It just hit chapter nine, officially ranking started, and it placed itself as the 4th (3rd in practicality since first is reserved for color treatment). Which is incredibly well.

Yakitate was cool, but it took a weird turn and went abstract towards the end or halfway point. The ending referene was cool though

Hmm... as much as I am enjoying this manga overall, I'm hoping Tosh will vary the formula a bit like how he did in Ch 7, because the whole "Souma being underestimated then doing the impossible+overtop reactions" nearly every chapter is starting to get a little old. =/

Also I kinda surprised that despite nearly being 10 chapters in, this only still just Souma's first day on campus.

about the elit ten does the ranking go to 1 to 10 or 10 to 1 because the guy is 7th and the girl 10th and it was mentioned she is the best of the school

It's not specifically mentioned, but I assume the members are all more or less equal and the numbers are assign based on the order when that individual joined the council. Otherwise Souma should be fighting the "last rank" first like in most Shounens. But it's just a guess at this point.

It's a "seat" though. Seats are usually ranked, when numbers are assigned to it.

Hell, what does "Shokugeki" mean? I thought it means "cooking that makes you strip"!

It doesn't mean anything, it's a made up word.
Shoku is eating, and Geki is the chinese spear.

The kanji for "Shokugeki" is similar to kanji for "Shokutaku", a dinner table, so that's probably where it spawned from. Double pun that with "shougeki", a shock, which probably explains the reactions.

We don't know what it means in the story yet, although I would gather it's some form of gourmet contest of culinary students.
