BETA 1 (middle): Hey dude, you're still on the computer? It's getting late. What are you doing? BETA 2 (left): Power-leveling. The guy with me is probably looking for porn as always. BETA 3 (right): The heck? I'm farming too, you know. There's a spawn rate increase in the main server. BETA 2: Liar. Your boner is showing. BETA 1: >_> Ecchi.

Random Curiosity spoke highly of Muv Luv and got my anticipation up for this series but so far it feels like a standard mecha anime. Three episode rule still applies, and it looks the story is gonna pick up next week.

Oh man, I know more people were wowed by the Takemikazuchi, but I screamed like a little mecha-fangirl when that Shiranui appeared. The Type-94 is my favorite Muv-Luv TSF and probably one of my favorite mech designs ever.

To judge as a pure mecha show, the action isn't very convincing. The so called TSFs are not being used in a manner that necessitate their position as the primary weapon against BETAs. They are mostly gun platforms at close range with redundant armour and not used in anyway that makes them more effective than eg tanks.
Once I get over these issues, and just consider this as a story about a big struggle against an alien horde, not a bad show so far. |

My favorite part of this episode was not much the deaths, the NOMNOMNOM, or the mech. It is Yui breaking down crying when she see that this small miracle of a baby. This baby is like showing her what she is fighting, and might die, for; this helping to affirm her resolve that, "NO! Humans WILL NOT go down without a fight."

Dunno, it's kind of unfair that this airs on the same day as Jinrui... it's very hard to take it seriously, after that nihilistic feast |

No point for spoiler tags... the episode has already aired in the american webspace
... and I agree the opening was pretty bad, but the singer is quite hot IRL I guess if hipsters watch some tits, discard everything as the crappy porn they watched in their childhood... anyway, since I was somewhat negative about this anime... I like it, it has way too many good elements, a large budget, a lot of source material, and 2 cours to work the story pace with comfort. But censoring and extra the extra material were very bad choices IMHO. To my understanding the franchise is not for kids anyway |

But at the same time, Muv Luv Eclipse has the misfortune of going up against Rinne no Laagan (another mecha), Sword Art Online (The Block Buster anime of this season). Humanity is Declining (this season's replacement of Tsuritaima), etc, all on the same day. So this season isn't as weak as some might have argued initially. We have a Tsuritaima in Humanity is Declining. Rendezvous nicely replaces Apollon. Bimbi is this season's Nyaruko-san. Tari Tari fills up the same role Natsuro Kiseki had last season. Etc, etc. So, there is curd this season, as in every season, but there are also animes ranging from adequately good (Tari Tari) to excellent (Rendezvous and Humanity is declining), and unfortunately, Eclipse so far leans closer to the Tari Tari end of the spectrum of watchability, and suffers from poorer production values than the CGI Porn-fest that was SAO's first episode. And certainly, there has been quite a good deal of unnecessary fanservice, and rather disappointing production values for Total Eclipse. And yet, censoring? It's almost as if they are banking on the girls, not on the grimness of the setting to sell Muv Luv, even if Muv Luv is all about throwing boys and girls who could have crawled out from mangas like Danshi Nichijou or K-on, Slice of Life show like Kokoro Connect, or Natsuro Kiseki, and Harem Protagonist and Haremettes from the Harem shows airing this season, into a world rivalling Warhammer 40K in grimdarkness. In another world, the first episode girls would not have been out of place as the cast of a Slice of Life or Rom-com show, and I think that was the whole point of the first episode. Feeding Slice of Life fodder into the BETA om-nom nom nom machine slaughter fest of the Second. basically tells you all you need to know about Muv Luv. It's hell on earth for characters who would not be out of place in another genre, set on a gentler earth. It's the feeding of the personifications of moe and harem tropes into mouths of the BETAs - the Tall Dark Bishojou Ojou begged for her death, the Meganekko who lost her boyfriend went Sayaka Crazy etc, etc . And the first two episodes basically declares this premise with a not too subtle trumpet. |

I thought the anti-laser smoke will help, but no. It's wasn't nearly useful as the heave-metal clouds. As for the imperial navy, the admirals that showed up seemed familiar. Last edited by Silvance; 2012-07-08 at 21:50. |

This is the message of Muv-Luv, even someone who never heard anything about it could probably gather as much. Indeed, should Muv Luv get it's own forum, and fanfiction threads, I anticipate the trend would be similar to ZnT crossovers. In ZnT crossovers, you replace the generic harem wimp with another character. In Muv Luv fanfiction crossovers, I'd imagine you'd see Harem wimps and Slice of Life girls being fed to the BETAs!

Nerf laser class plox. Too OP, oneshotting my vikings TSFs. Wonder if Takemizakuchi will get blown up as easily as the other mechs by these bastards...
Which reminds me, what the heck did they do to counter laser class when they're already flying planes 3 years later? Hope they'll explain it next episode.
