Anime similar to the Wire
I rewatched the Wire and what I like is how it makes the gangsters, drug dealers and other criminals smpathetic. It had strong characterization and it wasn't cop show where the good guys win and the bad guys lose. It wasn't even grey for that but rather it was rainbow colored with no good guys or bad guys at all. Is there any anime with strong characterization? HBO level quality? It doesn't need to have gan bangers or anything but I am looking for somethign with no clear 'heroes' or 'villains'.

As good as The Wire? Well, you won't find many series as good as one of the best American dramas. But, you might like Baccano which blurs the lines of morality quite well. And Monster has a superb dramatic story. You also might like One Outs, Gankutsuou, Black Lagoon, and Kaiji.
