Did they still belive than NATO would invade them ?
Seems doubtful to me, too, but it does help maintain internal cohesion if you can point to an external threat.

I presume Russia is also concerned about its ability to bully its neighbors effectively should it choose to do so. What might have been the outcome in Georgia in 2008 if there were "substantial" number of NATO forces on the ground there?

Well the Georgians did take a gamble by assuming that the Russians wouldn't react to their offensive in south Ossetia due to the backing of the US and NATO.
As usual, the plan was the first casualty in the conflict.

where would those nato troops have been station?

i don't believed the russian troops ever cross the boundary between South Ossetia and Georgia. And I don't think Nato would risk antigonzing Russia by stationing troops in South Ossetia.

Germany and France seem to have a pretty good take on it from what I've experienced by encounters with the tea party sort. The rest of the examples raise some good points, but seem to fall under the same reactionary umbrella as the tea party itself.

They are looking the Tea Party throught the glasses of their own ideology.

Huh. Funny how there isn't one for England. Made me realise there hasn't actually been much interest over here in the Tea Party. We just don't give shit, lol.

An ambulance stops by the roadside to help a man suffering from a heart attack. After desperate measures, the patient survives. Brought into hospital, he then makes a protracted and partial recovery. Then, two years later, far from feeling grateful, he sues the paramedics and doctors. If it were not for their interference, he insists, he would be as good as new. As for the heart attack, it was a minor event. He would have been far better off if he had been left alone.

We don't precisely care here either. There have been a few blink-and-you'll-miss-it reports on the Tea party, but that's it. Our football results get way more coverage.

So.... There basically gonna use the "Child Pornography" strategy to block off a majority of file sharing sites? Or maybe just sites like Pirate Bay, and Limewire?

Edit: Oh P2P sites only?

It's funny because it's all true. Maybe this should be in silly news/stories.

Neonatal Fascism... yeah, it is good the world is watching.... even through colorful lense filters. I think the Spaniards come closest to nailing it (with their historical references) "We don't know if we feel more profound horror or more profound pity"

Okay, I realize much of the coverage I read of the Tea Party is satire (as in "clips from the Daily Show"), but some of what I hear makes a more convincing argument for why Canada needs to spend billions on F-35s than any of the arguments the Conservative Party made defending their purchase. 8000+kilometers of undefended border just isn't as appealing as it once was.

Putin always strikes me as someone who engages in the same "macho world leader image" antics that Bush did, so it wouldn't surprise me if him and his followers tend to hype foreign threats as well. That said, it doesn't help that western countries initially said they weren't going to expand NATO eastward and then went ahead and did it anyway.

You have to bear in mind that he's a former KGB agent, so some of his methods may be through the use of force, and it's very likely that he still remembers the Cold War. It's mainly because of politicians with this kind of background that governments don't want to move on and cling to old habits.
