Easier and cheaper.

Makes sense when you think about it. They could only send a few Kaiju at a time. If the Kaiju could establish a beachhead then they would have a steady supply of Kaiju assaulting Earth.

On that matter it'd be pretty awkward.

Controller: 4 Kaijus have appeared, Codenames Crusher and Griffon heading towards the coast!
Marshal: Just 2? What about the other ones?
Controller: Codenames Big Daddy and flexor seem to be holding position...wait it seems that they are coming together and bringing their signatures together....sir temperatures are spiking! Toxicity is off the charts!

Gotta ask. I distinctly remember that the info that Mako's blue highlights were a result of Kaiju Blue exposure was mentioned in an official interview. However, I don't remember which article it first appeared in, and I'm having difficulty finding said article. If anyone can point to an actual original source for the info, it'd be much appreciated.

So apparently Del Toro has been okay'ed to write a script for Pacific Rim 2.

This is quite a bit different than there being a full on sequel in the works, but it IS hopeful. Pacific Rim might be underperforming, but it's only really doing so in the USA for rather obvious artificially manufactured marketing reasons. Internationally it's performing pretty good. So hopefully this will be accounted for when when it comes to green-light a sequel.

Something just occurred to me.

Remember how when Gypsy went through the rift, it emerged into some kinda internal space that looked organic? Almost like the inside of a body? Considering that the Kaiju makers use biotechnology, could this structure be the equivalent of their stargate? And lets further add to that. The implication seems to be, that the larger the object(s) moving through the rift, the larger the portal has to become temporarily. Presumably opening an multidimensional rift is hard work. Now lets think about the Kaiju attacks. Two things characterize them. Increasing in frequency on a predictable curve, and also increases in total mass being spewed out, also incrementally, going from Category I's, to eventually groups of category IV's.

Does this sound like a strength and stamina building exercise routine to anybody else? Like, how the only way the organic rift being could be strong enough to open a rift big enough to allow groups of Cat-V exterminators and colonists through would be through years and years of training the rift being up to it?

Bluefin Tamashii Nations Survey: I Couldn't Attend San Diego Comic Con

Here's a survey by Bluefin Tamashii Nations, which is a collective entity comprising of some of Japan's largest hobby makers including Bandai and Kotobukiya, and is also responsible for selling their wares overseas. The following survey seems to be asking on what kind of figures we'd like to see.... including an option at the very last page to vote for Pacific Rim. Already put in my vote

I just don't think kaijus by definition qualifiy as suicide bombers in a traditional sense. There's a fine line between expendable and suicidal.

Another topic: Does anyone (someone with knowledge about CGI production maybe) know why all the major fight scenes in the movie are in the dark, night or underwater? Is it cheaper to produce scenes in the darkness as you don't have to watch out for details that much due to a certain obscurity? - I kinda hope for a possible sequel to have a fight in broad daylight.
I think kaijus would be more akin to penal brigades of the USSR then suicide bombers.

I seem to recall del toro mentioning something about how he wanted the fights to occur in less then ideal weather and not during a bright shining day because it would be more realistic

Roughly:

Rinko Kikuchi: We won't be meeting for a while, but let's have fun when the day of our fight comes!

Knifehead-kun: I absolutely won't lose, rim! Bring it on, rim!

Rinko Kikuchi: Gipsy Danger's coming along, Ja!
