Meanwhile, in a place sorely lacking in "empty space":

Well, a vast part of Russian is the freezing Siberia, which is too harsh to support large populations. As for Singapore, why can't it solve its potential population problem by immigration? With the economist advantage it has over its neighbors, I believe Singapore can pick the top of the cream from almost everybody.

That's a weird and somewhat sensationalist title that AP chose for the article. They've pretty much narrowed it down to environmental causes, and seem to indicate that frequent dehydration while out performing manual field labor is the cause. The title evokes thoughts of some new virus or bacteria...

Pretty stupid thing for Iran (or its proxy) to do. How does that possibly help them anyway?

They seem to have their own weird logic.
You would think that if they were really working on nuclear weapons, they would try to buy time until those are ready.
But instead we see really crazy stuff each week. A lot of this is our media reading too much into their inner politics, but stilll...
So either they are really thinking in mysterious ways, or all this nuclear weapon hype is false.

If it's from Iran, it's more likely to be intended as a menace or at least a warning.

its an attempted "payback" for the death of Hezbollah's chief of operations Imad Mornia that got killed 4 years ago yesterday.
they've been accusing Israel for killing him and trying to get payback for his death for years.
they got (slightly) luckier this year i guess.

good night.

Venezuela's Capriles seeks to unseat Chavez
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...81C1BT20120213
Quote:
Venezuela's opposition primary winner Henrique Capriles on Monday exuded confidence that he can unseat President Hugo Chavez and end 13 years of socialism that foes say has left the OPEC nation in crisis.

Capriles' campaign got off to a roaring start with an easy victory in the Democratic Unity coalition's vote on Sunday, where high turnout of nearly 3 million showed the opposition can mobilize supporters ahead of the October 7 presidential election.

The 39-year-old center-left state governor maintained his conciliatory bid for unity in a divided Venezuela, but was more combative in criticizing Chavez's state-driven economic model.

"The nationalizations are a complete failure, they made expropriations into a political instrument," said Capriles on Monday during his first news conference after the primary vote.

Another sizable quake in the Pacific Northwest, this one about 5.7.

And there was another one off Oregon just last week, as you can see here.

We are of course nearing the anniversary of the Tohoku quake, which was near the anniversary of the Chilean quake. Does anyone else have a bad feeling about this?

Was there a cluster of about three or four in the same location on the same day within the last week or so. Cause that would seem like the Tohoku quake.

Oh that reminds me... Has the fact gov. Ishihara (yes the lovely governer you all love /sarcasm /puke) trying to form a new political party come to discussion?
It's basically a Japanese ultra nationalist Neo-con, with aim to abolish globalization.

Sigh.
And you thought tea-party was bad.

Russia is not againts peacekeepers. At least that's what I read in http://www.gazeta.ru/politics/2012/0..._4000041.shtml today.

However Moscow demands full compliance with UN Charter. Which is impossible without Syria's approval, lol

I did note the story when it was published here earlier this month. I had intended to bring it up, but then forgot about it. I've posted the article in full on the Japanese Culture thread, which I feel is a more conducive place to discuss the topic further.

@Tom Bombadil: I have noted your question about immigration matters. Sorry, I'll get around to answering the query soon. Feel free to drop me a note in VM if I forget.

Then why does he wear a suit in almost all his appearances, which is a symbol of the reach of Western powers?

Emerging markets a safe haven with better returns

Alright, those of you who have did this, hands up - and that includes buying from the nice female agent showing her cleavage at the investment bank.

Here is a simple thing to note : emerging markets get their money not from domestic consumption, but from foreign consumption - they sell their stuff overseas, to those people with a bigger currency, to earn money.

And if they sell their stuff overseas, and the people there reduced their spending when shit hits the fan, who's going to buy their exports?

I would look and think twice before I buy into an emerging market. If it is necessities, I'll check for substitute goods. And I wouldn't park so much of my money there - it is plain silly to do so.

I noticed that also Ledgem.
Oh well, maybe they wanted to try and attract more attention to the story?

Anyway, here is a story that IS of concern.

Heh, I've thought that before.... why do the ultra-nationalists and the yakuza wear symbols of Western taint and corruption (suits, dark sunglasses, etc).

But yeah, I suppose we could see that coming from Ishihara and his ilk.
