I'm ... not actually objecting to that at all. Lacking a third season closure on Spice & Wolf, I'll take whatever echoes there are here as comforting

Sadly, I have to agree with you. Their first order of business should be to make the audience care about the characters and the fate of that world, and they didn't even attempt to do that. The storytelling and execution of episode 2 were terribly uninspired and dull. There was a serious lack of witty dialogues in particular. It was plain boring. A shame after such a promising first episode. I hope they'll fix that with episode 3.

Sorry about that then. I'm not arguing you can't draw any parallels at all. Still...the attitudes might be similar, right, but not the voice acting per se. Horo's tone and overall manner of speaking isn't exactly like this, even during the explanation scenes, since that'd reek of laziness on part of the actress. I don't mind if you find the thought of any similarities to be comforting though, along the lines of what Vexx said.

Well, can't say I agree with either of you here. I think the tactic of going for a slow build-up episode after the introduction might not be fully appreciated by everyone, since that's what different tastes and expectations are all about, but in my book that's a perfectly acceptable creative choice, not a mistake, at this early point in the story. I'd only consider that a flaw if the rest of the series doesn't pick up the overarching plotline sooner or later. Preferably sooner, of course, but I'd rather they avoid rushing through everything to get to the "exciting" parts.

I don't know how the various manga adaptations treated this part of the narrative, but I would argue that while the larger plot did clearly take a back seat this time around, focusing on a much more local setting instead, there were enough nice, small scenes between the characters that I'd consider the anime episode interesting enough. Less dynamic than the previous, maybe, yet still not slow enough to make me feel bored.

The dialogue was less openly confrontational, yes, but I wouldn't say the exchanges weren't at least slightly witty on a smaller scale. I'm sure that there will be more engaging conversations in the future, but not every episode needs a high concentration of them. Likewise, the reduced amount of fanservice was actually pretty good from my point of view, but I'm also expecting them to increase it from time to time.

Of course, I'm guessing that -going by the preview- episode 3 will bring more excitement to the story, but I really don't have a serious complaint against episode 2. Although...the art quality did seem to drop a little in general, which is to be expected of most series after their first episode.

Well to be fair, so far the economics in Maoyuu are even simpler than Econ 101.

Well in the end for those girls this was the best result. While they had limited choices, they did make a choice here. Can serve good people as maids, could run off again and take their chances, or get turned in and sent back. Made a choice that lets them feel like people.

Just liked the little things in the episode. Not surprised that the Hero feels a bit useless right now. No longer a situation where he can fight his way to a solution. Can do some hunting, but that's about it. Where does a heroes skillset leave you in a world without war anyways?

As a fan of the story (the manga in particular), unfortunately I found this 2nd episode lacking.

What’s lacking is the overall execution of some scenes. The scene at the barn should be the one to describe how the two sisters are in a very poor condition. They’re cold, desperate, frustrated, extremely sad and afraid. Even more so when the Head Maid confront them with strict attitude. Yet they didn’t portray it with enough intensity. Furthermore, the scene where the Big Sis is asking to be made into human should’ve shown how determined she is to be a better person for her lil sister and herself, yet I didn’t get that determination vibe. That, and coupled with lackluster animation (the characters barely move in some scenes), plain characters’ expression and so-so score made this episode disappointing for me. In short, I agree with Clarste and Kanon.

At least there's one positive thing though. The three Noble Students looks a lot better compared to the manga.

I was joking, because whatever you call them, they're no longer serfs by the strict definition of serfdom. But that being said, as of episode 2 (I know nothing of the novel or manga), you could argue that it is a form of voluntary servitude.

I do like stories that are able to put both sides of a coin in a positive light.

The book the Demon Queen puts down in ep 2 had lots of random text related to what she was teaching, including two words with an X in them, so my alphabet chart has everything but Z now.

Is this same substitution cipher in the manga too, or was this developed for the anime?

Also, the text on the maps is all readable, with terms such as
Spoiler:

Are those familiar terms from the manga?

Spice & Demon 02 was okay. If episode 1 was just the setup/attempt to grab the audience to stay, episode 2 is to try to establish the setting a bit more.

Didn't really care about the whole slave bit. Took too much time, and in the end, it didn't really serve anything. Rather get into the jist of the farming stuff quicker.

This episode was definitely better than the last one, but I'm still not feeling the chemistry between them; it's like they still like each other just because they're two attractive people rather than any deep emotional connection.

Season 1 might probably won't get there but it does serve a purpose to the story...at a later date.

I don't think the cipher has come up in the manga, but then I'm only reading 1 of the 3 adaptions of the main story and the 4 koma gag strip (and the mage girl's side story if it ever gets translated)

3 or 4 of them have come up as importent places and I think the others are mentiond.

While it is a voluntary servitude (and this point is even made in some addaptions), a maid is not a serf because they can quit. Something a lot of fiction forgets is being a servent is not the same as being a slave and lording over the help is a very bad idea in real life.

Here is the problem: They are still serfs because their rightful lord never released them from their serfdom, nor did their current masters gain their release by some sort of adversarial contest with their rightful lord. Except now they're serfs that are serving a master who isn't obligated to give them the protection of law, military, and social security like their rightful lord.

What i would complain from this episode is the lacks of cold expression from Maid Chou (Head Maid). For the story, i would say that they should do more on explaining the base story why Maou wanna focus on the agriculture and the background of serfs...

And they omitted the joke of useless meat from episode 2...

Well they ran away but they aren't being reported

I think we can say serfs are not exactly slaves And servants are not the same thing as serfs.

The two girls became the servants of the Demon Queen. They are working and for that they are giving a place to stay, clothes, and food (and also in this case education). They are also not being turned in.

As serfs they would be forced to work on their lords land for the rest of their life. In this situation they are given freedom of their future.

Anyways there are different types of serfs and I expect the girls were basically the lowest level of serfs and almost like slaves.

It looks like the producer is trying some of his own magic on the story. I think I can give a better answer to your question if someone can answer mine.

What is the confirm number of episodes of this series.
