Attack on Titan from this season has both Funi and CR simulcasting it. It could be that very rare exception though, but I can't quite say for sure since I don't really follow the simulcasting scene all that much due to it being not much of a concern to me (region blocks and download vs streaming issues and what not).

Wasn't there a post on this very same thread many many pages back that actually detailed how anime production cycles work? The turnaround time between concept and actually getting aired on the screen can be anywhere from two years to upwards of four or more (Gurren Lagann is one of the more famous examples of the latter). Even if meant tongue-in-cheek, there's no way the recent announcement was influenced by a petition.

So yeah, this was in the cards since at least 2011, it's just that KyoAni actually had something to tease people with released only now.

Also I don't think it's surely secured yet. I really hope it isn't. What are the chances of other companies like Funimation nabbing this one.
Chances are very small that Funimation would try for it. Sports anime doesn't sell in North America and Funimation basically swore off sports anime since Big Windup bombed hard. So odds are quite good that Free! will end up on Crunchyroll just as the odds of KuroBas 2 being on Crunchyroll are quite good.

We're not sure if this is going to be a sports anime. It might as well be a slice of life + swimming. The director says that the three major "themes" of Free! are water, friendship and upperbodies.

Whoever thinks Free! is a "for women" anime needs to consider what Slam Dunk was supposed to be.

Slam Dunk was originally meant to be something aimed at women? huh? From the very onset, I think Slam Dunk was suppose to be a Shonen sports series.

Oh Utsumi.... Nothing can stop you now...

Regarding slam dunk, I guess it's because the character dynamics were great? I remember cracking up in most of the humor at times. Not to mention the designs were pretty good for that time.

I ain't expecting it to go as in depth about swimming as Slam Dunk did with basketball. But if it does, then colour me surprised.

Movies in general don't tend to get as much hype around here as TV series for rather obvious reasons (namely the big delay between the Japanese airing and the BD/DVD release, and the fact that it's a single event rather than a weekly build), but I think many consider that movie to really be one of Kyoto Animation's crowning achievements.
Haruhi has its own momentum as a brand. I think it actually came out of the Haruhi 2009 fiasco with more of its brand intact than KyoAni did. The "KyoAni halo"was always more important for new franchises then existing ones.

When Lucky Star came out in 2007, I was really interested in it because Kyoto had just made Haruhi (and Kanon, but mainly Haruhi). I watched it with enthusiasm. And I know many others for whom this was also the case.

When Nichijou came out in 2011, I didn't really care because it wasn't a sequel and I found KyoAni less interesting than Shaft and PA Works. Tried watching it, couldn't get interested and dropped it.

For reasons I still haven't entirely figured out, my interest in them started to rise again after that. By the time Hyouka was set to air, I was back to "interested because it's KyoAni" (and looks cute). Went into it cautiously optimistic and ended up loving the first episode.

All I can say is there seems to be a strong correlation between the "0utf0xZer0 KyoAni enthusiasm level index" and "sales of non-sequel anime from Kyoto". And if there's one thing know from experience as a fan, it's that how much enthusiasm I go into a series with makes a big, big different. You could try and convince me collectors are just different in this regard, but I don't think I'd believe you.

I obviously can't speak for every anime collector, but I know for myself that I may check out shows because of the staff/studio involved, but that alone isn't enough to make me buy it. So even if a show has the "KyoAni brand", it really comes down to whether I enjoy the show and whether I want to own it. And, despite insinuation from some, many of the shows Kyoto Animation works are quite different in tone/style/approach, and they don't all appeal equally. You also have to consider what other shows are coming out each season competing for collectors' money.
I've never really doubted that the studio must deliver in order for enthusiasm to translate into sales. KyoAni's great sales are very much justified in that regard.

Which is why I seriously don't get why this is such a big deal.

Anyway, I'm glad KyoAni gets to do a fujoshi show (yeah, let's just call it what it is). The question is will fujoshi even like it? I don't care about the outcome, but I'm glad I'm finally getting my turn, as bad, underfunded animation was usually the issue why I never gave such shows a fair chance. Anyone remember Togainu no Chi?

The series is about competitive swimming not just boys going to their local pool.

How much it will focus on the competition side remains to be seen but I don't think it is wrong to label this a sports series.

I don't think that makes it any less fujoshi, but whatever, let's wait for the show to come out.

Well I am not saying that but fujoshi isn't a genre.

Anyways I think I read the director is a fujoshi fan (someone correct me if I am wrong)

I am not really sure if the primary purpose of this anime (after all its probably not going to go beyond friendship) was to appeal to fujoshi even though I am sure Kyoani anticipated that audience and they will probably be the main group that buys.

Descriptions for a show aren't restricted solely to genres. If you're trying to label them, sure. Describe, anything is fair game.

Anyway I foresee this show will be about 15% competitive swimming, 30% friendship, 60% Water and 100% UPPER BODIES. That's 205% of fabulous. Oh my.

I am not denying its more than one thing just saying it isn't wrong to say it is a sports series since it IS about competitive swimming. How much that aspect is focused on remains to be seen.

I think the reason why it's rubbed a couple of us the wrong way is because of the false premise that it was building said hype and attention on. There will be people watching this thinking they were one of the major reasons why it even got produced in the first place, when in actual fact it couldn't be any further away from the truth. This isn't like the Hellsing OVA's where actual foreign fan demand made it happen, people never had a say with Free! in the first place but were mislead to believe so. It's dishonest and I don't blame people for not supporting the practice.

I guess it's debatable whose bright idea was this (Japan's or CR's) but in the end it doesn't matter now, does it? The result is obvious: the show got a lot of attention. CR is an integral part of anime distribution now, they are a partner in this business. With this stunt they made a delusioned segment of the fanbase very happy, but the backlash against that only helped the anime's visibility, and that's all thanks to you guys!

What's done is done, so yea no point in crying over spilt milk. Although there will be a sour after taste. And it does matter to a certain extent as the community now has to deal with an extra issue of misinformation when it really shouldn't have. The size or relevance of said misinformation is still up in the air I guess, but hopefully it will be more negligible than anything.

Well that's definitely news to me lol
Guess I wasn't around back in the day to really know for sure, but I guess with guys like Rukawa, Fujma, Hanagata, Sendou and Maki it doesn't sound too farfetched that a Fujoshi crowd latched on.

EDIT: Well I'll be damned, it seems it was true lol http://www.punkednoodle.com/champloo...and-fujoshi-4/
