if him and his followers tend to hype foreign threats as well. That said, it doesn't help that western countries initially said they weren't going to expand NATO eastward and then went ahead and did it anyway.

You have to bear in mind that he's a former KGB agent, so some of his methods may be through the use of force, and it's very likely that he still remembers the Cold War. It's mainly because of politicians with this kind of background that governments don't want to move on and cling to old habits.
